- To suffer from kidney failure requiring dialysis is a major setback on the patient’s life situation. The trend in dialysis care is that the patients should be increasingly involved in their own dialysis treatment. The aim of this study was to illustrate the patients’ experiences of participation in their own dialysis treatment. A qualitative approach was chosen and the study consists of nine narrative interviews with patients in self-care dialysis who had hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis at two different hospitals. The results are categorized into the areas of safety and freedom. In order to feel safe the patients must have good knowledge of their disease and dialysis treatment. Patients experience freedom when they participate in their own dialysis treatment and may manage their dialysis schedule. The result also shows that the patients perceive themselves to be healthier when they are able to perform their own dialysis. The major challenge for today’s dialysis care is to involve the patients more in their own treatment and to offer them greater flexibility.

- In this article we compare advice-giving in academic supervision meetings at Swedish-speaking university departments in Sweden and Finland. Working within the field of variational pragmatics and analyzing interaction in detail we show how Sweden-Swedish and Finland-Swedish supervisors and students, as experts and non-experts in an institutional setting, initiate and respond to advice. The data consist of video and/or audio recordings of eight naturally occurring supervision meetings. All meetings show a similar pattern regarding the frequency and sequential structure of advice initiation and reception. The main differences between the two data sets occur in how advice is formulated and acknowledged. In the Sweden-Swedish data, advice is often given with strong mitigation and responded to by upgraded acknowledgements. In the Finland-Swedish data, advice delivery is more succinct and acknowledgements are often neutral.

Focusing on the linguistic landscapes of selected cities in northern and southern Europe, it sheds light on how urban areas with diverse profiles differ, and how the linguistic landscapes change through tourism and migration, or in times of crisis. The chapters put forward sophisticated and novel ways of approaching urban sociolinguistics and they enhance understanding of the challenges and opportunities included in the study of sociolinguistic variation in these linguistic landscapes.

- The focus of this article is on OKAY as a resource for regulating language and constructingnorm centres in authentic consultation meetings related to academic writing and recordedin Finland and Sweden. It gives an overview of all occurrences of OKAY in theinteractional data in question, revealing that the word occurs frequently in academicwriting consultations in Finnish, Finland Swedish, and Sweden Swedish. There aresimilarities in the frequency of its use and the distribution of occurrences betweencounsellor and student in the Finnish and the Finland-Swedish data, whereas the SwedenSwedish counselling interactions follow a slightly different pattern. Through the lens ofconversation analysis and systemic–functional linguistics, we further demonstrate how thecounsellors and the students use the evaluative content word OKAY as a resource forregulating both academic writing and the counselling interaction, and thereby positionthemselves epistemically and orient towards different centres of norms.

- I institutionella samtal finns det klara mål för interaktionen och precis som i de flesta andra samtal en strävan efter samförstånd och en trevlig stämning. I handledningssamtal kan strävan efter ett gynnsamt samtalsklimat och en bra relation mellan deltagarna t.ex. visa sig i att handledaren framför sina råd och anmärkningar på ett sätt som visar förståelse och respekt för studenten, medan studenten ger uttryck för sin positiva inställning till och uppskattning av de råd som ges. Inom ett nystartat samarbete mellan forskare från Finland och Sverige utreder vi på vilket sätt studenter i finska, finlandssvenska och sverigesvenska handledningssamtal visar att de förhåller sig positivt till de råd och förslag de får i språkhandledningssamtal.1 Vårt material består av autentiska sverigesvenska, finlandssvenska och finska språkhandledningssamtal, insamlade under 2014 och 2015. I de handledningssamtal vi studerat bemöter studenten i praktiken alltid handledarens råd med positiva responser av olika slag, och vi hittar endast sällan tecken på att studenten uttryckligen avvisar handledarens råd (sådana sekvenser diskuteras däremot av Waring 2005; 2007 och Vehviläinen 2017). I den här artikeln studerar vi positiva studentresponser närmare och bidrar på så sätt med nya infallsvinklar som kompletterar tidigare forskning om pragmatisk variation och interaktion i handledningssamtal (t.ex. Vehviläinen 2009; Henricson & Nelson 2017). Vi utgår ifrån ett material insamlat i tre närliggande kulturella kontexter och koncentrerar oss på att studera fenomenet positiva studentresponser i materialet som helhet. Syftet är att kartlägga med vilka slags positiva responser studenterna återkopplar till handledarens turer. Den huvudsakliga fråga vi söker svar på är: Hur visar studenterna att handledarna bidragit till skrivprocessen? Vår analys av de tre materialsamlingarna är inte genomgående komparativ, men i analysen noterar vi ställvis uppenbara skillnader mellan samtalen insamlade i sverigesvensk, finlandssvensk och finsk universitetsmiljö. Utifrån den grund som läggs här är det vår avsikt att i kommande forskning utnyttja våra parallella materialsamlingar för att mer systematiskt jämföra de interaktionella mönster som framkommer i de sverigesvenska, finlandssvenska och finska handledningssamtal vi studerat. Vi inleder artikeln med en forskningsbakgrund samt allmänna uppfattningar om interaktion i Finland och i Sverige. Sedan redogör vi för material och metod, varefter vi presenterar exempel på olika typer av positiva responser. Genomgången mynnar ut i ett exempel som belyser en av dessa responstyper: uttryck för ökad insikt. Artikeln avrundas med en sammanfattande diskussion.

