  • Effect of exercise augmentation of cognitive behavioural therapy for the treatment of suicidal ideation and depression
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Affective Disorders. - : Elsevier BV. - 0165-0327 .- 1573-2517. ; 219, s. 58-63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Suicidal ideation and depression are prevalent and costly conditions that reduce quality of life. This study was designed to determine the efficacy of exercise as an adjunct to cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for suicidal ideation and depression among depressed individuals. Methods: In a randomized clinical trial, 54 mildly to moderately depressed patients (54% female, mean age=48.25) were assigned to a combined CBT and exercise group or to a CBT only group. Both groups received one weekly session of therapy for 12 weeks, while the combined group also completed exercise three times weekly over the same period. Self-reported suicidal ideation, depression, and activities of daily living were measured at the beginning and the end of treatment. Results: Multilevel modelling revealed greater improvements in suicidal ideation, depression, and activities of daily living in the combined CBT and exercise group, compared to the CBT only group.Limitations: No follow-up data were collected, so the long-term effects (i.e., maintenance of gains) is unclear. Conclusions: The findings revealed that exercise adjunct to CBT effectively decreases both depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation in mildly to moderately depressed individuals.

  • Self-Concealment Mediates the Relationship Between Perfectionism and Attitudes Toward Seeking Psychological Help Among Adolescents
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Psychological Reports. - : SAGE Publications. - 0033-2941 .- 1558-691X. ; 120:6, s. 1019-1036
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the biggest barriers in treating adolescents with mental health problems is their refusing to seek psychological help. This study was designed to examine the relationships between two forms of perfectionism, self-concealment and attitudes toward seeking psychological help and to test the mediating role of self-concealment in the relationship between perfectionism and attitudes toward seeking psychological help among Malaysian high school students. The participants were 475 Malaysian high school students from four high schools in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Structural equation modelling results indicated that high school students with high levels of socially prescribed perfectionism, high levels of self-concealment, and low levels of self-oriented perfectionism reported negative attitudes toward seeking psychological help. Bootstrapping analysis showed that self-concealment emerged as a significant, full mediator in the link between socially prescribed perfectionism and attitudes toward seeking psychological help. Moderated mediation analysis also examined whether the results generalized across men and women. The results revealed that male students with socially prescribed perfectionism are more likely to engage in self-concealment, which in turn, leads to negative attitudes toward seeking psychological help more than their female counterparts. The results suggested that students high in socially prescribed perfectionism were more likely to engage in self-concealment and be less inclined to seek psychological help.

  • The Moderating Effect of Hardiness on the Relationships between Problem-Solving Skills and Perceived Stress with Suicidal Ideation in Nursing Students
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Studia psychologica (Bratislava). - : Central Library of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. - 0039-3320 .- 2585-8815. ; 60:1, s. 30-41
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent evidence indicates an elevated risk of suicidal ideation for undergraduate nursing students. This research was designed to enhance the understanding of suicidal ideation in nursing students by investigating the relationships between problem-solving skills, perceived stress, hardiness, and suicidal ideation, with the possibility of hardiness acting as a moderator in the relationships between problem-solving skills appraisal and perceived stress with suicidal ideation. A multi-stage cluster random sample of Malaysian nursing undergraduate students (N = 204) completed self-report questionnaires. The results of structural equation modeling revealed that poor problem-solving skills, greater levels of perceived stress, and low levels of hardiness predicted greater levels of suicidal ideation. Also, hardiness emerged as a moderator in the links between problem-solving skills appraisal and perceived stress with suicidal ideation. The findings incrementally improve our understanding about the importance of hardiness as a moderator in explaining how problem-solving skills and perceived stress affect suicidal ideation. The results of this study are obtained from Malaysian nursing students and possible generalization to other populations should be verified by further studies.

  • Neurofeedback Rehabilitation Reduces Anxiety in Methamphetamine Abusers
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Neuroregulation. - : International Society for Neurofeedback Research (ISNR). - 2373-0587. ; 8:3, s. 128-136
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Addictive disorders are characterized by cognitive, behavioral, and neurological impairments caused by dysregulations of brain structure that can extend well beyond early withdrawal in the months and years of recovery. The present study aimed to examine the efficacy of neurofeedback rehabilitation on anxiety in methamphetamine abusers. The sample consisted of 14 male methamphetamine drug addicts who were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 7) and a control group (n = 7). Participants were assessed for Axis I disorders (SCID) and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). Mixed repeated ANOVA, independent t-tests, and chi-square were used for data analysis. The experimental group received 18 sessions of neurofeedback rehabilitation and standard psychological interventions treatment as usual, while the control group received only standard interventions. Results showed that neurofeedback significantly reduced anxiety in methamphetamine abusers at posttreatment and during a one-month follow-up. Along with other psychological interventions, neurofeedback rehabilitation is recommended for methamphetamine abusers.

