    • Reliable and scalable wireless transmissions for Internet-of-Vehicles (IoV) are technically challenging. Each vehicle, from driver-assisted to automated one, will generate a flood of information, up to thousands of times of that by a person. Vehicle density may change drastically over time and location. Emergency messages and real-time cooperative control messages have stringent delay constraints while infotainment applications may tolerate a certain degree of latency. On a congested road, thousands of vehicles need to exchange information badly, only to find that service is limited due to the scarcity of wireless spectrum. Considering the service requirements of heterogeneous IoV applications, service guarantee relies on an in-depth understanding of network performance and innovations in wireless resource management leveraging the mobility of vehicles, which are addressed in this article. For single-hop transmissions, we study and compare the performance of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) beacon broadcasting using random access-based (IEEE 802.11p) and resource allocation-based (cellular vehicle-to-everything) protocols, and the enhancement strategies using distributed congestion control. For messages propagated in IoV using multihop V2V relay transmissions, the fundamental network connectivity property of 1-D and 2-D roads is given. To have a message delivered farther away in a sparse, disconnected V2V network, vehicles can carry and forward the message, with the help of infrastructure if possible. The optimal locations to deploy different types of roadside infrastructures, including storage-only devices and roadside units with Internet connections, are analyzed. © 2019 IEEE

  • A Synchronous Baseband Receiver for High-Data-Rate Millimeter-Wave Communication Systems

    • A novel synchronous baseband receiver is presented in this letter. With a pilot tone insertion at the transmitter, the proposed baseband receiver can perform carrier recovery (CR) regardless of modulation scheme and/or baud rate. The synchronous baseband receiver has an analog-digital hybrid structure, where a low-cost digital signal processor controls an analog local oscillator (LO) in frequency and phase to achieve CR. This structure requires only one low-cost analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with a sampling rate of 100 MS/s. A proof-of-concept demonstration at E-band achieves 9-Gb/s 64-quadratic-amplitude modulation (QAM) and 16-Gb/s QPSK transmissions.

  • Micrometer Accuracy Phase Modulated Radar for Distance Measurement and Monitoring

    • An enhanced accuracy random binary phase modulated radar is proposed. It can be used in high accuracy monitoring in manufacturing. Compared with the traditional high accuracy radar using frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW), the proposed radar system can be used in a multi-user scenario without occupying more bandwidth. A two-step distance estimation method is introduced to estimate the distance. First, the distance estimation accuracy is narrowed down to a half carrier wavelength by analyzing the envelope of the phase modulated signal. Then the carrier phase information increases the distance accuracy to several micrometers. An equalization method is introduced to solve the I/Q imbalance problem. The proposed radar system is demonstrated at a carrier frequency of 80 GHz with a bandwidth of 2 GHz. The measured distance error was within ±7 μm. In addition, a high measurement repetition rate of 500 kHz was reached which is suitable for real-time monitoring in automatic manufacturing.

    • Loss- or gain-of-function mutations in ATP-sensitive potassium channel (K-ATP)-encoding genes, KCNJ8 and ABCC9, cause human central nervous system disorders with unknown pathogenesis. Here, using mice, zebrafish, and cell culture models, we investigated cellular and molecular causes of brain dysfunctions derived from altered K-ATP channel function. We show that genetic/chemical inhibition or activation of KCNJ8/ABCC9-containing K-ATP channel function leads to brain-selective suppression or promotion of arterial/arteriolar vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) differentiation, respectively. We further show that brain VSMCs develop from KCNJ8/ABCC9-containing K-ATP channel-expressing mural cell progenitor and that K-ATP channel cell autonomously regulates VSMC differentiation through modulation of intracellular Ca2+ oscillation via voltage-dependent calcium channels. Consistent with defective VSMC development, Kcnj8 knockout mice showed deficiency in vasoconstrictive capacity and neuronal-evoked vasodilation leading to local hyperemia. Our results demonstrate a role for KCNJ8/ABCC9-containing K-ATP channels in the differentiation of brain VSMC, which in turn is necessary for fine-tuning of cerebral blood flow.

  • Structured caustic vector vortex optical field : manipulating optical angular momentum flux and polarization rotation

    • A caustic vector vortex optical field is experimentally generated and demonstrated by a caustic-based approach. The desired caustic with arbitrary acceleration trajectories, as well as the structured states of polarization (SoP) and vortex orders located in different positions in the field cross-section, is generated by imposing the corresponding spatial phase function in a vector vortex optical field. Our study reveals that different spin and orbital angular momentum flux distributions (including opposite directions) in different positions in the cross-section of a caustic vector vortex optical field can be dynamically managed during propagation by intentionally choosing the initial polarization and vortex topological charges, as a result of the modulation of the caustic phase. We find that the SoP in the field cross-section rotates during propagation due to the existence of the vortex. The unique structured feature of the caustic vector vortex optical field opens the possibility of multi-manipulation of optical angular momentum fluxes and SoP, leading to more complex manipulation of the optical field scenarios. Thus this approach further expands the functionality of an optical system.

  • A 16 × 16-Element Slot Array Fed by Double-Layered Gap Waveguide Distribution Network at 160 GHz

    • In this article, a slot array with double-layered full-corporate-fed distribution network by ridge gap waveguide (RGW) in the G-band is presented. The array antenna proposed in this article contains $16\times 16$ -element radiation slots fed by air-filled ridge gap waveguide distribution network that achieves high-efficiency. Gap waveguide technology avoids the demand for perfect electrical contact in millimeter waves, therefore the expensive diffusion bonding and the laser welding processes are not demanded. Moreover, the high-accurate Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) machining is applied for the fabrication. Due to the limited layout space for the distribution network, two types of universal stepped cavity power dividers are presented in this article. The proposed array antenna is fed by a standard WR-5 waveguide at the bottom. Furthermore, the tested outcomes show that the proposed $16\times 16$ -element array has a gain larger than 30 dBi with over 50% antenna efficiency in the frequency range of 155–171 GHz.

  • Single-cell RNA sequencing of mouse brain and lung vascular and vessel-associated cell types

    • Vascular diseases are major causes of death, yet our understanding of the cellular constituents of blood vessels, including how differences in their gene expression profiles create diversity in vascular structure and function, is limited. In this paper, we describe a single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) dataset that defines vascular and vessel-associated cell types and subtypes in mouse brain and lung. The dataset contains 3,436 single cell transcriptomes from mouse brain, which formed 15 distinct clusters corresponding to cell (sub) types, and another 1,504 single cell transcriptomes from mouse lung, which formed 17 cell clusters. In order to allow user-friendly access to our data, we constructed a searchable database (http://betsholtzlab.org/VascularSingleCells/database.html). Our dataset constitutes a comprehensive molecular atlas of vascular and vessel-associated cell types in the mouse brain and lung, and as such provides a strong foundation for future studies of vascular development and diseases.
