  • Rapidity-alignment and p(T) compensation of particle pairs in hadronic Z(0) decays
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - 0370-2693. ; 533:3-4, s. 243-252
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Observation is made of rapidity-alignment of K+K- and (p) over barp pairs which results from their asymmetric orientation in rapidity, with respect to the direction from primary quark to antiquark. The K+K- and (p) over barp data are consistent with predictions from the fragmentation string model. However, the (p) over barp data strongly disagree with the conventional implementation of the cluster model. The non-perturbative process of 'gluon splitting to diquarks' has to be incorporated into the cluster model for it to agree with the data. Local conservation of PT between particles nearby in rapidity (i.e., p(T) compensation) is analysed with respect to the thrust direction for pi(+)pi(-), K+K-, and (p) over barp pairs. In this case, the string model provides fair agreement with the data. The cluster model is incompatible with the data for all three particle pairs. The model with its central premiss of isotropically-decaying clusters predicts a p(T) correlation not seen in the data. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Search for charged Higgs bosons in e(+)e(-) collisions root s=189-202 GeV
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - 0370-2693. ; 525:1-2, s. 17-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A search for pair-produced charged Higgs bosons was performed in the high energy data collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP II at centre-of-mass energies from 189 GeV to 202 GeV. The three different final states, taunutaunu, c (s) over bar(c) over bars and c (s) over bar taunu were considered. New methods were applied to reject wrong hadronic jet pairings and for the tau identification, where a discriminator based on tau polarisation and polar angles was used. No excess of data compared to the expected Standard Model processes was observed and the existence of a charged Higgs boson with mass lower than 71.5 GeV/c(2) is excluded at the 95% confidence level. • Study of inclusive J/psi production in two-photon collisions at LEP II with the DELPHI detector
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - 0370-2693. ; 565:1-4, s. 76-86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inclusive J/psi production in photon-photon collisions has been observed at LEP II beam energies. A clear signal from the reaction gammagamma --> J/psi + X is seen. The number of observed N(J/psi --> mu(+)mu(-)) events is 36+/-7 for an integrated luminosity of 617 pb(-1), yielding a cross-section of sigma(J/psi + X) = 45+/-9(stat) +/- 17(syst) pb. Based on a study of the event shapes of different types of gammagamma processes in the PYTHIA program, we conclude that (74+/-22) % of the observed J/psi events are due to 'resolved' photons, the dominant contribution of which is most probably due to the gluon content of the photon. • Participation in leisure activities and binge drinking in adults – findings from a Swedish general population sample.
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Addiction Research & Theory. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1606-6359 .- 1476-7392. ; 20:2, s. 172-182
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this cross-sectional study was to estimate the associations between participation in different leisure activities and binge drinking in Swedish adults. The study was based on a questionnaire in a general population sample (n=3567) of individuals aged 19–64 years old. Men and women were defined as binge drinkers if they reported that they had consumed alcohol at least once a month, and stated that at a typical drinking occasion they consumed five or more standard glasses (12g of alcohol). Multivariate analyses found associations between binge drinking and socializing with friends among men aged 19–30 years (odds ratio, OR 2.88), in the 31–64 years old age group (OR 1.87). Corresponding results was found in younger women (OR 2.36). A higher OR was also found for younger men who regularly attended sporting events as spectators (OR 1.83), and among respondents in the older age group who regularly played computer or video games (OR 2.11 for women and 1.61 for men). A lower OR for binge drinking was found for men who regularly participated in religious services in both age-groups. Lower prevalence of binge drinking among women was only found in the younger group among those who regularly participated in sports/athletics or other training (OR 0.51). Our findings suggest that prevention strategies could benefit from an everyday life approach, but also that different interventions should be used in relation to specific leisure activities.

