  • Linear all-optical signal processing using silicon micro-ring resonators
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Frontiers of Optoelectronics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2095-2767 .- 2095-2759. ; 9:3, s. 362-376
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Silicon micro-ring resonators (MRRs) are compact and versatile devices whose periodic frequency response can be exploited for a wide range of applications. In this paper, we review our recent work on linear all-optical signal processing applications using silicon MRRs as passive filters. We focus on applications such as modulation format conversion, differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) demodulation, modulation speed enhancement of directly modulated lasers (DMLs), and monocycle pulse generation. The possibility to implement polarization diversity circuits, which reduce the polarization dependence of standard silicon MRRs, is illustrated on the particular example of DPSK demodulation.

  • Methylmercury in lake bed soils during re-flooding of an Appalachian reservoir in the northeastern USA
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Environmental research communications. - : IOP Publishing. - 2515-7620. ; 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mercury methylation, where inorganic mercury (Hg) is converted to methylmercury (MeHg), can increase in soils when flooded. While effects of the initial flooding of soils on MeHg production have been well studied, less is known about impacts of re-flooding on MeHg production. Lake Perez, an impounded recreational reservoir in the Appalachian Highlands, was completely drained then re-filled 7 years later. We use a combination of chemical, soil physical, and microbial data to quantify changes in MeHg before and after re-flooding of the lakebed. Portions that were transiently saturated due to pluvial flooding had the highest pre-flooded MeHg concentrations. When the lake was re-flooded, concentrations of MeHg in subaqueous soils increased by a factor of 2.74 (+174%) on average. Substantial variability was observed among the sampling sites, with smaller increases in MeHg at sites subjected to seasonal flooding during periods when the reservoir was drained. The increase of soil MeHg after re-flooding was lower in this study compared to studies that evaluated soil MeHg after initial flooding, indicating that re-flooding of a former lake bed caused a smaller response in MeHg production compared to initial flooding of terrestrial land. This study advances understanding of the environmental impact of impounded reservoirs.

  • Characteristics and Application Analysis of a Novel Full Fresh Air System Using Only Geothermal Energy for Space Cooling and Dehumidification
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Buildings. - : MDPI. - 2075-5309. ; 14:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To effectively reduce building energy consumption, a novel full fresh air system with a heat source tower (HST) and a borehole heat exchanger (BHE) was proposed for space cooling and dehumidification in this paper. The cooling system only adopts geothermal energy to produce dry and cold fresh air for space cooling and dehumidification through the BHE and HST, which has the advantage of non-condensate water compared to BHE systems integrated with a fan coil or chilled beam. Based on the established mathematical model of the cooling system, this paper analyzed the system characteristics, feasibility, operation strategy, energy performance, and cost-effectiveness of the proposed model in detail. The results show that the mathematical model has less than 10% error in estimating the system performance compared to the practical HST-BHE experimental set up. Under the specific boundary conditions, the cooling and dehumidification capacity of this system increases with the decrease in the air temperature, air moisture content, and inlet water temperature of the HST. The optimal cooling capacity and the system COP can be achieved when the air-water flow ratio is at 4:3. A case study was conducted in a residential building in Shenyang with an area of about 1800 m2. It was found that this system can fully meet the cooling and dehumidification demand in such a residential building. The operation strategy of the cooling system can be optimized by adjusting the air-water flow ratio from 4:3 to 3:2 during the early cooling season (7 June-1 July) and end cooling season (3 August-1 September). As a result, the average COP of the cooling system during the whole cooling season can be improved from 6.1 to 8.7. Compared with the air source heat pump (ASHP) and the ground source heat pump (GSHP) for space cooling, the proposed cooling system can achieve an energy saving rate of 123% and 26%, respectively. Considering that the BHE of the GSHP can be part of the proposed HST-BHE cooling system, the integration of the HST and GHSP for space cooling (and heating) is strongly recommended in actual applications.

  • Methanogenesis Is an Important Process in Controlling MeHg Concentration in Rice Paddy Soils Affected by Mining Activities
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science and Technology. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0013-936X .- 1520-5851. ; 54, s. 13517-13526
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rice paddies are agricultural sites of special concern because the potent toxin methylmercury (MeHg), produced in rice paddy soils, accumulates in rice grains. MeHg cycling is mostly controlled by microbes but their importance in MeHg production and degradation in paddy soils and across a Hg concentration gradient remains unclear. Here we used surface and rhizosphere soil samples in a series of incubation experiments in combination with stable isotope tracers to investigate the relative importance of different microbial groups on MeHg production and degradation across a Hg contamination gradient. We showed that sulfate reduction was the main driver of MeHg formation and concentration at control sites, and that methanogenesis had an important and complex role in MeHg cycling as Hg concentrations increased. The inhibition of methanogenesis at the mining sites led to an increase in MeHg production up to 16.6-fold and a decrease in MeHg degradation by up to 77%, suggesting that methanogenesis is associated with MeHg degradation as Hg concentrations increased. This study broadens our understanding of the roles of microbes in MeHg cycling and highlights methanogenesis as a key control of MeHg concentrations in rice paddies, offering the potential for mitigation of Hg contamination and for the safe production of rice in Hg-contaminated areas.

