  • Common variants in Alzheimer’s disease and risk stratification by polygenic risk scores
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 12:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Genetic discoveries of Alzheimer’s disease are the drivers of our understanding, and together with polygenetic risk stratification can contribute towards planning of feasible and efficient preventive and curative clinical trials. We first perform a large genetic association study by merging all available case-control datasets and by-proxy study results (discovery n = 409,435 and validation size n = 58,190). Here, we add six variants associated with Alzheimer’s disease risk (near APP, CHRNE, PRKD3/NDUFAF7, PLCG2 and two exonic variants in the SHARPIN gene). Assessment of the polygenic risk score and stratifying by APOE reveal a 4 to 5.5 years difference in median age at onset of Alzheimer’s disease patients in APOE ɛ4 carriers. Because of this study, the underlying mechanisms of APP can be studied to refine the amyloid cascade and the polygenic risk score provides a tool to select individuals at high risk of Alzheimer’s disease. © 2021, The Author(s).

  • Emerging consensus on net energy paves the way for improved integrated assessment modeling
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Energy & Environmental Science. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 1754-5692 .- 1754-5706. ; 17:1, s. 11-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Extracting, processing, and delivering energy requires energy itself, which reduces the net energy available to society and yields considerable socioeconomic implications. Yet, most mitigation pathways and transition models overlook net energy feedbacks, specifically related to the decline in the quality of fossil fuel deposits, as well as energy requirements of the energy transition. Here, we summarize our position across 8 key points that converge to form a prevailing understanding regarding EROI (Energy Return on Investment), identify areas of investigation for the Net Energy Analysis community, discuss the consequences of net energy in the context of the energy transition, and underline the issues of disregarding it. Particularly, we argue that reductions in net energy can hinder the transition if demand-side measures are not implemented and adopted to limit energy consumption. We also point out the risks posed for the energy transition in the Global South, which, while being the least responsible for climate change, may be amongst the most impacted by both the climate crisis and net energy contraction. Last, we present practical avenues to consider net energy in mitigation pathways and Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs), emphasizing the necessity of fostering collaborative efforts among our different research communities.

  • Experimental investigation of the spin reorientation of Co/Au based magnetic nanodot arrays
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B (Condensed Matter and Materials Physics). - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 77:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • (Co/Au) and (Au/ Co/ Au) nanomagnet arrays grown on nanostructured self-organized SiGe templates have been characterized by means of x-ray photoemission electron microscopy, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, and by extended x-ray absorption spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. In-plane magnetization is observed at room temperature for practically all Co thicknesses, a stable macroscopic perpendicular magnetic order only at low temperature. The spin reorientation transition in these dot arrays takes place for smaller Co thicknesses over a broader thickness range than in two-dimensional systems. This finding appears to be related with structural relaxation modifications, occurring within the local Co atom environment, which are not necessarily connected with the orbital moment variations. These variations appear in the form of a systematic increase, correlated with the existence of out-of-plane magnetization.

  • Electron microscopy based studies of catalytically grown semiconductor nanowires
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Beam Injection Based Nanocharacterization of Advanced Materials. - 9788130802268 ; , s. 1-35
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We give an introduction to modern electron microscopy techniques, applied to semiconductor structures. We concentrate on the analytical capabilities of high resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and luminescence-based analysis, cathodoluminescence, in the scanning electron microscope. For the TEM, we will demonstrate a number of techniques and detection schemes, such as energy dispersive analysis of X-rays, electron energy loss spectroscopy, high-angle annular darkfield, and Fourier and strain mapping. The capabilities of the techniques are illustrated by various semiconductor nanowires (NWs), grown catalytically by gold seed-particles on planar substrates. These structures include homogeneous NWs, heterostructured NWs, core-shell NWs and branched NWs.
