  • Application of paper mill sludge and additional chemical substances in the production of container cardboard
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Eastern-European Journal of Enterprise Technologies. - : PC Technology Center. - 1729-3774 .- 1729-4061. ; 5:6 (119), s. 22-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The possibility to dispose of paper mill sludge as part of a composition of container cardboard from secondary raw materials has been investigated. The fractional composition of the sludge was studied and it was shown that the main part of the fibers is represented by small particles with a size of up to 1.2 mm. Studying the processes of formation of container cardboard when using paper mill sludge showed that an increase in the consumption of fibrous-inorganic waste leads to a deterioration in the physical and mechanical properties of cardboard. However, the increase in sludge consumption does not affect the surface absorption of water during one-sided wetting. The value of these indicators is within the normal range and is 25 and 70 g/m2, respectively. In addition, an increase in sludge consumption from 10 to 50 % in the manufacture of cardboard leads to a decrease in the degree of fiber retention on the grid from 86.3 to 82.1 %. Regularities of using strengthening additives, namely industrial cationic and anionic flocculants, as well as native corn and modified starches for the strength of cardboard and the quality of sub-grid waters, have been established. Research results show that the effect of flocculants is quite ambiguous. On the one hand, there is a clearly observed positive impact on the quality of the sub-grid waters. This is due to the reduction of their turbidity due to smaller fiber washes. Nevertheless, the positive effect on physical and mechanical parameters is minimal, and in some cases, there is a decrease in strength indicators. The greater the efficiency of keeping fine fiber on the grid when using flocculants, the lower the values of physical and mechanical indicators. In general, when using sludge in the composition of cardboard in combination with flocculants and starch, the indicators were achieved that are considered standard for waste paper container cardboard of grade KT-1 according to TU U 17.1-41085075-002:2017

  • Effect of oxidative treatment on composition and properties of sorbents prepared from sugarcane residues
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Industrial crops and products (Print). - : ELSEVIER. - 0926-6690 .- 1872-633X. ; 139
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Efficient sorbents for the removal of cationic dye were prepared from sugarcane bagasse (stalk) and straw (leaves) by oxidative pre-treatment with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in acetic acid. The effects of variables, such as concentration of H2O2, temperature and time on the properties of the fiber sorbents obtained were studied according to a 2(3) full-factorial design. For comparison, an oxidative treatment of sugarcane biomass with glacial acetic acid was also used. The yields of the materials obtained and their chemical composition were characterized and compared. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy and benzene vapor adsorption were used to investigate the structural properties and morphology of the initial materials and sorbents. The sorption of methylene blue dye was used to assess the efficiency of dye removal by the sorbents. The pre-treatment conditions significantly affected the sorbent yield, their chemical composition (contents of cellulose, lignin and ash) as well as their sorption properties. The cellulosic sorbent (C-sorbent) from sugarcane bagasse obtained by pre-treatment with H2O2 in acetic acid and the lignocellulosic sorbent (LC-sorbent) from sugarcane straw obtained by pre-treatment with glacial acetic acid, had the highest sorption capacity for the methylene blue dye. For both types of sorbents, the sorption capacity increased with chemical pretreatment as a result of an increase in pore volume.

  • The Technical and Economic Feasibility for the Production of Cellulose from Non-Wood – Agricultural Residues
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Ecological Engineering & Environmental Technology. - : Polish Society of Ecological Engineering (PTIE). - 2719-7050. ; 23:6, s. 99-103
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper is presented results of the technical and economical evaluation of the production of cellulose for the solving the problem of utilization of agricultural residues of lignocellulosic nature. Non-wood was used in this work for pulping. Treatment was proposed to carry out with the application of peracetic acid. Such method allows to obtain cellulose, lignin, furfural and xylose. Spent peracetic solution can be used to precipitate lignin and for regeneration of acetic acid and to recover furfural and xylose. A technological scheme for the processing of plant raw materials by this method has been developed. Economic efficiency was calculated. The sale of by-products can provide additional financial benefit. Such an approach in the processing of significant volumes of agricultural waste is effective from an economic point of view, as well as from an environmental point of view, as it allows to reduce the negative impact on the environment and to ensure its protection.

  • Walnut shells as a potential low-cost lignocellulosic sorbent for dyes and metal ions
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Cellulose. - : Springer. - 0969-0239 .- 1572-882X. ; 25:8, s. 4729-4742
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Currently, it is necessary to develop new methods and materials for solving the problem of environmental pollution by various toxicants. For these purposes, vegetal materials can be used. In this study, efficient low-cost sorbents based on walnut shells, an agro-industrial by-product, were prepared by treatment with acetic acid or a mixture of acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide. It was shown that the treatments significantly affected the composition and structure of walnut shells and their sorption properties with respect to organic dyes (methylene blue, methyl violet, and murexide) and heavy metal ions. Methylene blue dye was used for additional studies on the effect of pH, contact time and kinetics of sorption. The maximum adsorption rate of the dye occurred within the first 30 min of contact, during which the concentration of methylene blue in the solution was reduced by more than half. Full sorption equilibrium was reached within 180-230 min for studied samples. The adsorption kinetics of methylene blue was found to best be described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model. It was shown that dyes adsorption processes were well described by Freundlich model, which takes into consideration the heterogeneity of the surface of the adsorbent. The obtained plant sorbents are characterized by a high sorption capacity for heavy metal ions (18-29 mg/g for Fe3+ and 33-44 mg/g for Cu-2). Due to their numerous advantages, such as the high sorption capacity, high availability and low cost of raw materials, simplicity of disposal and nontoxicity, the obtained natural sorbents may have a wide practical use in industrial wastewater treatment.
