  • A synthesis of animal movement across scales
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Animal Movement Across Scales. - : Oxford University Press. - 9780199677184 ; , s. 259-267
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter aims at synthesizing the knowledge presented in the chapters of the book’s three sections by addressing evolutionary compromises, dispersal, gene flow, and assisted movements. How climate change and other environmental changes at different scales may affect animal movement, migration, and dispersal in the future are also summarized here. Moreover, how the different senses are utilized for navigation and orientation and how these may lead to different movement and migration patterns are also discussed. Finally, how the recent technical revolution has affected animal movement research is addressed and the view on future perspectives of animal movement research is also provided.

  • An in vivo study of the effect of 5-HT and sympathetic nerves on transferrin and transthyretin mRNA expression in rat choroid plexus and meninges
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Brain Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 1872-6240 .- 0006-8993. ; 662:1-2, s. 148-154
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Brain expression of transferrin (Tf) and transthyretin (TTR) mRNA has been demonstrated in different species, TTR being found only in the choroid plexus. We report here that both these mRNAs are also expressed in the meninges. In vitro studies have shown that Tf secretion by the rat choroid plexus is stimulated by 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) while sympathetic nerves regulate different transport functions in the same tissue. We have used various in vivo models to study the neuroendocrine regulation of Tf and TTR mRNA expression in the choroid plexus and meninges. Destruction of the serotonergic nerves in the brain by either raphe nuclei lesion or intraventricular injections of 5,7-dihydroxytryptamine (5,7-DHT), which both decreased brain 5-HT levels significantly, did not affect Tf or TTR mRNA levels in choroid plexus and meninges, but increased TTR mRNA in liver. Intraventricular injection of 10 or 100 pmol 5-HT did not change the expression of these proteins in any of the tissues studied. Removal of the sympathetic innervation to the choroid plexus by cervical sympathectomy did not affect Tf or TTR mRNA levels in choroid plexus and liver, nor the incorporation of radioactive leucine into protein in various parts of the brain. In conclusion, our results do not support a regulatory role in vivo for neuronally derived 5-HT or sympathetic nerve activity on Tf and TTR mRNA expression in rat choroid plexus and meninges.

  • UVB-induced inflammation gives increased d-dopachrome tautomerase activity in blister fluid which correlates with macrophage migration inhibitory factor.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Experimental Dermatology. - : Wiley. - 0906-6705. ; 12:3, s. 278-282
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • UVB light was used to induce an experimental inflammation in normal human skin in order to investigate its correlation with the activity of the newly described enzyme d-dopachrome tautomerase (DDT) in the fluid of experimental blisters. Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) activity was determined as a closely related marker of inflammation. DDT and MIF activities were demonstrated in blister fluids in all 10 healthy subjects. All but one of these subjects showed increased activity of DDT and MIF after three minimal erythemal doses (MED) of UVB. The mean activity of DDT increased approximately twofold and the mean activity of MIF also increased twofold after UVB in our experimental model. We found a strong correlation between DDT and MIF activities. The presence of DDT in epidermis and its increase at UV irradiation was confirmed by immunohistochemical studies. In this study, DDT is for the first time demonstrated in the skin. It is also the first time DDT can be related to inflammation, and its covariation with MIF strengthens this observation.

  • Microsatellite markers in a complex of Horismenus sp. (Hymenoptera : Eulophidae), parasitoids of bruchid beetles
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Molecular Ecology Notes. - : Wiley. - 1471-8278 .- 1471-8286. ; 4:4, s. 707-709
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Parasitoids of the genus Horismenus (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) are the main natural enemies of bruchid beetles that feed on several species of Phaseolus beans. Samples of Horismenus depressus, H. missouriensis and H. butcheri were collected from seeds of three Phaseolus species throughout Mexico to examine the impact of plant variability on the genetic structure of parasitoid populations. For this purpose, six microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized. These loci are of great interest in understanding the taxonomy of the genus Horismenus, the most important Eulophid genus in the Neotropics.

  • The potential of native parasitoids for the control of Mexican bean beetles: A genetic and ecological approach
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Biological Control. - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-2112 .- 1049-9644. ; 47:3, s. 289-297
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bruchid beetles in the genus Zabrotes are important pests of field and stored beans all around the world and cause enormous economical losses in Mexico and Central America. Native parasitoids have been successfully used to suppress infestations by bruchid beetles in Africa, but few studies have assessed their potential to reduce seed damage in the New World and no successful biological control programs have been implemented, mainly due to the poor knowledge on their biology, systematics and ecology in this region. In this study, we used molecular tools to describe a new complex of three parasitoid species of bruchid beetles in the genus Horismenus, and investigated the level of gene flow and presence of ecotypes in this complex. We also examined the specific association between species of Horismenus and two sibling species of Zabrotes beetles, in order to evaluate their potential as biological control agents. Microsatellite data support the previous morphological description of three species, H. butcheri, H. missouriensis and H. depressus, but suggest some gene flow between H. missouriensis and H. depressus. Host-plant is shown to be the most important factor determining the ecological distribution of the two Zabrotes species, whereas altitude explains most of the distribution of the three Horismenus species. These results complement our understanding of this tritrophic system, providing a solid base for a potential biological control program using native parasitoids. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. • "Vi klimatforskare stödjer Greta och skolungdomarna"
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Dagens nyheter (DN debatt). - 1101-2447.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • DN DEBATT 15/3.