  • Rho and Rho Kinase are involved in the signal transduction cascade caused by propofol
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background: Propofol is known to interact with the γ-aminobutyric acidA (GABAA) receptor, however, activating the receptor alone is not sufficient for producing anaesthesia. Propofol tyresine phosphorylates the GABAA receptor and reorganises the actin cytoskeleton, eausing ring structures and rnembrane ruffles. Propofol, but not GABA, the endogenous tigand for the GABAA receptor, tyresine phosphorylates actin, both in the membrane and cytoskeletal fractions of the neuron.Aim: How does propofol cause the actin reorganisation and is this a specific effect of propofol? Is the small membrane associated G-protein rho involved in the signal cascade towards the actin reorganisation? Methods: Westem blotting (WB) was used to visualize tyresine phosphorylated immunoprecipitated proteins and changes in actin between the different cellularcompartments after inhibition with rho (C3 exotoxin) and rho kinase (ROK) (HA-1077) inhibitors. Fluoreseenee mireoscopy after rhodamine-phalloidin labelling of actin was used to calculate the number of actin ring structures caused by propofol or GABA, in same experiments combined with pre-incubation with C3 exotoxin, HA- 1077 or the tyrosine kinase inhibitor Herbimycin A. Propofol-stimulated cells were studied with confocal microscopy. Results: Propofol eaused an increased tyresine phosphorylation, that was reduced by C3 exotoxin, of a 160 kDa protein after two minutes stimulation. The 160 kDa protein is still unidentified. The actin ring structures caused by propofol was shown with confocal microscopy to go almost through the entire cell. The amount of rings were reduced by C3 exatoxin as well as HA-1077. Furthermore, w hen a tyrosine kinase bioeker was used no ring structures were formed. However, GABA did not produce any ring structures. When the actin content of the cellular campartments were analysed, C3 exatoxin treated cells showed an increased amount of actin in the cytoskeletal fraction, simultaneausly with a decrease in both the membrane and the cytosol fractions. The ROK bioeker on ly eaused a reduction of actin in the cytosol/membrane fractions, but no increase was observed in the cytoskeleton. Conclusion: Propofol, but not GABA, eauses actin ring structures in neurons. Propofol uses the rho and rho kinase pathway to reorganize the actin cytoskeleton into ring structures, which is also dependent on a tyresine klnase. Propofol also eauses an unidentified rho dependent 160 kDa protein to be tyresine phosphorylated. The activation eaused by propofol of rho and rho kinase causes actin to be moved from the cytoskeleton to the cell membrane and cytosol. This reorganisation of actin might influence the GABAA receptor by keeping it open, thus allowing the cell to be hyperpolarized for longer time, and consequently maintain anaesthesia.

  • Glycerol kinase deficiency in two brothers with and without clinical manifestations.
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Clinical genetics. - 0009-9163 .- 1399-0004. ; 50:5, s. 375-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report two brothers with glycerol kinase deficiency (GKD). The older brother had serious clinical symptoms, mental and growth retardation, abnormal skeleton, spontaneous fractures and premature loss of abnormal teeth. He and his mother had low serum phosphate levels. He had elevated serum and urine glycerol levels and GKD was found in cultured fibroblasts. Prenatal diagnosis was performed in the second pregnancy. Glycerol kinase activity was considered normal in a chorionic villus sample of the foetus. After birth, it was found that the boy had elevated serum and urine glycerol levels. Enzymatic analysis in cultured fibroblasts revealed that this boy also had GKD, in spite of having no expression of the disease. Chromosomal analyses in the parents and both boys were normal. Major rearrangements or deletions were not detected in molecular studies of DNA from the two brothers. The hybridisation pattern was normal and no allelic loss was observed.

