    • An environmentally benign synthesis of a magnetically responsive carboxymethylated cellulose nanofibril-based material is reported. Applied experimental conditions lead to the in-situ formation of magnetite nanoparticles with primary particle sizes of 2.0–4.0 nm or secondary particles of 3.6–16.4 nm depending on whether nucleation occurred between individual carboxymethylated cellulose nanofibrils, or on exposed fibril surfaces. The increase in magnetite particle size on the cellulose fibril surfaces was attributed to Ostwald ripening, while the small particles formed within the carboxymethyl cellulose aggregates were presumably due to steric interactions. The magnetite nanoparticles were capable of coordinating to carboxymethylated cellulose nanofibrils to form large “fibre-like” assemblies. The confinement of small particles within aggregates of reductive cellulose molecules was most likely responsible for excellent conservation of magnetic characteristics on storage of this material. The possibility for using the material in drug delivery applications with release rate controlled by daylight illumination is presented. © 2022 The Author(s)

  • Radiologic and Long-Term Clinical Outcome From Treatment of Isolated Medial Orbital Wall Blowout Fractures

    • Blowout fractures in the medial orbital wall may lead to enophthalmos, ocular dysmotility, and diplopia. Ten consecutive patients with unilateral, isolated fractures of the medial orbital wall were retrospectively studied. The radiologic accuracy of the medial orbital wall reconstructions and the long-term clinical outcomes were assessed. All cases were treated through a bicoronal approach and by use of porous polyethylene-titanium implants. The total fracture area and the orbital volume increase from the blowout were measured on computed tomographic scans. Next, we evaluated the reconstruction in the posterior part of the medial wall. This was done by calculating the ratio between the defect area and the implant area located behind the anterior ethmoidal canal. The patients were examined at least 1 year after the operation, and the rates of enophthalmos and diplopia were evaluated. The mean fracture defect area was 2.45 cm(2) (range, 0.41-4.16 cm(2)), and the mean volume increase from the blowout fractures was 1.82 cm(3) (range, 0.53-2.76 cm(3)). The orbital volume was accurately restored in all patients. However, the ratio of implant to defect area behind the anterior ethmoidal canal ranged from 0% to 100% (mean, 47.3%). None of the patients had enophthalmos or diplopia at the long-term follow-up. The results confirm that restoration of orbital volume is important to prevent postoperative enophthalmos in isolated medial orbital blowout fractures. Complete reconstruction of the most posterior part of the medial orbital wall seems to be of lesser importance.

  • Magnetic characterisation of magnetite and hematite from the Blötberget apatite-iron-oxide deposits (Bergslagen), south-central Sweden

    • Rock magnetic measurements were carried out on drill core material and hand specimens from the Blötberget apatite-iron oxide deposit in the Bergslagen ore province, south-central Sweden, to characterise their magnetic properties. Measurements included several kinds of magnetic susceptibility and hysteresis parameters. Petrographic and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to independently identify and quantify the amount and type of magnetite and hematite. Two hematite-rich samples were studied with laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) to quantify the trace element chemistry in hematite and investigate the potential influence of trace elements on magnetic properties. Three aspects of this study are noteworthy. 1) Hematite-rich samples display strong anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility, which is likely to affect the appearance and modelling of magnetic anomalies. 2) The magnitude-drop in susceptibility across Curie and Néel temperature transitions show significant correlation with the respective weight percent (wt%) of magnetite and hematite. Temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements can therefore be used to infer the amounts of both magnetite and hematite. 3) observations of a strongly depressed Morin transition at ca -60 to -70 C (200 to 210 K) are made during low-temperature susceptibility measurements. This anomalous Morin transition is most likely related to trace amounts of V and Ti that substitute for Fe in the hematite. When taken together, these magnetic observations improve the understanding of the magnetic anomaly signature of the Blötberget apatite-iron oxide deposits and may potentially be utilised in a broader context when assessing similar (Paleoproterozoic) apatite-iron oxide systems.

    • The inhibitory effects demonstrated by activation of cannabinoid receptors (CB) on cancer proliferation and migration may also play critical roles in controlling bladder cancer (BC). CB expression on human normal and BC specimens was tested by immunohistochemistry. Human BC cells RT4 and RT112 were challenged with CB agonists and assessed for proliferation, apoptosis, and motility. Cellular sphingolipids (SL) constitution and metabolism were evaluated after metabolic labelling. CB1-2 were detected in BC specimens, but only CB2 was more expressed in the tumour. Both cell lines expressed similar CB2. Exposure to CB2 agonists inhibited BC growth, down-modulated Akt, induced caspase 3-activation and modified SL metabolism. Baseline SL analysis in cell lines showed differences linked to unique migratory behaviours and cytoskeletal re-arrangements. CB2 activation changed the SL composition of more aggressive RT112 cells by reducing (p amp;lt; 0.01) Gb3 ganglioside (-50 +/- 3%) and sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P, -40 +/- 4%), which ended up to reduction in cell motility (-46 +/- 5%) with inhibition of p-SRC. CB2-selective antagonists, gene silencing and an inhibitor of SL biosynthesis partially prevented CB2 agonist-induced effects on cell viability and motility. CB2 activation led to ceramide-mediated BC cell apoptosis independently of SL constitutive composition, which instead was modulated by CB2 agonists to reduce cell motility.

