    • In the past decades, considerable attention has been directed toward anaerobic digestion (AD), which is an effective biological process for converting diverse organic wastes into biogas, volatile fatty acids (VFAs), biohydrogen, etc. The microbial bioprocessing takes part during AD is of substantial significance, and one of the crucial approaches for the deep and adequate understanding and manipulating it toward different products is process microbiology. Due to highly complexity of AD microbiome, it is critically important to study the involved microorganisms in AD. In recent years, in addition to traditional methods, novel molecular techniques and meta-omics approaches have been developed which provide accurate details about microbial communities involved AD. Better understanding of process microbiomes could guide us in identifying and controlling various factors in both improving the AD process and diverting metabolic pathway toward production of selective bio-products. This review covers various platforms of AD process that results in different final products from microbiological point of view. The review also highlights distinctive interactions occurring among microbial communities. Furthermore, assessment of these communities existing in the anaerobic digesters is discussed to provide more insights into their structure, dynamics, and metabolic pathways. Moreover, the important factors affecting microbial communities in each platform of AD are highlighted. Finally, the review provides some recent applications of AD for the production of novel bio-products and deals with challenges and future perspectives of AD. © 2022 The Author(s).     • Lignocellulosic materials are valuable resources in today's bioprocess technologies; however, their recalcitrance is a major barrier in industry regarding their conversion to microbial products. For this purpose, in this study, the synthesis of ionic liquids (ILs), its function in the hydrolysis of lignocellulosic materials, its biochemistry and possible toxic effects were investigated. In addition, the bioconversion of lignocellulosic materials pretreated with ionic liquids to biofuels (bioethanol, biobutanol, biogas and hydrogen) and various biochemicals is discussed in detail. For this, the focus is on the potential of ILs for industrial integration and use in large-scale reactors. ILs offer significant advantages due to their potential for ease of use and their features such as recovery and reuse after pretreatment. However, there are economic and technical problems that need to be solved to expand ILs in industrial systems and increase their use potential. To overcome these problems and the usability of ILs technologies in industry, techno-economic analyses has been examined and compared with traditional processes.

    • This paper considers the optimal design of input signals for the purpose of discriminating among a finite number of affine models with uncontrolled inputs and noise. Each affine model represents a different system operating mode, corresponding to unobserved intents of other drivers or robots, or to fault types or attack strategies, etc. The input design problem aims to find optimal separating/discriminating (controlled) inputs such that the output trajectories of all the affine models are guaranteed to be distinguishable from each other, despite uncertainty in the initial condition and uncontrolled inputs as well as the presence of process and measurement noise. We propose a novel formulation to solve this problem, with an emphasis on guarantees for model discrimination and optimality, in contrast to a previously proposed conservative formulation using robust optimization. This new formulation can be recast as a bilevel optimization problem and further reformulated as a mixed-integer linear program (MILP). Moreover, our fairly general problem setting allows the incorporation of objectives and/or responsibilities among rational agents. For instance, each driver has to obey traffic rules, while simultaneously optimizing for safety, comfort and energy efficiency. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach for identifying the intention of other vehicles in several driving scenarios.

  • Active Model Discrimination with Applications to Fraud Detection in Smart Buildings

    • In this paper, we consider the problem of active model discrimination amongst a finite number of affine models with uncontrolled and noise inputs, each representing a different system operating mode that corresponds to a fault type or an attack strategy, or to an unobserved intent of another robot, etc. The active model discrimination problem aims to find optimal separating inputs that guarantee that the outputs of all the affine models cannot be identical over a finite horizon. This will enable a system operator to detect and uniquely identify potential faults or attacks, despite the presence of process and measurement noise. Since the resulting model discrimination problem is a nonlinear non-convex mixed-integer program, we propose to solve this in a computationally tractable manner, albeit only approximately, by proposing a sequence of restrictions that guarantee that the obtained input is separating. Finally, we apply our approach to attack detection in the area of cyber-physical systems security.

  • Efficacy of polyextremophilic Aeribacillus pallidus on bioprocessing of beet vinasse derived from ethanol industries

    • This work aimed to evaluate the applicability of Aeribacillus pallidus for the aerobic treatment of the concentrated beet vinasse with high chemical oxygen demand (COD 685 g.L−1) that is defined as an environmental pollutant. This bacterium is a polyextremophilic strain and grow aerobically up to 7.5% vinasse at high temperature (50 °C). In the bioreactor and under controlled conditions, A. pallidus reduced the soluble COD content of 5% vinasse up to 27% during 48 h and utilized glucose and glycerol, completely. Furthermore, a reduction of manganese, copper, aluminum, and nickel concentrations was observed in the treated vinasse with A. pallidus. The obtained results make this strain as an appropriate alternative to be used for the aerobic bioprocessing of the vinasse. © 2020 The Author(s)

    • This review provides an update on the state-of-the art technologies for the valorization of solid waste and its mechanism to generate various bio-products. The organic content of these wastes can be easily utilized by the microbes and produce value-added compounds. Microbial fermentation techniques can be utilized for developing waste biorefinery processes. The utilization of lignocellulosic and plastics wastes for the generation of carbon sources for microbial utilization after pre-processing steps will make the process a multi-product biorefinery. The C1 and C2 gases generated from different industries could also be utilized by various microbes, and this will help to control global warming. The review seeks to expand expertise about the potential application through several perspectives, factors influencing remediation, issues, and prospects.