  • Interference of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation with permanent ventricular stimulation: a new clinical problem?
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Europace. - 1532-2092. ; 11:3, s. 364-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIMS: To assess the compatibility of thoracic TENS and permanent PM treatment and to identify any signs of interference of TENS with the PM function. METHODS AND RESULTS: Twenty-seven patients treated with PM were tested. Transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation electrodes were placed above each mamilla, and the stimulation intensity was increased to the maximum level tolerated for 30 s or until electrocardiogram revealed signs of interference. Transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation of 2 and 80 Hz was tested with the PM ventricular sensing level set to the clinically chosen level as well as to maximal sensitivity. Interference was detected in 22 of 27 patients (81%). Low-frequency (2 Hz) stimulation was more associated with PM interference (52% at normal vs. 81% at maximal ventricular sensitivity) than high-frequency (80 Hz) stimulation (33% at normal vs. 63% at maximal ventricular sensitivity); although the differences were not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation frequently induces inhibition of the PM function already at the clinically set ventricular sensitivity. Therefore, individual testing is warranted before TENS treatment is considered in patients with a PM. A test protocol for TENS and PM interaction is proposed.

  • Peritoneal infection after colorectal cancer surgery induces substantial alterations in postoperative protein levels : an exploratory study
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Purpose: Peritoneal infection, due to anastomotic leakage, after resection for colorectal cancer have been shown to associate with increased cancer recurrence and mortality, as well as cardiovascsular morbidity. Alterations in circulating protein levels could help shed light on the underlying mechanisms, prompting this exploratory study of 64 patients operated for colorectal cancer with anastomosis.Methods: Thirty-two cases who suffered a postoperative peritoneal infection were matched with 32 controls who had a complication-free postoperative stay. Proteins in serum samples at their first postoperative visit and at one year after surgery were analysed using proximity extension assays and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Multivariate projection methods, adjusted for multiple testing, were used to compare levels between groups, and enrichment and network analyses were performed.Results: Seventy-seven proteins, out of 270 tested, were differentially expressed at a median sampling time of 41 days after surgery. Many of the differentially expressed top hub proteins have known involvement in cancer progression, survival, invasiveness and metastasis. Over-represented pathways were related to cardiomyopathy, cell-adhesion, extracellular matrix, phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase/Akt (PI3K/Akt) and transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) signaling. Conclusion: These affected proteins and pathways could provide clues as to why these patients might suffer increased cancer recurrence, mortality and cardiovascular morbidity.

  • Changes in Medication Preceding Out-of-hospital Cardiac Arrest Where Resuscitation Was Attempted
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology. - : Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. - 0160-2446 .- 1533-4023. ; 63:6, s. 497-503
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To describe recent changes in medication preceding out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) where resuscitation was attempted. Methods: OHCA victims were identified by the Swedish Cardiac Arrest Register and linked by means of their unique 10-digit personal identification numbers to the Prescribed Drug Register. We identified new claimed prescriptions during a 6-month period before the OHCA compared with those claimed in the period 12 to 18 months before. The 7-digit Anatomical Therapeutical Chemical codes of individual drugs were used. The study period was November 2007-January 2011. Results: OHCA victims with drugs were (1) older than those who did not claim any drugs in any period (70 +/- 16 years vs. 54 +/- 22 years, P < 0.001), (2) more often women (34% vs. 20%, P < 0.001), and (3) had more often a presumed cardiac etiology (67% vs. 54%, P < 0.001). The OHCA victims were less likely to have ventricular tachycardia/ventricular fibrillation as the first recorded ;rhythm (26% vs. 33%, P < 0.001) or to survive 1 month (9% vs. 17%, P < 0.0001). New prescriptions were claimed by 5122 (71%) of 7243 OHCA victims. The most frequently claimed new drugs were paracetamol (acetaminophen) 10.3%, furosemide 7.8%, and omeprazole 7.6%. Of drugs known or supposed to cause QT prolongation, ciprofloxacin was the most frequent (3.4%) altogether; 16% had a new claimed prescription of a drug included in the "qtdrugs.org" lists. Conclusions: Most OHCA victims had new drugs prescribed within 6 months before the event but most often intended for diseases other than cardiac. No claims can be made as to the causality.