  • Shifts in mercury methylation across a peatland chronosequence : From sulfate reduction to methanogenesis and syntrophy
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Hazardous Materials. - : Elsevier. - 0304-3894 .- 1873-3336. ; 387
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Peatlands are globally important ecosystems where inorganic mercury is converted to bioaccumulating and highly toxic methylmercury, resulting in high risks of methylmercury exposure in adjacent aquatic ecosystems. Although biological mercury methylation has been known for decades, there is still a lack of knowledge about the organisms involved in mercury methylation and the drivers controlling their methylating capacity. In order to investigate the metabolisms responsible for mercury methylation and methylmercury degradation as well as the controls of both processes, we studied a chronosequence of boreal peatlands covering fundamentally different biogeochemical conditions. Potential mercury methylation rates decreased with peatland age, being up to 53 times higher in the youngest peatland compared to the oldest. Methylation in young mires was driven by sulfate reduction, while methanogenic and syntrophic metabolisms became more important in older systems. Demethylation rates were also highest in young wetlands, with a gradual shift from biotic to abiotic methylmercury degradation along the chronosequence. Our findings reveal how metabolic shifts drive mercury methylation and its ratio to demethylation as peatlands age.

  • Unmasking the physiology of mercury detoxifying bacteria from polluted sediments
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Hazardous Materials. - 0304-3894 .- 1873-3336. ; 467
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Marine sediments polluted from anthropogenic activities can be major reservoirs of toxic mercury species. Some microorganisms in these environments have the capacity to detoxify these pollutants, by using the mer operon. In this study, we characterized microbial cultures isolated from polluted marine sediments growing under diverse environmental conditions of salinity, oxygen availability and mercury tolerance. Specific growth rates and percentage of mercury removal were measured in batch cultures for a selection of isolates. A culture affiliated with Pseudomonas putida (MERCC_1942), which contained a mer operon as well as other genes related to metal resistances, was selected as the best candidate for mercury elimination. In order to optimize mercury detoxification conditions for strain MERCC_1942 in continuous culture, three different dilution rates were tested in bioreactors until the cultures achieved steady state, and they were subsequently exposed to a mercury spike; after 24 h, strain MERCC_1942 removed up to 76% of the total mercury. Moreover, when adapted to high growth rates in bioreactors, this strain exhibited the highest specific mercury detoxification rates. Finally, an immobilization protocol using the sol-gel technology was optimized. These results highlight that some sediment bacteria show capacity to detoxify mercury and could be used for bioremediation applications.

  • Effects of NH4+ doping on the hydrogen storage properties of metal hydrides
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International journal of hydrogen energy. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0360-3199 .- 1879-3487. ; 48:50, s. 19153-19159
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Doping can modify the properties of metal hydrogen storage materials significantly. Currently, the metal doping is a frequent strategy, while the non-metal cation doping has not been examined extensively so far. In this study, the effects of NH4+ doping on the hydrogen storage properties of different metal hydrides, including TiH2, Ti0·25V0·25Nb0·25Zr0·25H2, Ti0·5V0·5H2 and VH2, are investigated by first-principles calculations. It is found that the NH4+ presents a good affinity for metal hydrides and the NH4+ incorporation leads to charge redistribution and formation of dihydrogen bond. Furthermore, the NH4+ doping in metal hydrides is favorable for enhancing the hydrogen storage capacity and decreasing the thermal stability simultaneously. The possible reason for the NH4+ doping induced destabilization in metal hydrides is the relatively weak interaction between NH4+ and hydrogen atoms.

  • The origin of anomalous hydrogen occupation in high entropy alloys
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry A. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2050-7488 .- 2050-7496. ; 10:13, s. 7228-7237
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Metal hydrogen storage materials have been the focus of intensive research in the field of hydrogen-based economy. An outstanding question is that the number of hydrogen atoms accommodated in metal hydrides is generally much below the number of interstices, which limits their hydrogen storage capacities. Unlike traditional FCC metal hydrides where hydrogen can only occupy tetrahedral interstices, this study demonstrates that hydrogen can also occupy octahedral interstices in FCC high entropy alloy (HEA) hydrides, which leads to the violation of the Switendick criterion. For Ti25V25Nb25Ta25 and Ti25V25Nb25Zr25 HEAs, nearly 20% and 17.5% of octahedral interstices can be occupied by hydrogen, respectively. The anomalous hydrogen occupation mainly originates from the intrinsic electron delocalization between hydrogen atoms in HEA hydrides, which presents a sharp contrast to traditional metal hydrides. Such electron delocalization decreases repulsive interactions between hydrogens and promotes the electron localization at octahedral interstices. Additionally, this study reveals that hydrogen occupation at octahedral interstices enhances the structural disordering and decreases the thermal stability of HEA hydrides, which will be beneficial to reduce the dehydrogenation temperature. The presented results may provide a new strategy for the design of high-density storage materials.

  • Dyes as Labels in Biosensing
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Dyes and Pigments. - London : IntechOpen. - 9781839686153
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Investigation and evaluation of dyes play a vital role in the process of introduction novel labels and their corresponding sensing methods, which signify opportunities for the development of biosensors. This chapter introduces applications of various dyes as labels in biosensing. Bio-recognition molecules with dyes transduce biological information into measurable optical, electrochemical, magnetic or other kinds of signals for quantification. The dyes used in this field were summarized and reviewed according to their signal types, namely colorimetric, fluorescent and electrochemical. Some dyes can transduce signals between multiple physical signals. For some most important dyes, detailed descriptions were given focused on their unique properties, labeling methods and sensing mechanisms.
