  • Perspectives on adaptive dynamical systems
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Chaos. - 1054-1500 .- 1089-7682. ; 33:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Adaptivity is a dynamical feature that is omnipresent in nature, socio-economics, and technology. For example, adaptive couplings appear in various real-world systems, such as the power grid, social, and neural networks, and they form the backbone of closed-loop control strategies and machine learning algorithms. In this article, we provide an interdisciplinary perspective on adaptive systems. We reflect on the notion and terminology of adaptivity in different disciplines and discuss which role adaptivity plays for various fields. We highlight common open challenges and give perspectives on future research directions, looking to inspire interdisciplinary approaches.

  • Amino-functionalised silica-grafted molecularly imprinted polymers for chloramphenicol adsorption
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering. - : Elsevier BV. - 2213-3437. ; 8:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This research investigated the liquid-phase removal of chloramphenicol (CAP), an emerging contaminant using molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). CAP adsorption profiles, equilibrium, and kinetics were analysed. The adsorption performance was compared between MIPs and non-imprinted polymers (NIPs), both with silica or without silica grafting. The imprinting factor (IF) values for the Si@MIPs-CAP were significantly higher than the IF values for MIPs-CAP adsorbent at pH 8. The kinetics of CAP adsorption was fitted to pseudo-second-order kinetics models for MIPs-CAP (R2 = 0.9998) and Si@MIPs-CAP (R2 = 0.9999). The adsorption isotherm of Si@MIPs-CAP was well represented by the Langmuir model (R2 = 0.9991), while the Freundlich isotherm model (R2 = 0.9998) provided the best fit for MIPs-CAP. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacities, Qmax, for Si@MIPs-CAP (32.26 mg g−1) were higher than the Qmax for Si@NIPs-CAP (29.6 mg g−1). These results suggested that the silica-grafted molecularly imprinted polymers can be employed as a potential water-compatible adsorbent for the selective adsorption and removal of CAP from aqueous phase.

  • Why Iranian adolescents do not brush their teeth : a qualitative study
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Dental Hygiene. - : Wiley. - 1601-5029 .- 1601-5037. ; 10:2, s. 86-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: To explore and describe attitudes towards tooth-brushing among Iranian adolescents. Methods: A series of focus-group sessions were held with 37 Iranian adolescents in schools. The groups comprised five to eight adolescents. All focus-group discussions were tape-recorded and then transcribed verbatim. All transcripts, codes and categories were read several times to extract a theme. Data were analysed using a qualitative content analysis approach. Results: Four major categories emerged from the analysis: brushing teeth is a necessary evil, parental influence on not brushing teeth, brushing teeth is insignificant, and brushing teeth is a health hazard. The theme identified in the latent content described that tooth-brushing is not part of the adolescents’ activities of daily living. Conclusions: Health educators should stress on the engagement of parents, awareness of the adolescents on brushing techniques and causes of toothache, and address any misconceptions regarding tooth-brushing.

  • Controlled release of growth factors using synthetic glycosaminoglycans in a modular macroporous scaffold for tissue regeneration
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Communications Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2399-3642. ; 5:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Healthy regeneration of tissue relies on a well-orchestrated release of growth factors. Herein, we show the use of synthetic glycosaminoglycans for controlled binding and release of growth factors to induce a desired cellular response. First, we screened glycosaminoglycans with growth factors of interest to determine kon (association rate constant), koff (dissociation rate constant), and Kd (equilibrium rate constant). As proof-of-concept, we functionalized an elastin-like recombinamer (ELR) hydrogel with a synthetic glycosaminoglycan and immobilized fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2), demonstrating that human umbilical vein endothelial cells cultured on top of ELR hydrogel differentiated into tube-like structures. Taking this concept further, we developed a tunable macroporous ELR cryogel material, containing a synthetic glycosaminoglycan and FGF2 that showed increased blood vessel formation and reduced immune response compared to control when implanted in a subcutaneous mouse model. These results demonstrated the possibility for specific release of desired growth factors in/from a modular 3D scaffold in vitro and in vivo.
