  • Policy instruments towards a sustainable waste management
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - Basel : MDPI AG. - 2071-1050. ; 5:3, s. 841-881
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to suggest and discuss policy instruments that could lead towards a more sustainable waste management. The paper is based on evaluations from a large scale multi-disciplinary Swedish research program. The evaluations focus on environmental and economic impacts as well as social acceptance. The focus is on the Swedish waste management system but the results should be relevant also for other countries. Through the assessments and lessons learned during the research program we conclude that several policy instruments can be effective and possible to implement. Particularly, we put forward the following policy instruments: “Information”; “Compulsory recycling of recyclable materials”; “Weight-based waste fee in combination with information and developed recycling systems”; “Mandatory labeling of products containing hazardous chemicals”, “Advertisements on request only and other waste minimization measures”; and “Differentiated VAT and subsidies for some services”. Compulsory recycling of recyclable materials is the policy instrument that has the largest potential for decreasing the environmental impacts with the configurations studied here. The effects of the other policy instruments studied may be more limited and they typically need to be implemented in combination in order to have more significant impacts. Furthermore, policy makers need to take into account market and international aspects when implementing new instruments. In the more long term perspective, the above set of policy instruments may also need to be complemented with more transformational policy instruments that can significantly decrease the generation of waste.

  • Early changes in 2-deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-D-glucose metabolism in squamous-cell carcinoma during chemotherapy in vivo and in vitro.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Cancer Biotherapy & Radiopharmaceuticals. - : Mary Ann Liebert Inc. - 1557-8852 .- 1084-9785. ; 24:3, s. 327-332
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate early changes in uptake of 2-deoxy-2-[(18)F]fluoro-D-glucose (FDG) in vivo and in vitro in a squamous-cell carcinoma (SCC) cell line originating from a human head and neck SCC during cytotoxic therapy with respect to metabolism in tumor cells and in surrounding stromal tissue. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 60 nude mice with xenografted SCC, 50 animals were treated with cisplatin. Early changes in the tumor FDG uptake following therapy were evaluated sequentially with phosphor imaging. Using this technique, areas with focal hypermetabolism were detected. The cells creating the focal hypermetabolism were then identified histopathologically on the corresponding sections. In addition, early FDG uptake versus the number of viable tumor cells was measured in vitro following cisplatin treatment. RESULTS: An early transient increase in FDG uptake in tumor cells was seen on day 1 in treated tumors, followed by a rapid decrease confirmed by subsequent tumor regression. This metabolic flare was present in all treated tumors but not in the controls. In vitro, an increase in FDG uptake per cell was observed. CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide new insights into the early metabolic changes in squamous-cell carcinomas subjected to cytotoxic therapy and thus contribute to the discussion on the feasibility of early predictive PET studies.

  • A Study on Engine Health Monitoring in the Frequency Domain
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power. - : ASME International. - 1528-8919 .- 0742-4795. ; 133:8, s. Art. no. 081604-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most of the techniques developed to date for module performance analysis rely on steady-state measurements from a single operating point to evaluate the level of deterioration of an engine. One of the major difficulties associated with this estimation problem comes from its underdetermined nature. It results from the fact that the number of health parameters exceeds the number of available sensors. Among the panel of remedies to this issue, a few authors have investigated the potential of using data collected during a transient operation of the engine. A major outcome of these studies is an improvement in the assessed health condition. The present study proposes a framework that formalizes this observation for a given class of input signals. The analysis is performed in the frequency domain, following the lines of system identification theory. More specifically, the mean-squared estimation error is shown to drastically decrease when using transient input signals. This study is conducted with an engine model representative of a commercial turbofan.

  • Full-Custom vs. Standard-Cell Design Flow - An Adder Case Study
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Asia South-Pacific Design Automation Conference (ASPDAC), Kitakyushu, 21-24 January 2003. - 0780376595 ; 2003-January, s. 507-510
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Full-custom design is considered superior to standard-cell design when a high-performance circuit is requested. The structured routing of critical wires is considered to be the most important contributor to this performance gap. However, this is only true for bitsliced designs, such as ripple-carry adders, but not for designs with inter-bitslice interconnections spanning several bitslices, such as tree adders and reduction-tree multipliers. It is found that standard-cell design techniques scale better with the data width than full-custom bitsliced layouts for designs dominated by inter-bitslice interconnections.
