  • Energy-Efficient Transceiver Design for Cache-Enabled Millimeter-Wave Systems
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Communications. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0090-6778 .- 1558-0857. ; 68:6, s. 3876-3889
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years, network densification and edge caching become effective approaches to reduce the burden on the fronthaul links and the content delivery latency for wireless communication systems. However, maximizing system spectral efficiency cannot directly provide any insight on their energy requirements/efficiency for cache-enabled millimeter-wave (mmWave) radio access networks (RANs). In this paper, we study the design of energy-efficient transceiver, consisting of analog and digital precoder/combiner, for the delivery phase of the downlink of cache-enabled mmWave RANs. Due to the non-convexity of the delivery rate and objective, the coupling between the digital and analog precoders/combiners, and the constant module constraint on the elements of analog precoders/combiners, the problem of interest is non-convex and hard to obtain the global optimal solution, even the local optimal solution. To this end, we first overcome these challenges one-by-one and then transform the original problem into tractable one. Finally, an algorithmic framework that converges to the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker solution with provable is developed to achieve the design of energy-efficient transceiver. Numerical results are provided to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, where fully digital precoding is used as benchmark.

  • Towards 6G wireless communication networks: vision, enabling technologies, and new paradigm shifts
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Science China Information Sciences. - : Science Press. - 1674-733X .- 1869-1919. ; 64:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fifth generation (5G) wireless communication networks are being deployed worldwide from 2020 and more capabilities are in the process of being standardized, such as mass connectivity, ultra-reliability, and guaranteed low latency. However, 5G will not meet all requirements of the future in 2030 and beyond, and sixth generation (6G) wireless communication networks are expected to provide global coverage, enhanced spectral/energy/cost efficiency, better intelligence level and security, etc. To meet these requirements, 6G networks will rely on new enabling technologies, i.e., air interface and transmission technologies and novel network architecture, such as waveform design, multiple access, channel coding schemes, multi-antenna technologies, network slicing, cell-free architecture, and cloud/fog/edge computing. Our vision on 6G is that it will have four new paradigm shifts. First, to satisfy the requirement of global coverage, 6G will not be limited to terrestrial communication networks, which will need to be complemented with non-terrestrial networks such as satellite and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication networks, thus achieving a space-air-ground-sea integrated communication network. Second, all spectra will be fully explored to further increase data rates and connection density, including the sub-6 GHz, millimeter wave (mmWave), terahertz (THz), and optical frequency bands. Third, facing the big datasets generated by the use of extremely heterogeneous networks, diverse communication scenarios, large numbers of antennas, wide bandwidths, and new service requirements, 6G networks will enable a new range of smart applications with the aid of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data technologies. Fourth, network security will have to be strengthened when developing 6G networks. This article provides a comprehensive survey of recent advances and future trends in these four aspects. Clearly, 6G with additional technical requirements beyond those of 5G will enable faster and further communications to the extent that the boundary between physical and cyber worlds disappears.

  • In-field determination of nanomolar nitrite in seawater using a sequential injection technique combined with solid phase enrichment and colorimetric detection
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Analytica Chimica Acta. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-4324 .- 0003-2670. ; 620:1-2, s. 82-88
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A novel sequential injection method for the determination of nitrite at nanomolar level in seawater samples has been developed. The pink azo compound was formed based on the Griess reaction and quantitatively adsorbed onto a Sep-Pak C18 cartridge. The enriched azo compound was rinsed with water and ethanol (28%, v/v) in turn, and then eluted with an eluent containing 26.6% (v/v) ethanol and 0.108mol L-1 H2SO4. Finally the azo compound was measured using a spectrophotometer at 543 nm. Under the optimized conditions, the linear calibration ranges were 0.71-42.9 nmol L-1 for a 150-mL sample and 35.7-429 nmol L-1 for a 15-mL sample. The relative standard deviation of 8 measurements was 1.44% for 14.3 nmol L-1 nitrite. For the 150 mL sample, the detection limit was estimated to be 0.1 nmol L-1. The throughput of the method was about 4 samples per hour. The proposed method has been successfully applied to the in-field determination of nanomolar concentrations of nitrite in seawater. • Joint Parameter Estimation From Binary Observations Over Decentralized Channels
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1053-587X .- 1941-0476. ; 70, s. 509-522
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In wireless sensor networks, due to the bandwidth constraint, the distributed nodes (DNs) might only provide binary representatives of the source signal, and then transmit them to the central node (CN). In this paper, we consider the joint estimation of signal amplitude and background noise variance from binary observations over decentralized channels. We first analyze the Cramér-Rao lower bounds (CRLBs) of the parameters of interest and develop a quasilinear estimator (QLE), in which the desirable estimates can be obtained from several intermediate parameters linearly. Next, we consider a more realistic situation where the decentralized channel is noisy during the data transmission. Based on the error propagation model, the asymptotic analysis shows that the performance of the proposed QLE is mainly dominated by the thresholds of the quantizers, which encourages us to adopt a correlated quantization (CQ) scheme by exploiting the spatial correlation among background noises/channel noises. To ease the implementation of QLE in practice, an adaptive quantization (AQ) scheme is also proposed so as to obtain reasonable selections of the required thresholds. Finally, numerical simulations are provided to validate our theoretical findings.