    • Artificial intelligence (AI) holds much promise for enabling highly desired imaging diagnostics improvements. One of the most limiting bottlenecks for the development of useful clinical-grade AI models is the lack of training data. One aspect is the large amount of cases needed and another is the necessity of high-quality ground truth annotation. The aim of the project was to establish and describe the construction of a database with substantial amounts of detail-annotated oncology imaging data from pathology and radiology. A specific objective was to be proactive, that is, to support undefined subsequent AI training across a wide range of tasks, such as detection, quantification, segmentation, and classification, which puts particular focus on the quality and generality of the annotations. The main outcome of this project was the database as such, with a collection of labeled image data from breast, ovary, skin, colon, skeleton, and liver. In addition, this effort also served as an exploration of best practices for further scalability of high-quality image collections, and a main contribution of the study was generic lessons learned regarding how to successfully organize efforts to construct medical imaging databases for AI training, summarized as eight guiding principles covering team, process, and execution aspects.

The results demonstrate that discretionary practices in various migration control situations (e.g., border zones, migration agencies, courts, public welfare services, and detention centers) are widespread but share common patterns. Frontline workers’ racialized prejudices and perceptions of migrant deservingness were the most dominant patterns found in the data, although there were some disagreements about which were most influential. Discretion of frontline workers was described as foremost detrimental to migrants, as itamplified the migrants’ vulnerable situations, even if it occasionally could increase individual migrants’ room for agency and strategic maneuvering. Contrary to the assumption underpinning the control gap-thesis in immigration policy literature that governments’ capacity to control migration is hampered by the significant discretion at the frontlines, many studies in our sample describe how governments shape the discretionary practices of frontline workers through informal, subtle, and opaque governing strategies. These informal governing strategies enable central governments to deflect responsibility for discriminatory and inhumane policy outcomes.

    • In this study the effects of cobalt substitutions in Fe5PB2 have been studied. An increased cobalt content reduces the magnetic exchange interactions. This has been concluded from a large, linear decrease in both the Curie temperature as well as the saturated magnetic moment. At high cobalt concentrations, cobalt prefers to order at the M(2) position in the crystal structure. A tunable Curie transition like this shows some prerequisites for magnetic cooling applications.The substitutional effects of cobalt in (Fe1–xCox)5PB2 have been studied with respect to crystalline structure and chemical order with X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The magnetic properties have been determined from magnetic measurements, and density functional theory calculations have been performed for the magnetic properties of both the end compounds, as well as the chemically disordered intermediate compounds. The crystal structure of (Fe1–xCox)5PB2 is tetragonal (space group I4/mcm) with two different metal sites, with a preference for cobalt atoms in the M(2) position (4c) at higher cobalt contents. The substitution also affects the magnetic properties with a decrease of the Curie temperature (TC) with increasing cobalt content, from 622 to 152 K for Fe5PB2 and (Fe0.3Co0.7)5PB2, respectively. Thus, the Curie temperature is dependent on composition, and it is possible to tune TC to a temperature near room temperature, which is one prerequisite for magnetic cooling materials.

    • Key points:How defects in muscle contractile function contribute to weakness in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) were systematically investigated.Weakness in whole muscles from late stage SOD1G93A mice was explained by muscle atrophy as seen by reduced mass and maximal force.On the other hand, surviving single muscle fibres in late stage SOD1G93A have preserved intracellular Ca2+ handling, normal force-generating capacity and increased fatigue resistance.These intriguing findings provide a substrate for therapeutic interventions to potentiate muscular capacity and delay the progression of the ALS phenotype.Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a motor neuron disease characterized by degeneration and loss of motor neurons, leading to severe muscle weakness and paralysis. The SOD1G93A mouse model of ALS displays motor neuron degeneration and a phenotype consistent with human ALS. The purpose of this study was to determine whether muscle weakness in ALS can be attributed to impaired intrinsic force generation in skeletal muscles. In the current study, motor neuron loss and decreased force were evident in whole flexor digitorum brevis (FDB) muscles of mice in the late stage of disease (125–150 days of age). However, in intact single muscle fibres, specific force, tetanic myoplasmic free [Ca2+] ([Ca2+]i), and resting [Ca2+]i remained unchanged with disease. Fibre-type distribution was maintained in late-stage SOD1G93A FDB muscles, but remaining muscle fibres displayed greater fatigue resistance compared to control and showed increased expression of myoglobin and mitochondrial respiratory chain proteins that are important determinants of fatigue resistance. Expression of genes central to both mitochondrial biogenesis and muscle atrophy where increased, suggesting that atrophic and compensatory adaptive signalling occurs simultaneously within the muscle tissue. These results support the hypothesis that muscle weakness in SOD1G93A is primarily attributed to neuromuscular degeneration and not intrinsic muscle fibre defects. In fact, surviving muscle fibres displayed maintained adaptive capacity with an exercise training-like phenotype, which suggests that compensatory mechanisms are activated that can function to delay disease progression.
