  • Preschool children’s discernment of different forms of numbers
  • 2018
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to describe in what way preschool activities contribute to the development of children's knowledge of different forms of numbers; symbols, ordinal and cardinal. Video -recordings from three different groups of preschool children age d 3 to 5 years old have been analyzed based on variation theory (Marton, 2015) to describe the children’s discernment of numbers. The activities were planned and enacted by preschool teachers. The teachers’ intentions were to teach the children numerosity (Hannula - Sormunen et.al., 2016). The activities offered learning possibilities during the activities, e.g. to sort digits by magnitude, value or just to match symbols. The video -recordings were analyzed to capture what as- pects of the numbers the children were offered to discern, and what aspects were not offered to discern during the different activities. Simultaneous discernment of numbers in different forms are important for children’s future mathematical performance (Hannul- Sormunen et.al., 2015). The fi ndings unveil the teachers’ challenges to design preschool activities offering children simultaneously discernment of num- bers’ different forms. The activities mainly make the children discern numbers as symbols to match or as magnitude, while the cardinal form occurred only to a limited extent.

  • Preschool Children’s Learning Opportunities Using Natural Numbers in Number Row Activities
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Early Childhood Education Journal. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1082-3301 .- 1573-1707. ; 49, s. 1199-1213
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study analysed how preschool teachers differently enacted the same mathematical activity for preschool children to discern numbers, and how thisaffected the children’s learning opportunities during the activity. The analysis was based on variation theory and Chi’s taxonomy of learning activities. Two Swedish preschool teachers’ enactment of the same mathematical activity for 27 children aged 4–6years was studied. Video recordings of what the children were offered to discern were used in the analysis. The results indicate that variations in how the teachers chose to enact the activity produced two different learning opportunities for the children. Differences in what aspects were made discernible were closely linked to the characteristics of the activity implemented. The enactments differed even if the same game was chosen and the sameamount of time was used in the play-based activity. In one preschool group, there were few opportunities to discern more than the nominal form of numbers; the other preschool group had an activity focused on all number forms simultaneously. In addition, in the latter group, the children had the opportunity to develop equinumerosity. The results suggest that the activity with limited variation was more appropriate for learning with undeveloped knowledge; the children with more developed understanding required a more varied design. This study contributes to the knowledge of how the design of an activity affects children’s learning differently, which is important when planning learning-based preschool activities. © 2020, The Author(s).

  • Young adults looking back at their experiences of treatment and care for nonsuicidal self-injury during adolescence: a qualitative study
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Mental Health. - : BMC. - 1753-2000. ; 18:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundNonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is associated with stigma, and negative attitudes among healthcare professionals toward NSSI have been reported. A person-centered approach that focuses on how individuals with lived experience of NSSI perceive the treatment and care they receive is invaluable in reducing barriers to help-seeking and improving treatment and mental healthcare services. The aim of the current qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of young adults when they look back upon their experiences of psychiatric treatment for NSSI during adolescence.MethodsTwenty-six individuals with lived experience of NSSI who were in contact with child and adolescent psychiatry during adolescence were interviewed. The interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis.ResultsThree main themes were developed: Changed perceptions in retrospect, The importance of a collaborative conceptualization and Lasting impression of the relationship. Participants' perception of themselves as well as the treatment changed over time. The importance of a joint understanding of NSSI and an agreed-upon treatment focus was emphasized. The relationship to the mental health professionals, and experiences of how NSSI was communicated, were salient several years later.ConclusionsHealthcare professionals need to communicate about NSSI in a respectful manner and include the perspective of the adolescent with lived experience of NSSI in a joint conceptualization of NSSI and treatment focus.

  • Disease-specific Hospitalizations among 5-Year Survivors of Hepatoblastoma : A Nordic Population-based Cohort Study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. - 1077-4114. ; 41:3, s. 181-186
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: The long-term risk of somatic disease in hepatoblastoma survivors has not been thoroughly evaluated in previous studies. In this population-based study of 86 five-year HB survivors, we used inpatient registers to evaluate the risk for a range of somatic diseases. Methods: In total, 86 five-year survivors of hepatoblastoma were identified in the Nordic cancer registries from 1964 to 2008 and 152,231 population comparisons were selected. Study subjects were followed in national hospital registries for somatic disease classified into 12 main diagnostic groups. Standardized hospitalization rate ratios (RRs) and absolute excess risks were calculated. Results: After a median follow-up of 11 years, 35 of the 86 five-year hepatoblastoma survivors had been hospitalized with a total of 69 hospitalizations, resulting in an RR of 2.7 (95% confidence interval [CI], 2.2-3.5) and an overall absolute excess risk of 4.2 per 100 person-years. Highest risk was seen for benign neoplasms (RR=16) with 6 hospitalizations for benign neoplasms in the colon and one in rectum. Conclusions: The pattern of hospitalizations found in this first comprehensive follow-up of hepatoblastoma survivors seems reassuring. Less than 50% of the 5-year survivors had been hospitalized and often for diseases that were not severe or life-threatening.

