  • Long term trends of fish after liming of Swedish streams and lakes

    • Thousands of Swedish acidified lakes and streams have been regularly limed for about 30 years. Standard sampling of fish assemblages in lakes and streams was an important part of monitoring the trends after liming, i.e. sampling with multi-mesh gillnets in lakes (EN 14757) and electrofishing in streams (EN 14011). Monitoring data are nationally managed, in the National Register of Survey test-fishing and the Swedish Electrofishing Register. We evaluated long-term data from 1029 electrofishing sites in limed streams and gillnet sampling in 750 limed lakes, along with reference data from 195 stream sites and 101 lakes with no upstream liming in their catchments. The median year of first liming was 1986 for both streams and lakes. The proportion of limed stream sites with no fish clearly decreased with time, mean species richness and proportion of sites with brown trout (Salmo trutta) recruits increased. There were no consistent trends in fish occurrence or species richness at non-limed sites, but occurrence of brown trout recruits also increased in acid as well as neutral reference streams. Abundance of brown trout, perch (Perca fluviatilis) and roach (Rutilus rutilus) increased significantly more at limed sites than at non-limed reference sites sampled before and after 1986. The mean species richness did not change consistently in limed lakes, but decreased in low alkalinity reference lakes, and fish abundance decreased significantly in limed as well as in non-limed lakes.

  • Exploring the sensitivity of extreme event attribution of two recent extreme weather events in Sweden using long-running meteorological observations

    • Despite a growing interest in extreme event attribution, attributing individual weather events remains difficult and uncertain. We have explored extreme event attribution by comparing the method for probabilistic extreme event attribution employed at World Weather Attribution (https://www.worldweatherattribution.org, last access: 22 August 2024) (WWA method) to an approach solely using pre-industrial and current observations (PI method), utilising the extensive and long-running network of meteorological observations available in Sweden. With the long observational records, the PI method is used to calculate the change in probability for two recent extreme events in Sweden without relying on the correlation to the global mean surface temperature (GMST). Our results indicate that the two methods generally agree for an event based on daily maximum temperatures. However, the WWA method results in a weaker indication of attribution compared to the PI method, for which 12 out of 15 stations indicate a stronger attribution than found by the WWA method. On the other hand, for a recent extreme precipitation event, the WWA method results in a stronger indication of attribution compared to the PI method. For this event, only 2 out of 10 stations assessed in the PI method exhibited results similar to the WWA method. Based on the results, we conclude that at least one out of every two of heat waves similar to the summer of 2018 can be attributed to climate change. For the extreme precipitation event in Gävle in 2021, the large variations within and between the two methods make it difficult to draw any conclusions regarding the attribution of the event.

    • The published database RivFishTIME (Comte et al. 2021, Global Ecology and Biogeography, doi: 10.1111/geb.13210) includes a large section of time-series data on fish abundance in Swedish rivers from the Swedish Electrofishing RegiSter, SERS. Knowledge about the limitations of the source data are important when extracting and analyzing data and with this brief note we provide some details that may be helpful for interpreting the Swedish time-series. The note highlights the importance of linking vital metadata to extracted focal data when constructing new databases, especially concerning time series data from monitoring programs conducted in non-randomly selected sites with human environmental impacts. Many of the SERS data come from rivers that have been affected by human impact, e.g. liming to mitigate environmental acidification and hydropower dams, since before monitoring was initiated. Data in SERS are also biased towards shallow salmonid habitats, due to the configuration of Swedish monitoring programs. Hence, data from many rivers are not representative of their fish biodiversity in general. This information is vital for appropriate interpretation of fish biodiversity trends. For RivFishTIME analyses considerations are important since Swedish data constitutes a large proportion of the database. We also provide background information about SERS and references to other Swedish databases containing complementary information. Finally, we provide contact information of the SERS database  curators, who can assist prospective analysts with data extraction from SERS.
