  • Simulation of Finished Goods Warehouse – Towards a Detailed Factory Simulation
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: [Host publication title missing].
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Customers of the packaging material industry are demanding shorter and more customized orders for each year. In many cases, the production has adapted to the new market demands. However, some finished goods warehouses are still adapted to the larger order sizes following a build-to-stock policy. In finished goods warehouses a shorter order sizes create problems, such as an increased amount of handling due to mixed orders. This paper presents a simulation model of a finished goods warehouse at a packaging material factory in Arganda, Spain. The model is used to perform different experiments that analyze potential improvements of the layout and the warehousing activities. The main advantage of using a simulation is that experiments with different scenarios of the layout and warehousing activities can be performed without affecting the performance of daily operations. Five scenarios were carried out to understand the potential behavior and performance of the warehouse. Two scenarios resulted in performance improvements as well as the reduction of the total cost. The overall best scenario included an additional loading dock for shipments. With this scenario, more goods can be loaded at the same time, resulting in lower inventory levels. Lower inventory levels in turn reduce the mixing of orders in the storage zones. Mixing of orders is directly correlated with double handling. Therefore, double handling is also reduced. For Tetra Pak, the investigation has contributed to an improved understanding of how customized orders affect the warehouse. This simulation model of the finished goods warehouse is also a step towards a detailed factory simulation where the relevant parts of the factory are simulated. The factory model will be a major asset for efficient planning of shorter production orders.

  • Estimation of patient skin dose in fluoroscopy : summary of a joint report by AAPM TG357 and EFOMP
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Medical physics (Lancaster). - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0094-2405 .- 2473-4209. ; 48:7, s. e671-e696
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Physicians use fixed C-arm fluoroscopy equipment with many interventional radiological and cardiological procedures. The associated effective dose to a patient is generally considered low risk, as the benefit-risk ratio is almost certainly highly favorable. However, X-ray-induced skin injuries may occur due to high absorbed patient skin doses from complex fluoroscopically guided interventions (FGI). Suitable action levels for patient-specific follow-up could improve the clinical practice. There is a need for a refined metric regarding follow-up of X-ray-induced patient injuries and the knowledge gap regarding skin dose-related patient information from fluoroscopy devices must be filled. The most useful metric to indicate a risk of erythema, epilation or greater skin injury that also includes actionable information is the peak skin dose, that is, the largest dose to a region of skin.Materials and Methods: The report is based on a comprehensive review of best practices and methods to estimate peak skin dose found in the scientific literature and situates the importance of the Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine (DICOM) standard detailing pertinent information contained in the Radiation Dose Structured Report (RDSR) and DICOM image headers for FGI devices. Furthermore, the expertise of the task group members and consultants have been used to bridge and discuss different methods and associated available DICOM information for peak skin dose estimation. Results: The report contributes an extensive summary and discussion of the current state of the art in estimating peak skin dose with FGI procedures with regard to methodology and DICOM information. Improvements in skin dose estimation efforts with more refined DICOM information are suggested and discussed. Conclusions: The endeavor of skin dose estimation is greatly aided by the continuing efforts of the scientific medical physics community, the numerous technology enhancements, the dose-controlling features provided by the FGI device manufacturers, and the emergence and greater availability of the DICOM RDSR. Refined and new dosimetry systems continue to evolve and form the infrastructure for further improvements in accuracy. Dose-related content and information systems capable of handling big data are emerging for patient dose monitoring and quality assurance tools for large-scale multihospital enterprises.

  • Adoption of ITS for dangerous goods road transportation – a review and research agenda
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ad transport of dangerous goods is due to its inherent risk associated with a potential impact far higher than the small volumes might suggest, and has therefore been the target of numerous ITS-related initiatives. However, there are few indications of actual working ITS solutions for dangerous goods. In this paper we conduct an empirical investigation of past projects and research to analyze the nature of the challenges of adopting ITS for dangerous goods. In line with prior findings on freight related advanced ITS, we find that challenges pertaining to incentives and business models, organizing and industry structure play a crucial, yet unrecognized part.

  • On the complexity of matrix reduction over finite fields
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Advances in Applied Mathematics. - : Academic Press. - 0196-8858 .- 1090-2074. ; 39:4, s. 428-452
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study matrix elimination over finite fields, and present an algorithm which is asymptotically faster than the traditional Gauss--Jordan elimination. We also bound the average and worst-case complexity for the problem, proving that our algorithm is close to being optimal, and show related concentration results for random matrices.Next we present the results of a large computational study of the complexities for small matrices and fields. Here we determine the exact distribution of the complexity for matrices from $\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$, with $n$ an $q$ smallFinally we consider an extension of the problems studied for finite fields to finite semifields. We give a conjecture on the behaviour of a natural analogue of $\mathrm{GL}_{n}$ for semifields and prove this for a certain class of semifields.

  • Early shunt surgery improves survival in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Neurology. - : Wiley. - 1351-5101 .- 1468-1331. ; 28:4, s. 1153-1159
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and purpose To examine the effect of delayed compared to early planning of shunt surgery on survival, in patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH), a long-term follow-up case-control study of patients exposed to a severe delay of treatment was performed. Methods In 2010-2011 our university hospital was affected by an administrative and economic failure that led to postponement of several elective neurosurgical procedures. This resulted in an unintentional delay of planning of treatment for a group of iNPH patients, referred to as iNPH(Delayed) (n = 33, waiting time for shunt surgery 6-24 months). These were compared to patients treated within 3 months, iNPH(Early) (n = 69). Primary outcome was mortality. Dates and underlying causes of death were provided by the Cause of Death Registry. Survival was analysed by Kaplan-Meier plots and a Cox proportional hazard model adjusted for potential confounders. Results Median follow-up time was 6.0 years. Crude 4-year mortality was 39.4% in iNPH(Delayed) compared to 10.1% in iNPH(Early) (p = 0.001). The adjusted hazard ratio in iNPH(Delayed) was 2.57; 95% confidence interval 1.13-5.83, p = 0.024. Causes of death were equally distributed between the groups except for death due to malignancy which was not seen in iNPH(Delayed) but in 4/16 cases in iNPH(Early) (p = 0.044). Conclusions The present data indicate that shunt surgery is effective in iNPH and that early treatment increases survival.

  • Age and sex determination of mallards Anas platyrhynchos in autumn
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Ornis Svecica. - 1102-6812 .- 2003-2633. ; 26, s. 61-81
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The mallard is a well-known and important species in migration ecology, game management, and epidemiology. Males and females are generally easily told apart, whereas ageing isproblematic, due to individual timing of the moult cycle and lack of easily defined agecriteria. From examination and photographic documentation of mallards caught within a longtermringing program at Ottenby Bird Observatory (56°12′N, 16°24′E), we describe ninecharacters of plumage and bare parts to be used for ageing mallards in autumn. The reliabilityof these characters was tested by letting experienced bird ringers determine putative age ofbirds from photos. Age determination from any single character proved to be uncertain, as therate of correctly assigned mallard photos of each character was in the range of 51-85% formales and 48-89% for females. For both sexes, the lowest figure represented post-humeralsand the highest represented tertials. Rectrices, tertial coverts, and greater coverts also hadreasonably high scores (71-85%). With all characters at hand, 91% of the males and 95% ofthe females were correctly identified to age. As young mallards, with the progress of prebreedingmoult (completed from October onwards), acquire tail and tertials identical to adults, untypical individuals are better not assigned to an age category.
