- Ett av målen med artikeln är att belysa syntolkningsprocessen i termer av kommunikation mellan den seende syntolken och den synsvage/blinde brukaren: hur syntolken förmedlar det som syns och hur det tas emot av den synsvaga publiken. Ett annat mål är att lyfta fram kognitiva aspekter av syntolkningsprocessen: hur vi uppmärksammar, bearbetar, förstår och kopplar samman information som andra förmedlar. Både de kommunikativa och de kognitiva aspekterna spelar en viktig roll för förståelsen och inlevelsen.

- In face-to-face conversation, participants often give the floor, or the voice, to non-present participants - virtual participants. These are made present in the conversation by actual speakers quoting them, voicing them or referring to their opinions. In this paper, we examine instances of such virtual talk. Data are drawn from focus group discussions and public meetings about genetically modified food. Our analyses demonstrate some of the dynamics inherent in the interaction between the speaker, the present participants and one or more virtual participants. We focus on the specific functions of virtual talk, suggesting that it is a communicative resource that can be used to solve a number of different communicative tasks.

- This chapter describes the successful development of a new methodology for studying on-line writing. The text-logging tool ScriptLog has been combined with the eyetracking technology iView X HED HT, in order to enhance the study of the interplay between writing, monitoring and revision. Data on the distribution of visual attention during writing help determining to what extent pauses are used for monitoring. The complexity of the experimental settings, and the expertise needed for interpreting the eye-tracking data make this a method suitable mainly for laboratory settings. The chapter also introduces an analysis tool that merges data from ScriptLog and iView and thus helps the researcher to organise and analyse the vast amount of data produced.

- This article introduces a new methodology for deriving the dynamics of visual segmentation in relation to the underlying cognitive processes involved. The method combines social semiotics approaches to visual segmentation with eye-tracking studies on authentic image viewing and simultaneous image description. The authors' thesis is that visual segmentation suggested by the social semiotic approach is traceable in the behaviour of the viewers who perceive images while creating meaning. From this perspective, visual zooming is seen as both perceptually, cognitively, grammatically and analytically relevant. The interdisciplinary approach developed in the article presents new perspectives on the ways images are segmented and interpreted.

Revealing user behaviour on the world-wide web

- This paper presents the results of a qualitative study of user behaviour on the World-Wide Web. Eight participants were filmed whilst performing user-defined tasks and then asked to review the video-taped session during prompted recall. This data forms the basis for a series of descriptions of user behaviour and the postulation of a number of underlying cognitive mechanisms. Our results indicate that people: lack ready made search strategies, prefer alternatives that are visible, immediately available and familiar, choose the path of least resistance, exhibit social forms of behaviour, engage in parallel activities, object to misleadingly presented information, have trouble orienting, are late in using appropriate strategies, are sensitive to matters of time, and are emotionally involved in the activity. The paper ends with a discussion of how these results can contribute to our understanding of hypermedia.