  • Psychometric properties of persian version of escapism scale among Iranian adolescents
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: BMC psychology. - 2050-7283. ; 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the Escapism Scale among Iranian adolescents aged 14-18. Between January 2021 and August 2021, cross-sectional study was conducted using a convenience sampling method to select 566 participants (340 girls and 226 boys) to investigate the relationship between physical activity and mental health in adolescents. The participants completed several questionnaires, including the Escapism Scale, Erikson Psychosocial Stage Inventory (EPSI), Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), Hope Scale (AHS), Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version (SAS-SV), and General Self-efficacy (GSE). Construct validity, reliability using Cronbach's alpha, and concurrent validity were used to evaluate the Escapism Scale's validity and reliability. Results of the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) indicated that a two-factor model provided a good fit for the data: sbX2 = 179.99 (p < 0.01); SRMR = 0.07; RMR = 0.56, CFI = 0.91; NFI = 0.89; IFI = 0.91; NFI = 0.89; GFI = 0.93; AGFI = 0.90, RMSEA = 0.076). The Cronbach's alpha coefficient for escapism was 0.73. The study found a significant positive relationship between escapism and smartphone addiction (r = 0.19). Additionally, a significant negative relationship was observed between escapism and hope (r=-0.31), satisfaction with life (r=-0.34), and general self-efficacy (r=-0.33). Furthermore, a significant relationship was found between escapism and gender. Lastly, the study found a significant relationship between escapism and identity confusion (r = 0.164, P < 0.01) and identity coherence (P < 0.01, r = 29). In conclusion, the Escapism Scale is a valid and reliable tool for assessing escapism and psychological evaluations in Iranian adolescents. These results may inform future research and suggest re-testing in clinical populations.

  • Research Paper Effectiveness of Group Training Based on Choice Theory on Internalizing Problems, Empathy, and Identity Transformations Among Male Adolescents
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Research and Health. - 2423-5717. ; 13:3, s. 197-208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Choice theory stems from psychological concepts like self-concept, successful identity, and quality of the world. The theory encourages adolescents to accept the responsibility for their choices on the one hand and predict the effect of such decisions on their lives on the other hand. The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of choice theory-based group training in internalizing problems, empathy, and identity transformation among male adolescents. Methods: This quasi-experimental study has a pre-test-post-test and 1.5 months follow-up design with a control group. The statistical population included all male adolescents studying in Qazvin City, Iran, in the 2020-2021 academic year. The sample included 28 male adolescents selected through convenience sampling and randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups (n=14). The experimental group received 8 sessions of 90-minute group training based on choice theory, while the control group did not receive any intervention. We gathered data using the empathy scale, Achenbach system of empirically based assessment (ASEBA), and aspects of identity questionnaire. Mixed repeated analyses of variance, the independent t test, and the Chi-square test were used for data analysis in SPSS software, version 24. Results: The findings indicated that the group training based on choice theory was effective in promoting internalizing problems (F=30.61, P<0.001), empathy (F=21.35, P<0.001), and identity transformation (F=50.2, P<0.001). In addition, these effects were sustainable until the follow-up period. Conclusion: This research indicated that group training based on choice theory was effective in internalizing problems, empathy, and identity transformation among male adolescents. It is recommended that school counselors consider the principles and concepts of this intervention as an educational mission and executive task for male adolescents.

  • Validity and Reliability of Persian Version of Cyber-Bullying /Victimization Experience Questionnaire (CBVEQ) Among Iranian Adolescents
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Bullying Prevention. - 2523-3653.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aimed to measure validity and reliability of the Persian version of the Cyber-Bullying/Victimization Experience Questionnaire (CBVEQ) among Iranian adolescents. This cross-sectional validation study was conducted on Iranian adolescents between January 2022 and September 2022. Online questionnaires were completed by a total of 1439 Iranian high school students, with an age range of 14–18 years (M = 15.93 years, SD = 1.43). Participants completed Cyber-Bullying/Victimization Experience Questionnaire (CBVEQ), Online Disinhibition, Sensation Seeking, Empathy, and School Connectedness questionnaires. The validity and reliability of the CBVEQ were assessed through measures including Cronbach's alpha, construct validity via Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), and evaluations of divergent and convergent validity. The CFA indicated that a two-factor model provides a good fit for the data: (sbX2 = 3011.31 (p < 0.01); SRMR = 0.06; CFI = 0.96; NFI = 0.96; IFI = 0.96; PNFI = 0.86; GFI = 0.83; RMSEA = 0.088). Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for the self-escapism was 0.89. There was a significant positive relationship between CBVEQ with online disinhibition (r = 0.47; P < 0.01) and sensation seeking (r = 0.44; P < 0.01). The finding showed significant negative relationship between CBVEQ score with school connectedness (SC) (r = -0.35; P < 0.01), and empathy (r = -0.42; P < 0.01). In addition, the findings have shown a relationship between CBVEQ and maternal educational status. Iranian researchers and specialists can use this scale for research or assessment purposes in Iranian adolescents to expand the existing knowledge about preventing and reducing cyberbullying.
