    • The use of systems analysis involving tools like Causal loop diagrams and stock and flow diagrams can be shown in practical tests to greatly enhance systems insight and understanding of the dynamic behaviour of complex systems. Whereas many students may have difficulty understanding what a coupled system of differential equations really do, systems analysis creates such insights even to those with differentiofobia. Within the systems analysis course given at LUMES, we have extensive experience in teaching systems analysis and the use of CLD and SFDs to people of different backgrounds, and also seen how technical problems in engineering have a great help in using CLD and SFDs to explain and communicate insight into complex systems to non-technical people

    • Ecological footprint (EF) analysis was used to determine whether so-called eco-living in Sweden differs from conventional living. The study involved two elements: (1) calculations of material and energy needs for constructing an eco-house in Toarp and a standard house in Oxie, southern Sweden; and (2) EF analysis of consumption patterns in households from Toarp and Oxie. A difference of only 10% was observed in the comparison of the building materials between the two houses. Building materials represent less than 5% of the annual EF in Toarp and Oxie. There was no significant difference in the EF between the two towns. The average annual EFs are 2.8 ha per person and 3.7 ha per person in Toarp and Oxie, respectively. Food consumption and energy consumption for housing (space heating and electricity use) are the largest contributors to the EF in Toarp and Oxie. These factors are almost equal in size and constitute 75% of the total EF in both Toarp and Oxie.

  • Planning the future forests: managing for wildlife in a climate constrained landscape

    • Multipurpose functionality is a paradigm when it comes to forest management. This includes sustainability, resilience, stand stability, wildlife management, recreation, clean water and air, or healthy soils - to name a few. The world is aiming at a maximum global warming of 2-deg by 2100, but cumulative emissions are still rising. Higher temperatures are associated with higher risks of extreme events such as storm, flood, droughts, pests and fires etc. - and at the same time, forest systems are key for any mitigation activity to avoid such dangerous climate change. But how will a managed forest look like in the future? How can we understand the underlying dynamics and make our forests fit for the increased need for carbon storage, biomass for energy and sustainable wood and non-wood forest products like game, while maintaining biodiversity, recreational and protected areas. Moreover, we need to address all challenges on limited land and establish action from policy development allthe way to their implementation within a short time frame. Based on Sweden's forests, traditionally considered a role model for successfully bridging a multitude of demands, we present a modeling approach that should serve as a planning tool for enhancing forests' risk resilience and capacity of integrating diverse demands and different ecosystem-services. Guided by the expertise of Sweden's Environmental Protection Agency, national forest and habitat shift models from SLU and KTH will be linked with global land use models and engineering tools from IIASA. Hereby, special emphasis will be put on ecosystem services from wildlife, different scenarios of forest intensification and the optimization of biomass for bioenergy production. First estimates show that spatially explicit modeling can substantially support decision making by optimizing multipurpose use of both managed and protected areas and steering habitat shift for maintaining biodiversity and improving wildlife (game)management.

  • Impact assessment of global megatrends : Two case studies connecting global megatrends to regional topics

    • This report gives an overview how global megatrends can influence topics on regional and local level. The report demonstrates how qualitative modelling and system thinking approach can be applied to analyse the possible impact of global megatrends to the regional topic of resource scarcity, demonstrated in two case studies. In the first case study, a generic qualitative model is developed to explain a general pattern of resource scarcity on a EU regional scale. Typical entry points of political measures are shown as well as how the eleven global megatrends – described by the European Environment Agency – can be connected to such a model. Potentially, some of the global megatrends will increase the problem of resource scarcity while others will put relieve on the challenge. A third group of megatrends has apparently now impact on the resource scarcity pattern. In the same way, the possible impact of the policy measure can be compared.In the second case study, a qualitative model is built to explain the impact of the global megatrends upon the Swedish environmental goals. The case study illustrates how the different scales: local, EU regional and the global scale connect through the megatrends, and how they impact the possibility of fulfilling the Swedish environmental goals. In conclusion, we are able to demonstrate that the global megatrends put in nearly all cases more burden to environmental challenges respectively the environmental goals. The potential impact of global megatrends differs in time and spatial scale. Generally, the methodology of qualitative modelling has proven to be a powerful approach to assess the potential impact of global megatrends to regional or concrete topics as well as to assess the potential impact of policy measures in terms of goal reaching.

  • Systems Dynamic Modeling within Sustainability Constraints

    • In this study we are asking ourselves whether ■Systems Dynamic Modelling■ can be combined with ■Backcasting from Sustainability Principles■ to support strategic planning towards sustainability. From the perspective of a ■Backcasting Practitioner■, ■Systems Dynamic Modelling■ is a set of tools that help gaining insight into the detailed functioning of a given system, but lacks the ability to support strategic planning towards sustainability ■ unless complemented with a satisfactory goal definition. ■Backcasting from Sustainability Principles■, in the eyes of a ■Systems Modeller■, is the planning step of a learning loop that also includes action implementation and follow-up. Since no dynamic modelling takes place this methodology typically produces laundry lists of isolated problems and solutions, thereby missing potentially important feedback loops, delays, hidden problems and suitable intervention points in the system.
