  • The Purpose of Romans
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study determines the purpose of Paul’s Letter to the Romans, a purpose that does justice to the content and the flow of argument as well as to the syntactic structure of the letter text. The overall approach is to conduct a particularly close reading and detailed analysis of the introductory and concluding parts of Romans. Based on these analyses and a reconstruction of the historical and social context, a preliminary thesis of the letter purpose will be formulated. The thesis will then be tested and assessed to determine if it is reasonable against the flow of argument and the line of thought in the letter body at large. The detailed analyses of the introductory and concluding parts will be performed in two steps for each part. First, a close reading and detailed analyses to understand the textual arrangement and the content in each part. Second, a study of what observations can be perceived from the content and flow of argument that provide information about the purpose. The thesis is then tested and assessed against the content and flow of argument in the letter body at large, and what can be noted that are in line with the thesis, what arguments run against the thesis, and what additional observations have a direct impact on the thesis. The conclusion is that Paul writes the Letter to the Romans as an apostle of God and Jesus Christ to proclaim the good news among all the nations. The good news is for all people, both Jews and gentiles. The good news both includes doctrinal statements and requires an ethical response from the believers in Christ. The previous work in the East is coming to an end. Paul wishes to work with the addressees in Rome in his coming mission to the West, a work that first begins in Rome and the area around, and eventually leads all the way to Spain. Paul in a way begins his future apostolic work in Rome by sending the letter, which will continue when he comes in person to the capital of the Roman Empire.

  • The Spirit in Paul and John : A Comparative Analysis
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study compares occurrences of the Spirit of God in Pauline and Johannine texts on a lexical, grammatical, and conceptual level. The following questions are asked: What are the common traits associated with the Spirit? What is the unique profile of each corpus? Can one corpus help us better understand the other? This objective is pursued by first considering similarities and differences at the lexical and grammatical levels and then by identifying important ideas connected with the Spirit. It is clear that both Paul and John connect the Spirit with God, Jesus, and believers in a salvation-historical framework. The analysis of the conceptual level is divided into two major themes. The first theme is Christ and the coming of the Spirit. In both corpora the Spirit’s coming is shown to be the result of Christ’s redemptive work, his death and resurrection. The second theme revolves around different ways in which the Spirit impacts the life of believers. One example examined is the Spirit’s role in believers becoming children of God. Paul uses the idea of “adoption” while John uses the idea of being “begotten.” While being two different models, they still both refer to believers as becoming children of God through the work of the Spirit. Likewise, how the Spirit enables good moral conduct and how the Spirit communicates knowledge of God are ideas clearly found in both corpora, even if different models are used to develop these ideas. The comparative approach has proven helpful for our understanding of both Paul and John. Placing these texts side by side has brought out certain things in common, but has also sharpened the unique profile of each corpus. Similarities and common traits are significant and at times may even help us to better understand individual texts in each corpus. At the same time, differences between the texts are also important, and they testify to the unique contribution of each corpus to early Christian thinking about the Spirit. We may conclude that both similarities and differences between Paul and John have proven relevant for interpreting the one corpus in light of the other.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Baptism and Death : A Study of Mark and Romans
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Does baptism in some way associate an initiate with the death and resurrection of Christ? From the fourth century until the present, this understanding has had a central place in defining the meaning of baptism. In the NT, baptism and death are associated in two ways. In Rom 6:3–4, Paul argues that being baptised into Christ entails being baptised into Christ’s death. In Mark 10:38–39, Jesus uses the notion of being baptised with a baptism as a metaphor for his suffering and death. Although these ways of associating baptism and death are different, scholars have offered varying explanations for the ideas expressed in Mark and Romans and for their possible relationship to each other. The purpose of the thesis is to examine the presentation of, and the relationship between, baptism and death in Mark and Romans, and to compare the associations of baptism and death in the two texts. As a theoretical point of departure, an overarching holistic and inner-textual approach is adopted. Additional approaches are used for the respective texts: a narrative approach for Mark and an argumentative approach for Romans. In each of the analyses of Mark and Romans, the macrostructures of the texts form a framework for interpreting key passages for understanding the relationship between baptism and death. The results of these analyses are then brought together in a comparative analysis, where similarities and differences between Mark and Romans are weighed. The analysis shows that the ways of associating of baptism and death in Mark 10:38–39 and Rom 6:3–4 are different. Nonetheless, the associations are part of similar contexts, where baptism seems to have a function of helping to establish, or confirm, an identity based on, and modelled by, the crucified Christ, and that call for action in some way. A point of contact should therefore not be sought on the basis of the associations of baptism and death in Mark 10:38–39 and Rom 6:3–4, but in the broad ways the texts reflect on the significance of Christ’s death for those who want to follow Jesus or to be “in Christ”.
