  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Following Walnut Footprints (Juglans regia L.) - Cultivation and Culture, Folklore and History.. - 9789462610033 ; :Scripta Horticulrae No 17, s. 379-385
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The English walnut (Juglans regia L.) has a long-standing history of cultivation in the Nordic countries, although the region represents the northern limit of its distribution. While there are no walnut orchards in neither Denmark, Sweden nor Norway, individual trees have been planted in private gardens and public areas since medieval times, when the species is supposed to have been introduced (Nilsson 1958). Today, walnut trees can be found in Denmark, the southern parts of Sweden and along the coast of Norway. These areas coincide with fruit growing district where apples, pears, plums and cherries are traditionally grown.

  • Overview of Plum Breeding in Europe
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Acta Horticulturae. - 0567-7572 .- 2406-6168. ; 981, s. 91-98
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Europe, the plum is one of the main fruit species, occupying an area of about 500,000 ha and ensuring production of about 3,000 million tones. The important countries regarding to plums (Serbia, Romania, Italy, Germany, Bulgaria etc.) recorded declines of production due mainly to viral diseases which destroyed the orchards and impaired the fruit quality. Therefore, these countries developed extensive breeding programs with the common objectives (productivity, fruit quality and resistance / tolerance to PPV) and specific objectives (late blooming, self-fertility, short growing period, different ripening times, spur fructification, resistance to diseases and frost). In the last 20 years 170 plum cultivars from these programs were released (Romania 38 cvs., Germany 28 cvs., Belarus 15 cvs., Serbia 14 cvs., Italy 13 cvs., Sweden 12 cvs., Bulgaria 11 cvs., Republic of Moldova 10 cvs., Latvia 9 cvs., France 6 cvs., United Kingdom 3 cvs., Czech Republic 3 cvs. and Norway 1 cv.).

  • Plum cultivars in Sweden: History and conservation for future use
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Latvian Academy of Sciences. Section B: Natural, Exact and Applied Sciences. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 1407-009X. ; 73, s. 207-213
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article reviews the history of plum cultivation and cultivars in Sweden with the aim to describe important heirloom cultivars and to explain how they are conserved in the Swedish National Gene Bank. Commercial plum production in Sweden started around 1890 and was initially in part based on small-fruited local cultivars grown on their own roots. Along with the development of a modern Swedish nursery industry and experimental research the use of grafted trees grew in importance. In the mid-1950s, the yearly plum production in Sweden was estimated to be approximately 2000 tonnes. Since the mid-1980s, production has declined and it is now only about 250 tonnes per year. The work to safeguard heirloom cultivars began with a national inventory in 2005 and since 2012, so-called mandate cultivars have been planted in the Swedish National Gene Bank at Alnarp. Today 45 plum cultivars are preserved with two trees in the gene bank at Alnarp and two trees in local clonal archives.

  • Strawberry Cultivars Preserved in the Swedish National Gene Bank
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Latvian Academy of Sciences. Section B: Natural, Exact and Applied Sciences. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 1407-009X .- 2255-890X. ; 76, s. 402-408
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Some 35 cultivars of Fragaria are preserved in the Swedish National Gene Bank for vegetatively propagated crops, which opened in 2016. The genebank includes a field collection in Alnarp, southern Sweden, and a back-up collection of virus-free plants at the Swedish Elite Plant Station. Here we document how the cultivars, the so-called mandate cultivars, were selected. Swedish origin was the primary criteria used in the selection process. In this category cultivars from historic Swedish breeding programmes are of particular interest. During 80 years, starting in the 1920s and ending in the late 1990s, 16 strawberries including three Fragaria × vescana hybrids were developed by Swedish breeders. Unfortunately, for three of these the accessions in the genebank are uncertain and four have not yet been recovered. The 16 cultivars bred in Sweden are presented with their year of introduction, parentage and short descriptions. Additionally, we also briefly describe local cultivars of strawberries and wild strawberries. Another category of mandate cultivars are foreign cultivars with a growing tradition in Sweden dating back to before 1966. Their age, country of origin, and importance for Swedish cultivation are discussed.