  • Liver diseases in Adult Life after Childhood Cancer in Scandinavia (ALiCCS) : A population-based cohort study of 32,839 one-year survivors
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Cancer. - : Wiley. - 0020-7136. ; 142:4, s. 702-708
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Information on late onset liver complications after childhood cancer is scarce. To ensure an appropriate follow-up of childhood cancer survivors and reducing late liver complications, the need for comprehensive and accurate information is presented. We evaluate the risk of liver diseases in a large childhood cancer survivor cohort. We included all 1-year survivors of childhood cancer treated in the five Nordic countries. A Cox proportional hazards model was used to estimate hospitalisation rate (hazard) ratios (HRs) for each liver outcome according to type of cancer. We used the risk among survivors of central nervous system tumour as internal reference. With a median follow-up time of 10 years, 659 (2%) survivors had been hospitalised at least once for a liver disease. The risk for hospitalisation for any liver disease was high after hepatic tumour (HR = 6.9) and leukaemia (HR = 1.7). The Danish sub-cohort of leukaemia treated with haematopoietic stem cell transplantation had a substantially higher risk for hospitalisation for all liver diseases combined (HR = 3.8). Viral hepatitis accounted for 286 of 659 hospitalisations corresponding to 43% of all survivors hospitalised for liver disease. The 20-year cumulative risk of viral hepatitis was 1.8% for survivors diagnosed with cancer before 1990 but only 0.3% for those diagnosed after 1990. The risk of liver disease was low but significantly increased among survivors of hepatic tumours and leukaemia. Further studies with focus on the different treatment modalities are needed to further strengthen the prevention of treatment-induced late liver complications.

  • Long-term risk of renal and urinary tract diseases in childhood cancer survivors : A population-based cohort study
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Cancer. - : Elsevier BV. - 0959-8049. ; 64, s. 52-61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Childhood cancer has been associated with long-term risk of urinary tract diseases, but risk patterns remain to be comprehensively investigated. We analysed the lifetime risk of urinary tract diseases in survivors of childhood cancer in the Nordic countries. Methods We identified 32,519 one-year survivors of childhood cancer diagnosed since the 1940s and 1950s in the five Nordic cancer registries and selected 211,156 population comparisons of a corresponding age, sex, and country of residence from the national population registries. To obtain information on all first-time hospitalizations for a urinary tract disease, we linked all study subjects to the national hospital registry of each country. Relative risks (RRs) and absolute excess risks (AERs) and associated 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for urinary tract diseases among cancer survivors were calculated with the appropriate morbidity rates among comparisons as reference. Results We observed 1645 childhood cancer survivors ever hospitalized for urinary tract disease yielding an RR of 2.5 (95% CI 2.4-2.7) and an AER of 229 (95% CI 210-248) per 100,000 person-years. The cumulative risk at age 60 was 22% in cancer survivors and 10% in comparisons. Infections of the urinary system and chronic kidney disease showed the highest excess risks, whereas survivors of neuroblastoma, hepatic and renal tumours experienced the highest RRs. Conclusion Survivors of childhood cancer had an excess risk of urinary tract diseases and for most diseases the risk remained elevated throughout life. The highest risks occurred following therapy of childhood abdominal tumours.

  • Discourse intervention strategies in Alzheimer's disease : eye-tracking and the effect of visual cues in conversation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Dementia & Neuropsychologia. - 1980-5764. ; 8:3, s. 278-284
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to investigate whether on-topic visual cues can serve as aids for the maintenance of discourse coherence and informativeness in autobiographical narratives of persons with Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: The experiment consisted of three randomized conversation conditions: one without prompts, showing a blank computer screen; an on-topic condition, showing a picture and a sentence about the conversation; and an off-topic condition, showing a picture and a sentence which were unrelated to the conversation. Speech was recorded while visual attention was examined using eye tracking to measure how long participants looked at cues and the face of the listener. RESULTS: Results suggest that interventions using visual cues in the form of images and written information are useful to improve discourse informativeness in AD. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated the potential of using images and short written messages as means of compensating for the cognitive deficits which underlie uninformative discourse in AD. Future studies should further investigate the efficacy of language interventions based in the use of these compensation strategies for AD patients and their family members and friends.
