  • A new typology to characterize Italian digital entrepreneurs
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behaviour & Research. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1355-2554 .- 1758-6534. ; 26:2, s. 224-245
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Strong agreement in the extant business literature emphasizes that digital developments are key to economic growth internationally. This is in spite of the recorded high levels (up to 50 percent) of failure among digital companies and entrepreneurs. The purpose of this paper is to identify the digital debates in Italy, explore current policies and develop a typology that characterizes digital entrepreneurs (DEs) and their start-up companies in Italy.Design/methodology/approach: The digital debates and policies are explored through an extensive telephone survey of the self-perceptions and identified supports required by 348 Italian active DEs. Quantitative statistical techniques were used including factor analysis, cluster analysis and ANOVA, to identify motivations, profiles and critical success factors relevant to the sample.Findings: The study identifies three main clusters among the DEs: emerging very young; emerging business focused and experienced. These clusters vary with the entrepreneurs’ background and competence base, motivation and satisfaction factors. The different kinds of profiles require specific kinds of supporting policies identified by the sample that focus on financial, educational and/or networking provision.Originality/value: The paper affirms the central role of digital entities in modern economies expressed in the current literature and increases knowledge of the perceived success factors identified by DEs. The identification and classification of self-reported characteristics of Italian DEs and to what extent these characterizations might be useful for tailored interventions to support their success are the main contributions of this study. Accordingly, an authentic, original and self-reported portrayal has been constructed of the self-perceptions of Italian DEs. Finally, the study explores the implications for actions and new policies considering self-perceived profiles, needs and expectations of DEs.

  • Perceived risks in social media use : A longitudinal study among university students
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proceedings, TEEM'16. - New York : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 9781450347471 ; , s. 777-780
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This research was conducted in order to explore the attitude towards social media use among students in technical university. In particular, there is a need for novel interaction means in order to co-create and learn informally also beyond the traditional classroom. The motivation for seeking answer to the research question: "What risks students experience in social media use?" derived from the need to discover learning barriers in social media based learning environments, such as learning games, blogs and wikis for example. The assumptions, beliefs and attitudes towards social media are studied from the perspective of perceived risks of the students. The study was conducted among graduate students attending "Knowledge Management" course between the years 2014-2016. A web-based survey was executed annually, with a total of 206 respondents. Based on the results we were able to categorize the perceived risks and derive implications on how to lower learning barriers of students in social media based learning environments.

  • Business Process Management: Blockchain and Robotic Process Automation Forum
  • 2020
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This volume contains the proceedings of the Blockchain Forum and the RoboticProcess Automation (RPA) Forum, which took place during the week of September13–18, 2020. Both of the forums were organized as part of the 18th InternationalConference on Business Process Management (BPM 2020). Due to the COVID-19pandemic, the main conference itself and most of its associated events were heldvirtually. The authors of the blockchain papers that appear in these proceedings pre-sented their work to a virtual audience and engaged in online discussions with peers, practitioners, students, and others. The RPA Forum was organized in a hybrid form:Presenters had the opportunity to join online orin situ, in Seville, Spain. As part of theRPA Forum, additional industrial demonstrations and a panel were organized. MoeWynn of Queensland University of Technology, Australia, gave the keynote talk at theRPA Forum. The Blockchain Forum and the RPA Forum have in common that they are centeredaround an emerging and exciting technology. Blockchain is a sophisticated distributedledger technology, while RPA software allows for mimicking human, repetitiveactions. Each of these have the potential to fundamentally change how business pro-cesses are being orchestrated and executed in practice. The BPM community hasembraced these technologies as objects of analysis, design, development, and evalu-ation. The forums were also created to allow for a discussion with researchers fromotherfields who share their interest in these technologies, whether this is from aneconomic, sociological, business, mathematical, or other viewpoint. The BlockchainForum took place for the second time, after itsfirst successful appearance at BPM 2019in Vienna. The RPA Forum made its debut this year at BPM 2020.In the spring of 2020, when the deadlines for paper submissions to the forumsexpired, it was not clear how–if at all–these events would take place. At that time, parts of the world were already suffering from the spread of COVID-19. Despite theuncertainty, both events received a fair amount of submissions by author teams from awide range of institutes and countries. The Blockchain Forum received 10 papers ofwhich the top 5 were accepted as full papers; the RPA Forum even received 18submissions, which led to the acceptance of the top 9 as full papers. Given the 50%acceptance for each of the events, this rate applies to these proceedings as a whole. Inaddition, one submission to the RPA Forum was accepted as a short paper because ofits promising nature and timely contribution. For both forums, each submission wasreviewed by at least three members of the respective Program Committees. We hope that the reader of these proceedings will enjoy the versatility of theincluded papers, as well as the creativity that the authors put into their work. Manyof the papers present fresh perspectives, which we expect to shape how the involvedtechnologies will evolve over time and how they will be applied in practice. We wouldlike to thank the authors for submitting and presenting their work. We are also gratefulto our colleagues who served as reviewers in the screening process and provided the authors with meaningful and constructive feedback. We want to explicitly acknowl-edge the effort of Appian and MCCM Innovations for their contribution to the RPAForum: they provided an industrial perspective on RPA by demonstrating how thetechnology is applied in practice. Finally, we are indebted to all the people from theBPM 2020 team, who supported us and created the setting for both events. Without their help, these forums would not have taken place.

