  • An integrated system for energy-efficient exhaust aftertreatment for heavy-duty vehicles
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Renewable Energy in the Service of Mankind. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 9783319177779 - 9783319177762 ; 1, s. 133-143

    • © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015. This chapter presents a unique system approach applied in a joint academic- industrial research programme, E4 Mistra, to attain the goals of high energy efficiency and low emissions in an exhaust aftertreatment system for heavy-duty vehicles. The high energy efficiency is achieved by heat recuperation, onboard hydrogen production for NOx reduction, and by finding new solutions for making the aftertreatment system active at low exhaust temperatures. To reach low particulate emissions, a mechanical filter using a sintered metal powder is developed and coated with catalytic material to improve the soot oxidation efficiency. Low NOx emissions are achieved by an efficient NOx reduction catalyst. The integrated E4 Mistra system comprises four technological advances: thermoelectric (TE) materials for heat recuperation, catalytic reduction of NOx over innovative catalyst substrates using either the onboard diesel or biodiesel, H2 from a high-efficiency fuel reformer, and particulate filtration over a porous metal filter. The TE materials are used in a TE generator (TEG) which converts thermal energy into electricity. The TEG is used to recuperate heat from the exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) circuit of heavy-duty trucks and is expected to generate ~1 kW electric power from 20 kW heat in the exhaust gas. The TEG is integrated in a plate heat exchanger (HEX) designed particularly for this application. Apart from the knowledge and experiences in TEG and heat exchange technologies, a thorough fluid dynamics and TE analysis are performed in this project to understand the governing processes and optimize the system accordingly. The components of the E4 Mistra system are explained in the chapter in addition to test results, which show the system's capacity for H2 production, NOx conversion, particulate matter filtration and soot oxidation, and finally electric power generation via heat recuperation from the exhaust gas using the developed TEG-HEX system.

  • Varför brister politikerna när det gäller miljömålen?
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Dagens Nyheter. - 1101-2447.

  • Incidence of and risk factors for neonatal morbidity after active perinatal care : extremely preterm infants study in Sweden (EXPRESS)
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Acta Paediatrica. - : Wiley. - 0803-5253 .- 1651-2227. ; 99:7, s. 978-992
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims: The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of neonatal morbidity in extremely preterm infants and to identify associated risk factors. Methods: Population based study of infants born before 27 gestational weeks and admitted for neonatal intensive care in Sweden during 2004-2007. Results: Of 638 admitted infants, 141 died. Among these, life support was withdrawn in 55 infants because of anticipation of poor long-term outcome. Of 497 surviving infants, 10% developed severe intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH), 5.7% cystic periventricular leucomalacia (cPVL), 41% septicaemia and 5.8% necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC); 61% had patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) and 34% developed retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) stage >= 3. Eighty-five per cent needed mechanical ventilation and 25% developed severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Forty-seven per cent survived to one year of age without any severe IVH, cPVL, severe ROP, severe BPD or NEC. Tocolysis increased and prolonged mechanical ventilation decreased the chances of survival without these morbidities. Maternal smoking and higher gestational duration were associated with lower risk of severe ROP, whereas PDA and poor growth increased this risk. Conclusion: Half of the infants surviving extremely preterm birth suffered from severe neonatal morbidities. Studies on how to reduce these morbidities and on the long-term health of survivors are warranted.

  • Analysis of initial rhythm, witnessed status and delay to treatment among survivors of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in Sweden.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Heart. - : BMJ Group. - 1355-6037 .- 1468-201X. ; 96:22, s. 1826-1830
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract Background The characteristics of patients who survive out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) are incompletely known. The characteristics of survivors of OHCA during a period of 16 years in Sweden are described. Methods All the patients included in the Swedish Cardiac Arrest Registry between 1992 and 2007 in whom cardiopulmonary resuscitation was attempted and who were alive after 1 month were included in the survey. Results In all, 2432 survivors were registered. Information on initial rhythm at their first ECG recording was missing in 11%. Of the remaining 2165 survivors, 80% had a shockable rhythm and 20% had a non-shockable rhythm. Only a minority with a shockable rhythm among the bystander-witnessed cases were defibrillated within 5 min after cardiac arrest. This proportion did not change during the entry period. Among survivors found in a non-shockable rhythm, the majority were bystander-witnessed cases and a few had a delay from cardiac arrest to ambulance arrival of <5 min. Of all survivors, more women (27%) than men (18%) were found in a non-shockable rhythm (p<0.0001). During the 16 years in which the register was used for this study, the proportion of survivors found in a shockable rhythm did not change significantly. The cerebral performance categories score indicated better cerebral function among patients found in a shockable rhythm than in those found in a non-shockable rhythm. Conclusion Among survivors of OHCA, a substantial proportion was found in a non-shockable rhythm and this occurred more frequently in women than in men. The proportion of survivors found in a shockable rhythm has not changed markedly over time. Survivors found in a shockable rhythm had a better cerebral performance than survivors found in a non-shockable rhythm. The proportion of survivors who were bystander-witnessed and found in a shockable rhythm and defibrillated early is still remarkably low.

  • Ice Storm Modelling in Transmission System Reliability Calculations
  • 2007
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this thesis a new technique of modelling non-dimensioning severe weather for power system reliability calculations is developed. The model is suitable for both transmission and distribution networks and is based on geographically moving winds and ice storms. The modelled weather has severity levels that vary with time and change continuously as the weather passes a region. Different weather situations are represented with scenarios. For each scenario the weather parameters, such as size, strength, speed and direction can vary. A stochastic method for choosing parameters is also described. This method is based on probabilities for different weather situations for Swedish conditions. A stochastic vulnerability model for the components is required for each scenario to connect the risk of failure to the weather situation. The model developed here connects the direct wind impact with the impact from the ice storm which is given by an ice accretion model. It is assumed that the probability for an individual segment to break down due to the impact of a given weather depends on load functions for wind and ice together with the vulnerability model for components. It is possible to estimate the outage risk as well as the time difference between mean times to failure in different lines. Monte Carlo methods, where many scenarios are simulated, are used in the case studies. Studies of the system vulnerability is a future work of this project but in one small case study the probability for outage in a load point is estimated. To be able to estimate repair times after a severe weather the reliability calculations are extended with a restoration model which gives distributions of down times for the broken components. The situations after the ice storm that are studied are so severe that gathering of all or almost all possible restoration resources is required to restore the system. Restoration times for different components are not assumed to be independent; on the other hand they are assumed to be strongly correlated. The restoration process is dependent on staff situation, distance between location of spare parts and the breakdown, forecasts, availability of roads and distance to other breakdowns; this is included in the model. A method for simulation of non-Gaussian correlated random numbers is developed to include the correlations during the restoration process. The case studies show the impact of the different weather situations on the components and the following restoration times for the broken components.

  • Complement Gene Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms and Biomarker Endophenotypes of Alzheimer's Disease
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. - 1387-2877. ; 35:1, s. 51-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The complement system has been implicated in both physiological synapse elimination and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here, we investigated associations between four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in complement genes and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers for AD in 452 neurochemically or neuropathologically verified AD cases and 678 cognitively normal controls. None of the SNPs associated with risk of AD but there were potential associations of rs9332739 in the C2 gene and rs4151667 in the complement factor B gene with CSF tau levels (p = 0.023) and Mini-Mental State Examination scores (p = 0.012), both of which may be considered markers of disease intensity/severity.
