  • Monitoring Evolution of Code Complexity in Agile/Lean Software Development - A Case Study at Two Companies
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 13th Symposium on Programming Languages and Software Tools, SPLST 2013 - Proceedings. - 9789633062289 ; , s. 1-15
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the distinguishing characteristics of Agile and Lean software development is that software products “grow” with new functionality with relatively small increments. Continuous customer demands of new features and the companies’ abilities to deliver on those demands are the two driving forces behind this kind of software evolution. Despite the numerous benefits there are a number of risks associated with this kind of growth. One of the main risks is the fact that the complexity of the software product grows slowly, but over time reaches scales which makes the product hard to maintain or evolve. The goal of this paper is to present a measurement system for monitoring the growth of complexity and drawing attention when it becomes problematic. The measurement system was developed during a case study at Ericsson and Volvo Group Truck Technology. During the case study we explored the evolution of size, complexity, revisions and number of designers of two large software products from the telecom and automotive domains. The results show that two measures needed to be monitored to keep the complexity development under control - McCabe’s complexity and number of revisions.

  • Measuring the Impact of Changes to the Complexity and Coupling Properties of Automotive Software Systems
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Systems and Software. - : Elsevier BV. - 0164-1212. ; 86:5, s. 1275-1293
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background In the past few decades exponential increase in the amount of software used in cars has been recorded together with enhanced requirements for functional safety of their embedded software. As the evolution of software systems in cars often entails changes to software architecture, it is important to be able to monitor their impact. Method We conducted a case study on a distributed software system in cars at Volvo Car Corporation with the goal to develop, apply and evaluate measures of complexity and coupling which could support software architects in monitoring changes. Results The results showed that two metrics - structural complexity and coupling measures – can guide architectural work and turn attention of architects to most complex subsystems. The results were confirmed by monitoring a complete electrical system of a vehicle under two releases. Conclusion By applying the metrics after each significant change in the architecture, it is possible to verify that certain quality attributes have not deteriorated and to identify new testing areas. Using these metrics increases the product quality with respect to stability, reliability, and maintainability and also has potential to reduce long-term software development/maintenance costs.

  • Defect Prediction over Software Life Cycle in Automotive Domain - State of the Art and Road Map for Future
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: ICSOFT-EA 2014 - Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Software Engineering and Applications. - : SCITEPRESS - Science and and Technology Publications. ; , s. 377-382
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Software today provides an important and vital role in providing the functionality and user experience in automotive domain. With ever increasing size and complexity of software together with high demands on quality and dependability, managing software development process effectively is an important challenge. Methods of software defect predictions provide useful information for optimal resource allocation and release planning; they also help track and model software and system reliability. In this paper we present an overview of defect prediction methods and their applicability in different software lifecycle phases in the automotive domain. Based on the overview and current trends we identify that close monitoring of inservice performance of software based systems will provide useful feedback to software development teams and allow them to develop more robust and user friendly systems.

  • Early Verification and Validation According to ISO 26262 by Combining Fault Injection and Mutation Testing
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Communications in Computer and Information Science. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 1865-0937 .- 1865-0929. ; 457, s. 164-179, s. 164-179
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today software is core part of modern automobiles. The amount, complexity and importance of software components within Electrical/Electronics (E/E) systems of modern cars is only increasing with time. Several automotive functions carrying software provide or interact with safety critical systems such as systems steering and braking and thus assuring functional safety for such systems is of high importance. Requirements for the safety assurance are specified partially by such functional safety standards as ISO 26262. The standard provides the framework and guidelines for the development of hardware and software for components deemed to be safety critical. In this chapter we argue that traditional approaches for safety assurance such as fault injection and mutation testing can be adapted and applied to functional models to enable early verification and validation according to the requirements of ISO 26262. We show how to use fault injection in combination with mutation based testing to identify defects early in the development process - both theoretically and on a case of self-driving miniature vehicles. The argument is grounded upon the current best practices within the industry, a study of ISO 26262 standard, and academic and industrial case studies using fault injection and mutation based testing applied to the functional model level. In this paper we also provide the initial validation of this approach using software of a self-driving miniature vehicle.
