  • A search for murarregamma at the level of 10-13
  • 1991
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 25th International Conference on High Energy Physics. - 9810024347 ; , s. 1070-1071
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The MEGA experiment, which is a search for the decay murarregamma with a branching ratio sensitivity of about 10-13, employs highly modular, fast detectors, state-of-the-art electronics, and a staged trigger with on-line filters. The detectors are contained in a 1.5-T solenoidal field produced by a superconducting magnet. Positrons are confined to the central region and are measured by a set of thin MWPCs. Photons are measured by one of four layers of pair spectrometers in the outer region. Most aspects of the design have been validated in engineering runs; data taking will begin in 1990 with much of the electron arm and one pair spectrometer layer installed.

  • Environmental drivers of increased ecosystem respiration in a warming tundra
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Nature. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 629:8010, s. 105-113
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Arctic and alpine tundra ecosystems are large reservoirs of organic carbon. Climate warming may stimulate ecosystem respiration and release carbon into the atmosphere. The magnitude and persistency of this stimulation and the environmental mechanisms that drive its variation remain uncertain. This hampers the accuracy of global land carbon–climate feedback projections. Here we synthesize 136 datasets from 56 open-top chamber in situ warming experiments located at 28 arctic and alpine tundra sites which have been running for less than 1 year up to 25 years. We show that a mean rise of 1.4 °C [confidence interval (CI) 0.9–2.0 °C] in air and 0.4 °C [CI 0.2–0.7 °C] in soil temperature results in an increase in growing season ecosystem respiration by 30% [CI 22–38%] (n = 136). Our findings indicate that the stimulation of ecosystem respiration was due to increases in both plant-related and microbial respiration (n = 9) and continued for at least 25 years (n = 136). The magnitude of the warming effects on respiration was driven by variation in warming-induced changes in local soil conditions, that is, changes in total nitrogen concentration and pH and by context-dependent spatial variation in these conditions, in particular total nitrogen concentration and the carbon:nitrogen ratio. Tundra sites with stronger nitrogen limitations and sites in which warming had stimulated plant and microbial nutrient turnover seemed particularly sensitive in their respiration response to warming. The results highlight the importance of local soil conditions and warming-induced changes therein for future climatic impacts on respiration.

  • Amplifying the VUV radiation of atomic nitrogen in helium, argon, krypton, and xenon
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of optical technology (Print). - 1070-9762 .- 1091-0786. ; 79:8, s. 462-469
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses the spectral features of the amplification of narrow-band radiation of atomic nitrogen in the excimeric media of inert gases, including helium, argon, krypton, and xenon. Appreciable short-wavelength shifts (up to 0.026 nm) are detected in the spectra of the amplified radiation relative to the atomic emission lines of nitrogen that initiate this radiation. The observed shifts exceeded the instrumental resolution of the spectrometer that we used, were determined by the composition of the amplifying medium, and were independent of its excitation parameters under the experimental conditions. An explanation of the observed effect is proposed.

  • Electronic spectra of XeNe molecules in the range 77100-90100 cm(-1) near Xe* (6p, 5d, 6p', 7s, 7p, 6d) obtained by the (3+1) REMPI and (2+1) REMPI methods
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Optics and Spectroscopy. - 0030-400X .- 1562-6911. ; 108:6, s. 899-914
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electronic spectra of XeNe molecules in the range of 77100-90100 cm(-1) are measured by the method of laser resonance multiphoton ionization in a supersonic jet. The photoionization spectra are obtained upon two- and three-photon excitations of molecules and their ionization by the next photon. In the range of 80300-90100 cm(-1) near Xe*(5d, 6p', 6d, 7s, and 7p), the spectra are obtained for the first time. A whole number of vibrational systems are measured in this range. The majority of vibrational systems near Xe* (5d, 6d, 7p, and 7s) are located in the red range with respect to their dissociation limits. In the blue range with respect to the dissociation limits, continua corresponding to transitions of molecules from the ground state to repulsive potential curves of excited states are detected. For a number of excited states of XeNe molecules, the vibrational analysis is performed and molecular constants are estimated.

