Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density

- Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.

- The advent of the era of the smart economy has made agricultural production more intelligent. An increasing number of companies have launched a series of investment activities aimed at smart agricultural production (SAP). However, whether smart agricultural production investment (SAPI) impacts the stock market has yet to be confirmed. Therefore, based on the sample data of 118 listed companies in China from 2010 to 2019, this study empirically examines the impact of SAPI announcements on shareholder value, as indicated by abnormal returns of stocks. Further, we tested the moderating effect of certain characteristic factors on abnormal stock returns. The research results illustrate a significant positive connection between SAPI announcements and shareholder value. Moreover, considering the announcement content and company factors, this study investigates the impacts of different investment targets and industries on the market reaction to SAPI announcements. We find that non-agricultural companies have a more positive market reaction to SAPI than agricultural companies; the higher the liability-asset ratio, the more positive will be the stock market reaction to SAPI.

Green procurement or green supply? A meta-analysis of their impacts on firm sustainability performance

- Global environmental issues are becoming increasingly prominent, driving firms and supply chains to adopt green procurement and supply. While green procurement emphasises a firm's procurement function or the selection of environmentally friendly materials and green suppliers, green supply extends outside the firm, emphasising the development and cooperation of green suppliers. Based on a meta-analysis of 25,433 samples from 116 empirical studies across 30 countries, we examine the global implementation of these two green practices and their influence on firm sustainability performance on the basis of four dimensions: financial, environmental, operational, and social. In order to deploy a better knowledge of green practices worldwide, we further investigate the application of two green practices in four distinct contexts: country, industry, firm size, and ISO development. The study results provide insights for firms to develop differentiated implementation strategies for green practices and for governments to formulate differentiated green policies and regulations.

Smart logistics transformation collaboration between manufacturers and logistics service providers : A supply chain contracting perspective

- Intelligent transformation of manufacturers requires smart logistics transformation collaboration, which improves competitiveness. In this study, we construct a Stackelberg game model based on the mutual influence and restriction in the relationship between a manufacturer and a logistics service provider (LSP) undergoing smart logistics transformation. We investigate whether cost-sharing (CS) or revenue-sharing (RS) contracts can coordinate the supply chain and suggest a hybrid CS-RS contract to improve performance. We find that, compared with decentralized options, CS and RS contracts achieve a higher level of smart logistics transformation. While the coordination and effectiveness of CS contracts are superior to those of RS contracts, neither can fully coordinate the supply chain. The proposed hybrid CS-RS contract allows the manufacturer to share the LSPs costs before the transformation and its partial revenue after transformation, so that the LSP can reduce its service charge, thereby achieving full supply chain coordination. When will an overconfident entrant in the two-sided market do more good than harm?

- In business operations, a two-sided platform serves as an intermediary connecting two sets of agents in the two-sided market and new entrants are commonly seen. Due to unfamiliarity with the market, the entrant may be overconfident, i.e., overestimating consumer's utility. In addition, an entrant could bring existing consumers and their attention to the entered business service, which forms a market amplification effect. This study considers the market amplification effect and entrant's overconfidence degree, establishes game-theoretical models for analyzing the results in entry scenario and compares with the monopoly scenario. Three main findings are ob-tained. First, an overconfident entrant makes both itself and the incumbent overprice, which may explain the increased price of Ele.me and Meituan after the entry of latter. Second, the profit of the entrant is not monotonic, but rather it first increases and then decreases as the overconfidence degree increases. Third, the entrant's overconfidence benefits both the incumbent and entrant when the overconfidence degree is relatively low and the market amplification effect is relatively high. This finding explains why optimistic entrepreneurs are popular in the industry.