- When we wish each other good luck, for example before a job interview or a sports event, we might use a fixed expression such as ‘I’ll keep my fingers crossed’, sometimes accompanied by an illustrating gesture. Such a gesture, with a specific and conventionalised meaning, is called an emblem. Emblems can accompany verbal counterparts or convey the same message on their own. In Finland and Sweden, we usually do not cross our fingers; instead, we hold our thumbs. How the gesture illustrating the verbal expression ‘to hold one’s thumbs’ is performed, however, has not been explored in detail, and this study is an attempt to fill this gap. Encyclopedia descriptions suggest that Swedes conceal their thumb in a tight fist, while Finns let their thumb stick straight up from a closed hand. Which gesture the Swedish-speaking inhabitants of bilingual Finland use has not been discussed previously, but in general, Finland-Swedes have been noted to use a language with traces of both Swedish and Finnish patterns. In this paper, we explore whether this general tendency is also reflected in gestures, and specifically in the emblem expressing ‘to hold one’s thumbs’. The data consist of 250 gestures documented in photographs and interviews in one city in Sweden and four cities in Finland. The analysis confirms the general tendency of a concealed Swedish thumb and an upright Finnish thumb, but also reveals some variation in how the gesture is made among Finland-Swedes. The results are discussed in relation to regional variation and language contact.

- This paper presents a study of pronouns used in Sweden-Swedish and Finland-Swedish supervision meetings. In both countries, supervisors use similar sets of pronouns when commenting on an academic essay written by a student. Often, the supervisor addresses the student directly, e.g. but you could write x, or uses an indefinite pronoun, e.g. perhaps one could simply write x. Sometimes, the supervisor makes suggestions while referring to herself as a writer, e.g. I would write x. The supervisor may also use an inclusive we-authorship, e.g. well we cannot write x. This use of we is predominantly found in the Sweden-Swedish data. In relation to politeness strategies, our analysis indicates that pronouns appear in a more direct and clear-cut way (cf. respect strategies) in Finland-Swedish, and with a stronger focus on creating common ground and fostering group membership (cf. solidarity strategies) in Sweden-Swedish. Throughout, we point to differences and similarities between the dominant and the non-dominant variety of Swedish.

- Sedan 1963 har det vid olika universitet i Sverige och Finland regelbundet anordnats sammankomster för svenskans beskrivning. Vid dessa har forskningsresultat som rör svenska språkets uppbyggnad och användning presenterats och diskuterats.Den trettiotredje sammankomsten ägde rum i Helsingfors den 15–17 maj 2013. Konferensens tema var ”Svenska som pluricentriskt språk”, dvs. ett språk med flera nationella centrum eller normcentrum. Utöver detta tema behandlade föredragen en bredd av ämnen, som text- och genreanalys, språklig variation, språkinlärning, översättning och grammatik. I denna volym publiceras två av plenarföredragen och 48 av sektionsföredragen.Som värd för konferensen stod Finska, finskugriska och nordiska institutionen vid Helsingfors universitet.
