  • Palaeolimnological and sedimentary responses to Holocene forest retreat in the Scandes Mountains, west-central Sweden
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Holocene. - : SAGE Publications. - 0959-6836 .- 1477-0911. ; 14:6, s. 862-876
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A suite of analyses was performed on sediments accumulated during the last 10 700 years in Lake Spaime, a small, hydrologically open water body in the modern alpine tundra zone of the Scandes Mountains, west-central Sweden. The study aimed to evaluate (1) the nature of climate changes that forced the late-Holocene lowering of altitudinal tree limit in the region, the timing of which is known from prior studies based on radiocarbon dating of subfossil wood, and (2) the impact of these vegetational changes on an aquatic ecosystem. Arboreal pollen and plant macrofossil data confirm the persistence of trees in the lake catchment at least from c. 9700 cal. BP until c. 3700 cal. BP. Although growing-season temperature is commonly believed to be the dominant factor driving boreal forest tree-limit variations in the region, a chironomid-based reconstruction of mean July air temperature suggests that local deforestation during the late Holocene was not accompanied by a significant cooling. The tree-limit retreat was more likely caused by increasing effective moisture and declining length of the growing season. The ecohydrological response of Lake Spaime to this combination of climate and vegetational changes included a decline in primary productivity, as indicated by an abrupt decrease in sediment organic matter content, while associated increases in organic delta(13)C, delta(15)N and C/N point to diminished fluxes and altered balance of catchment-derived nutrients following deforestation. The decline in aquatic productivity is also marked by a distinct change in the mineral magnetic properties, from a high magnetic concentration assemblage dominated by fine-grained magnetite of biogenic origin to one dominated by background levels of coarse-grained detrital magnetite.

  • Climate and environment during the Younger Dryas (GS-1) as reflected by composite stable isotope records of lacustrine carbonates at Torreberga, southern Sweden
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Journal of Quaternary Science. - 1099-1417. ; 14:1, s. 17-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Climatic and environmental changes during the Younger Dryas stadial (GS-1) and preceding and following transitions are inferred from stable carbon and oxygen isotope records obtained from the sediments of ancient Lake Torreberga, southern Sweden. Event GS-1 is represented in the sediment sequence by 3.5 m of clay containing lacustrine carbonates of various origins. Comparison of isotopic records obtained on mollusc shells, ostracod valves, and Chara encrustations precipitated during specific seasons of the year supports estimates of relative changes in both lake water and mean annual air temperatures. Variations in soil erosion rates can also be estimated from a simple isotope-mass-balance model to separate allochthonous and autochthonous carbonate contributions to the bulk carbonate content of the sediments. The well-known, rapid climatic shifts characterising the Last Termination in the North Atlantic region are clearly reflected in the isotopic data, as well as longer-term changes within GS-1. Following maximum cooling shortly after the Allerod-Younger Dryas (GI-1-GS-1) transition, a progressive warming and a slight increase in aquatic productivity is indicated. At the Younger Dryas-Preboreal (GS-1-PB) transition mean annual air temperature rapidly increased by more than 5 degrees C and summer lake-water temperature increased by ca. 12 degrees C. The subsequent Preboreal oscillation is characterised by an increase in soil erosion and a slight decrease in mean annual air temperature. These results are in harmony with recent findings about large-scale climate dynamics during the Last Termination. Copyright (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

  • 1.55 μm buried heterostructure laser via regrowth of semi-insulating InP:Fe around vertical mesas fabricated by reactive ion etching using methane and hydrogen
  • 1991
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 59:3, s. 235-255
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A GaInAsP/InP Fabry-Perot-type buried-heterostructure quantum well laser operating at 1.55 μm has been realized utilizing iron-doped semi-insulating InP around vertical mesas fabricated by reactive ion etching using methane and hydrogen. A maximum cw output power of 19 mW has been achieved on as-cleaved chips of 300 μm length with a quantum efficiency of 21% per facet. Threshold currents lie between 20 and 25 mA. As low as 2 Ω series resistance has been measured despite an ohmic contact area not exceeding that of the 2-μm-wide mesa. A 3 dB bandwidth of 7.5 GHz at 12 mW output power is obtained from the small-signal frequency modulation measurements.