  • Walking distance is a predictor of exacerbations in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Respiratory Medicine. - : Elsevier BV. - 0954-6111 .- 1532-3064. ; 101:5, s. 1037-1040
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are responsible for a high utilisation of the health care resources, and the cost is expected to increase. Physiological measures of lung function often fail to describe the impact the symptoms have on exacerbations, days of hospitalisation, and on a patient's health. Methods: Twenty-one patients (14 female) with COPD (65 years, 40-79 years) admitted to the Department of Respiratory Medicine in Uppsala, performed a pulmonary function test (FEV1% predicted=37) and health status measurement (St. Georges Respiratory Questionnaire, SGRQ) at discharge. Four to six weeks after discharge, when they were in a stable clinical condition, they performed an exercise test (Incremental Shuttle Walk Test, ISWT) to measure their exercise capacity. Results: Nine of 21 patients (43%) were rehospitalised within 12 month. The mean distance walked in the ISWT was 174 m in patients who were hospitalised and 358 m in non-hospitalised patients (P<0.001). Oxygen saturation ≤88% after the ISWT was found in 73% of hospitalised patients in contrast to only 22% in non-hospitalised patients (P<0.05). Activity related health status (SGRQ-activity) was higher (worse) in hospitalised patients than in non-hospitalised patients (75 vs. 50) (P<0.05). The association between walking distance and the risk of rehospitalisation was significant after adjusting for oxygen saturation and health status (hazard risk ratio 0.8 (0.67-0.97) per 10 m). This study has shown that walking distance is a good and reliable predictor of rehospitalisations in moderately and severely disabled patients with COPD.

  • Corona-pandemins påverkan på lågstadieelevers läsinlärning
  • 2021

  • Experimentally measured thermal masses of adsorption heat exchangers
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Energies. - : MDPI AG. - 1996-1073. ; 13:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The thermal masses of components influence the performance of many adsorption heat pump systems. However, typically when experimental adsorption systems are reported, data on thermal mass are missing or incomplete. This work provides original measurements of the thermal masses for experimental sorption heat exchanger hardware. Much of this hardware was previously reported in the literature, but without detailed thermal mass data. The data reported in this work are the first values reported in the literature to thoroughly account for all thermal masses, including heat transfer fluid. The impact of thermal mass on system performance is also discussed, with detailed calculation left for future work. The degree to which heat transfer fluid contributes to overall effective thermal mass is also discussed, with detailed calculation left for future work. This work provides a framework for future reporting of experimental thermal masses. The utilization of this framework will enrich the data available for model validation and provide a more thorough accounting of adsorption heat pumps. © 2020 by the authors.

  • No learning loss in Sweden during the pandemic : Evidence from primary school reading assessments
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Educational Research. - : Elsevier. - 0883-0355 .- 1873-538X. ; 114
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The COVID-19 pandemic has led to worldwide school closures, with a risk of learning loss. Sweden kept primary schools open, but it is unknown whether student and teacher absence and pandemic-related stress factors affected teaching and student progress negatively. In this study, reading assessment data from 97,073 Swedish primary school students (grades 1-3) were analysed to investigate potential learning loss. Results showed that word decoding and reading comprehension scores were not lower during the pandemic compared to before the pandemic, that students from low socio-economic backgrounds were not especially affected, and that the proportion of students with weak decoding skills did not increase during the pandemic. Study limitations are discussed. We conclude that open schools benefitted Swedish primary school students.

  • Powerful decomposition of complex traits in a diploid model
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Explaining trait differences between individuals is a core and challenging aim of life sciences. Here, we introduce a powerful framework for complete decomposition of trait variation into its underlying genetic causes in diploid model organisms. We sequence and systematically pair the recombinant gametes of two intercrossed natural genomes into an array of diploid hybrids with fully assembled and phased genomes, termed Phased Outbred Lines (POLs). We demonstrate the capacity of this approach by partitioning fitness traits of 6,642 Saccharomyces cerevisiae POLs across many environments, achieving near complete trait heritability and precisely estimating additive (73%), dominance (10%), second (7%) and third (1.7%) order epistasis components. We map quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and find nonadditive QTLs to outnumber (3:1) additive loci, dominant contributions to heterosis to outnumber overdominant, and extensive pleiotropy. The POL framework offers the most complete decomposition of diploid traits to date and can be adapted to most model organisms.