  • Digital Healthcare Platforms Enabling Remote Care Value Creation : The Patient Perspective
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: 2023 IEEE International Conference on Technology and Entrepreneurship, ICTE 2023. - 9798350303438 ; , s. 38-43
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Remote care is a growing area in healthcare, due to fast technological development offering suitable equipment and platform for distant medical consultation and care. Remote care includes a promise towards care that has the potential to improve the patient's quality of life, prevent unnecessary reception visits, reduce costs, and enable timely and early therapeutic intervention in situations where the patient's need for treatment is increasing. Even though the potential of remote care has been well recognized, many healthcare activities still need to be largely based on traditional appointments. Moreover, there is a need for empirical studies that investigate remote care possibilities and potential obstacles from the perspective of patients. This study investigates the value-creation potential of remote care provided and consumed through digital healthcare platforms from patients' perspectives. This study has an empirical focus, including a qualitative interview study of two remote care digital platforms from Lithuania and Finland.

  • A bibliometric study on authorship trends and research themes in knowledge management literature
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 12th International Forum on Knowledge Asset Dynamics, St. Petersburg, Russia 7-9 June 2017. - St. Petersburg, Russia : Proceedings IFKAD.... - 9788896687109 ; , s. 389-397
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the study is to identify the contribution of authors in the domain of Knowledge Management (KM). The underlying data is from two leading KM journals, namely, the Journal of Knowledge Management (JKM)and the Journal of Intellectual Capital (JIC). We downloaded articles from Thomson Reuters Web of Science (WoS), with JKM and JIC-specific searches resulting in 508 and 73 citing articles respectively. The timeframe of analysis was 2009-2016. This dataset was used to create co-citation network visualisations to provide insights into the clusters of authors and research topics. Measures such as Betweenness centrality and hubs-authorities (HITS) were used to identify significant authors and their key themes of interest. More specifically, network analysis identified six dominant research themes, it revealed a total of 14,422 authors being cited (depicted as nodes in the visualisation) with a total of 1,023,123 citations (edges). Based on the findings of this study, the paper will explore the specific themes and the intellectual turning points in KM research and its evolution. Our bibliometric analysis has practical significance for researchers since it recognises the dominant research areas, and by extension, it identifies those that are still in their infancy; the latter having the potential of representing an interesting research gap. The limitation of the study is that the underlying data is only from two journals (albeit, from the top two journals in KM), which may lead to partially biased results. In future, the aim is to also leverage the analysis to more KM journals, e.g., the top ten journals within the Serenko & Bontis (2013) most updated list.
