- A computationally efficient global optimizationmethod, the differential evolution algorithm (DEA), is proposedfor the synthesis of uniform amplitude arrays of two classes,i.e., unequally spaced arrays with equal phases and unequalphases. Phase-only synthesis and the synthesis of uniformly exitedunequally spaced arrays (position only synthesis) are comparedand it is seen that, by using the unequal spacing, the number ofarray elements can be significantly reduced for attaining reducedsidelobe levels. From the DEA-based synthesis of unequallyspaced arrays with uniform amplitudes and unequal phases, itis found that a tradeoff exists between the size of the unequallyspaced arrays and the range of phases for the same radiationcharacteristics. The proposed synthesis technique using uniformamplitudes, unequal spacing, and unequal phases (position-phasesynthesis) not only decreases the size of the array for the samesidelobe level compared to both the phase-only synthesis andposition-only synthesis but also retains their advantages.
