    • The ECOSYS model is the ingestion dose model integrated in the ARGOS and RODOS decision support systems for nuclear emergency management. The parameters used in this model have however not been updated in recent years, where the level of knowledge on various environmental processes has increased considerably. A Nordic work group has carried out a series of evaluations of the general validity of current ECOSYS default parameters. This paper specifically discusses the parameter revisions required with respect to the modelling of deposition and natural weathering of contaminants on agricultural crops, to enable the trustworthy prognostic modelling that is essential to ensure justification and optimisation of countermeasure strategies. New modelling approaches are outlined, since it was found that current ECOSYS approaches for deposition and natural weathering could lead to large prognostic errors.

    • In this article, the authors explore how the extrinsic cues Corporate Social Responsibility, Endorsement, and Country of Origin affect consumer evaluations of product quality, value, and expected product popularity for frozen Pangasius filets, a farmed fish product just recently introduced into the Norwegian market. The effects of these three variables are tested on purchase intentions. By means of a 2x2x2 factorial experiment in combination with survey data, the authors find that the three extrinsic cues under study had different effects on the evaluative variables. Furthermore, these variables all had positive and significant effects on purchase intentions. Hence, the general conclusion is that importers of new food products like Pangasius can benefit from focusing on extrinsic cues when the intrinsic cues are hard to evaluate or are unknown. Through the indirect effect on purchase intentions, extrinsic cues play an important role when consumers judge unfamiliar and new products.

  • The moderating effects of need for cognition on drivers of customer loyalty

    • Purpose - While satisfaction, value, image, and credibility are commonly assumed to drive customer loyalty, there is nevertheless reason to question whether their effects vary across groups of consumers. This paper seeks to explore how individuals with contrasting Need-for-Cognition (NFC) levels differ in using memory-based information when forming behavioral intentions towards a current service providerDesign/methodology/approach - We tested the hypotheses by means of survey data from customers of retail banks, and applied two-group analysis using structural equation modeling (SEM) to test the moderating effects of NFC.Findings - Satisfaction positively affects loyalty for high NFCs, but not for low NFCs. Image is insignificant in both groups. Value positively affects loyalty for low NFCs, but not for high NFCs. Credibility has a positive effect for low NFCs, but not for high NFCs.Research limitations/implications - The limited sample size affects the power of the test methodology, but Chow-tests of regression models gave similar results. Further research should test the model in other contexts to enhance external validity.Originality/value - Previous research has primarily focused on how consumer demographics moderate satisfaction-loyalty links. We include additional drivers of loyalty, and assess moderation by a personality trait (NFC) not previously used in satisfaction-loyalty research. To develop more effective customer strategies, both researchers and practitioners need to understand how different types of consumers attend to and utilize information when forming behavioral intentions. The standard practice of surveying customer satisfaction and loyalty typically requires the consumer to make a memory-based judgment. Our results indicate that consumers’ dispositional tendency to think and elaborate (more or less) can bias survey results.

    • The naturally occurring peptide indolicidin from bovine neutrophils exhibits strong biological activity against a broad spectrum of microorganisms. This is believed to arise from selective interactions with the negatively charged cytoplasmic lipid membrane found in bacteria. We have investigated the peptide interaction with supported lipid model membranes using a combination of complementary surface sensitive techniques: neutron reflectometry (NR), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D). The data are compared with small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) results obtained with lipid vesicle/peptide solutions. The peptide membrane interaction is shown to be significantly concentration dependent. At low concentrations, the peptide inserts at the outer leaflet in the interface between the headgroup and tail core. Insertion of the peptide results in a slight decrease in the lipid packing order of the bilayer, although not sufficient to cause membrane thinning. By increasing the indolicidin concentration well above the physiologically relevant conditions, a deeper penetration of the peptide into the bilayer and subsequent lipid removal take place, resulting in a slight membrane thinning. The results suggest that indolicidin induces lipid removal and that mixed indolicidin-lipid patches form on top of the supported lipid bilayers. Based on the work presented using model membranes, indolicidin seems to act through the interfacial activity model rather than through the formation of stable pores.
