  • Graphene Decorated with Iron Oxide Nanoparticles for Highly Sensitive Interaction with Volatile Organic Compounds

    • Gases, such as nitrogen dioxide, formaldehyde and benzene, are toxic even at very low concentrations. However, so far there are no low-cost sensors available with sufficiently low detection limits and desired response times, which are able to detect them in the ranges relevant for air quality control. In this work, we address both, detection of small gas amounts and fast response times, using epitaxially grown graphene decorated with iron oxide nanoparticles. This hybrid surface is used as a sensing layer to detect formaldehyde and benzene at concentrations of relevance (low parts per billion). The performance enhancement was additionally validated using density functional theory calculations to see the effect of decoration on binding energies between the gas molecules and the sensor surface. Moreover, the time constants can be drastically reduced using a derivative sensor signal readout, allowing the sensor to work at detection limits and sampling rates desired for air quality monitoring applications.

  • Efficiency of using spatial analysis for Norway spruce progeny tests in Sweden

    • Key message Spatial analysis could improve the accuracy of genetic analyses, as well as increasing the accuracy of predicting breeding values and genetic gain for Norway spruce trials.Context Spatial analysis has been increasingly used in genetic evaluation of field trials in tree species. However, the efficiency of spatial analysis relative to the analysis using the conventional experimental designs or pre- and post-blocking method in Swedish genetic trials has not been systematically evaluated.Aims This study aims to examine the effectiveness of spatial analysis in improving the accuracy of predicting breeding values and genetic gain.Methods Spatial analysis, using separable first-order autoregressive processes of residuals in rows and columns, was used in nine types of trait classes from 145 field trials of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) in Sweden.Results Ninety-six percent of variables (traits) were converged for the spatial model. Large trials with a large block variance tend to have a larger improvement from the model of experimental design to spatial model in accuracy. Growth and Pilodyn measurement traits showed greater improvements in log likelihood, accuracy, and genetic gain. Block variance was reduced by more than 80% for trait height and diameter using spatial analysis, indicating that it is more effective using both pre-blocking and post-blocking analyses in Swedish Norway spruce trials. The prediction accuracy for diameter and height for progeny breeding values showed an increase of 3.6 and 3.4%, respectively. The improvement of efficiency for growth traits is also related to the geographical location of test sites, tree age, number of survival trees, and the spacing of the trial.Conclusion The spatial analysis approach is more efficient in Swedish Norway spruce trials than the conventional methods using models based on the experimental design.

    • Several coniferous species belonging to the Pinaceae family can be propagated via somatic embryogenesis, while species belonging to the Cupressaceae family cannot. The aim of this study was to identify possibilities and limitations with somatic embryogenesis in Cupressaceae. Juniperus communis was chosen as model species. We show that a high initiation frequency of embryogenic cell lines can be established from intact megagametophytes at the time when intensive cleavage polyembryogeny takes place. The embryogenic cell lines proliferate fast on medium lacking plant growth regulators. Early somatic embryos develop after transfer to medium with decreased content of nitrogen and calcium. The early embryos mature after exposure to abscisic acid. Mature cotyledonary embryos germinate after partial desiccation. A high proportion, over 40%, of the germinating embryos retain the embryogenic potential in the basal part, resulting in development of new embryogenic tissue

  • Facing the Global Economic Crisis : The case of Swedish Heavy Vehicle Subcontractors

    • This article investigates organisational responses to the 2008 economic crisis within a group of seven subcontractors in the Swedish heavy vehicle industry. Although the firms had similar exposures to the crisis their performances varied extensively. One year after the crisis began, some firms were still encountering financial problems, yet others had orchestrated a recovery that was generating healthy cash flows. Evaluation of in-depth interviews with key organisational members and standardised financial indicators suggests that the subcontractors' performances in the crisis were determined by their ability to attain and evaluate “deep knowledge” from stakeholders and “wide knowledge” from other external actors. Findings demonstrate how subcontractors' performances in an economic crisis are related to the implementation of dynamic capabilities and indicate how existing research on crisis management can be extended.

    • We greatly appreciate the care and thought that is evident in the 10 commentaries that discuss our debate paper, the majority of which argued in favor of a formalized ICD-11 gaming disorder. We agree that there are some people whose play of video games is related to life problems. We believe that understanding this population and the nature and severity of the problems they experience should be a focus area for future research. However, moving from research construct to formal disorder requires a much stronger evidence base than we currently have. The burden of evidence and the clinical utility should be extremely high, because there is a genuine risk of abuse of diagnoses. We provide suggestions about the level of evidence that might be required: transparent and preregistered studies, a better demarcation of the subject area that includes a rationale for focusing on gaming particularly versus a more general behavioral addictions concept, the exploration of non-addiction approaches, and the unbiased exploration of clinical approaches that treat potentially underlying issues, such as depressive mood or social anxiety first. We acknowledge there could be benefits to formalizing gaming disorder, many of which were highlighted by colleagues in their commentaries, but we think they do not yet outweigh the wider societal and public health risks involved. Given the gravity of diagnostic classification and its wider societal impact, we urge our colleagues at the WHO to err on the side of caution for now and postpone the formalization.