  • Kinematic and kinetic gait analysis in the sagittal plane of trans-femoral amputees before and after special gait re-education.
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Prosthetics and Orthotics International. - 1746-1553. ; 26:2, s. 101-112
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A special gait-training programme, combining a psychological therapeutic approach with methods in physiotherapy and body awareness, was used to re-educate nine unilateral trans-femoral amputees. All were rehabilitated trauma or tumour amputees with an age of 16-60 years. They had worn prostheses for more than 18 months. The re-education aimed at integrating the prosthesis in normal movements and increasing body awareness. Gait was measured before and after treatment and at 6 months follow-up with a three-dimensional motion analysis system. Results showed almost normalised gait speed and increased symmetry in the hip joints with increased muscle work on the amputated side both immediately and at follow-up. At follow-up there were significant differences in almost all parameters between the two legs of the subjects and when compared to a reference group of 18 healthy volunteers of similar age. Thus, the intact leg compensates for loss of function in the amputated leg and thereby works differently compared to the reference group. For example, during shock absorption the extension moment in the intact knee increased from 0.6 Nm/kg before to 1.0 Nm/kg after treatment and at follow-up compared to 0.4 Nm/kg in the reference group. The eccentric power of quadriceps increased from 0.6 w/kg before to 1.8 w/kg after treatment and 1.7 w/kg at follow-up compared to 0.4 w/kg in the reference group. The limp of amputees is usually observed in the frontal plane, but the authors' special focus on the sagittal plane here illustrates gait propulsion influences. The positive training results remained after six months.

  • Pelvic motion in trans-femoral amputees in the frontal and transverse plane before and after special gait re-education.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Prosthetics and Orthotics International. - 1746-1553. ; 27:3, s. 227-237
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using a special gait re-education programme, combining methods in physiotherapy with a psychological therapeutic approach to integrate the prosthesis with normal movements and to increase body awareness, the authors studied unilateral trans-femoral amputees aged 16-60 years with trauma or tumour as causes. In their service area they found 16 such current prosthetic users with at least 2 years of prosthetic experience and 9 who could complete the programme. Gait was measured before and after treatment and at 6 months follow-up with a three-dimensional motion analysis system and was compared to a reference group of 18 healthy volunteers of similar age. Results showed normalised gait speed and increased symmetry in step length after treatment, but reduced symmetry in pelvic motion. The reference group had a pelvic rotation of + 4 degrees both in the frontal and transverse planes. In the frontal plane, pelvic obliquity increased after treatment to a similar amplitude to the reference group, but with a different timing. Pelvic internal rotation on the amputated side increased to about 8 degrees in the beginning of stance. The amputated and the intact side before treatment were more symmetrical than afterwards and also when compared with the reference group. In spite of this, gait appeared to be more symmetrical, probably due to more efficient pelvic motion and more symmetrical upper-body movements. This was probably an effect of increased work with the intact side to compensate for the lack of power on the amputated side. These results remained at follow-up.

    • DN DEBATT 15/3.

  • Holocene forest dynamics and climate changes in the Abisko area, northern Sweden : the Sonesson model of vegetation history reconsidered and confirmed
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Ecological Bulletins. - 0346-6868. ; 1996:1, s. 15-30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new palaeoecological and palaeoclimatic project in the subalpine Abisko area, N Scandes, founded upon the pollen zone system defined by Sonesson is described. This model of vegetation history has been confirmed, although the chronology is partly revised. Sonesson's pollen diagrams are combined with new results from a lake sediment sequence at the tree-limit, which include sedimentologic, mineral magnetic, oxygen isotope and plant macrofossil studies. Since the deglaciation at c9000-8500 14C yr BP the vegetation of the Abisko area has generally been dominated by a subalpine birch Betula woodland tundra. The cliamte has generally been subarctic-oceanic since the deglaciation except for the period c.5500-3500 BP when temperate-continental conditions prevailed. This climatic development differs from the situation in the central Scandes.