  • Codebook-Based Hybrid Precoding for Millimeter Wave Multiuser Systems
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing. - : IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC. - 1053-587X .- 1941-0476. ; 65:20, s. 5289-5304
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems, antenna architecture limitations make it difficult to apply conventional fully digital precoding techniques but call for low-cost analog radio frequency (RF) and digital baseband hybrid precoding methods. This paper investigates joint RF-baseband hybrid precoding for the downlink of multiuser multiantenna mmWave systems with a limited number of RF chains. Two performance measures, maximizing the spectral efficiency and the energy efficiency of the system, are considered. We propose a codebook-based RF precoding design and obtain the channel state information via a beam sweep procedure. Via the codebook-based design, the original system is transformed into a virtual multiuser downlink system with the RF chain constraint. Consequently, we are able to simplify the complicated hybrid precoding optimization problems to joint codeword selection and precoder design (JWSPD) problems. Then, we propose efficient methods to address the JWSPD problems and jointly optimize the RF and baseband precoders under the two performance measures. Finally, extensive numerical results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid precoders.

  • Coordinated Multicell Multiuser Precoding for Maximizing Weighted Sum Energy Efficiency
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing. - 1053-587X .- 1941-0476. ; 62:3, s. 741-751
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Energy efficiency optimization of wireless systems has become urgently important due to its impact on the global carbon footprint. In this paper we investigate energy efficient multicell multiuser precoding design and consider a new criterion of weighted sum energy efficiency, which is defined as the weighted sum of the energy efficiencies of multiple cells. This objective is more general than the existing methods and can satisfy heterogeneous requirements from different kinds of cells, but it is hard to tackle due to its sum-of-ratio form. In order to address this non-convex problem, the user rate is first formulated as a polynomial optimization problem with the test conditional probabilities to be optimized. Based on that, the sum-of-ratio form of the energy efficient precoding problem is transformed into a parameterized polynomial form optimization problem, by which a solution in closed form is achieved through a two-layer optimization. We also show that the proposed iterative algorithm is guaranteed to converge. Numerical results are finally provided to confirm the effectiveness of our energy efficient beamforming algorithm. It is observed that in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region, the optimal energy efficiency and the optimal sum rate are simultaneously achieved by our algorithm; while in the middle-high SNR region, a certain performance loss in terms of the sum rate is suffered to guarantee the weighed sum energy efficiency.

  • Energy Efficient Coordinated Beamforming for Multicell System : Duality-Based Algorithm Design and Massive MIMO Transition
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Communications. - : IEEE. - 0090-6778 .- 1558-0857. ; 63:12, s. 4920-4935
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we investigate joint beamforming and power allocation in multicell multiple-input single-output (MISO) downlink networks. Our goal is to maximize the utility function defined as the ratio between the system weighted sum rate and the total power consumption subject to the users' quality of service requirements and per-base-station (BS) power constraints. The considered problem is nonconvex and its objective is in a fractional form. To circumvent this problem, we first resort to an virtual uplink formulations of the the primal problem by introducing an auxiliary variable and applying the uplink-downlink duality theory. By exploiting the analytic structure of the optimal beamformers in the dual uplink problem, an efficient algorithm is then developed to solve the considered problem. Furthermore, to reduce further the exchange overhead between coordinated BSs in a large-scale antenna system, an effective coordinated power allocation solution only based on statistical channel state information is reached by deriving the asymptotic optimization problem, which is used to obtain the power allocation in a long-term timescale. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of our proposed schemes and show that both the spectral efficiency and the energy efficiency can be simultaneously improved over traditional downlink coordinated schemes, especially in the middle-high transmit power region.

  • Energy Efficient Hybrid Precoding for Millimeter Wave F-RAN with Wireless Fronthaul
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 2018 IEEE Global Communications Conference, GLOBECOM 2018 - Proceedings. - : IEEE. - 9781538647271
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication emerges as an enabling technology for Gbps transmission. A further performance enhancement can be achieved by incorporating mmWave communication into fog radio access networks (F-RANs), which alleviate the large path loss of mmWave signals by shortening the distance between transmitters and users and reduce the latency by caching at enhanced remote radio heads (eRRHs). The full benefit of mmWave F-RANs is leveraged on a joint design of signal processing at the centralized baseband unit (BBU) and distributed eRRHs. In this paper, we propose an energy efficient hybrid precoding design for the downlink mmWave F-RANs with wireless fronthaul links, where digital and hybrid precoders are exploited at the BBU and eRRHs, respectively. We develop an effective method to solve the resulting difficult precoding optimization problem and provide numerical results to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed mmWave F-RAN design.

  • A Codebook-Based Precoding For Dual-Hop Downlink With Mimo Amplify-And-Forward Relaying
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: SPAWC. - NEW YORK : IEEE. - 9781424436958 ; , s. 245-249
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper deals with the practical precoding design for a two-hop downlink with MIMO amplify-and-forward relaying. A novel scheme of codebook-based joint precoding at both the base station and the relay station is first presented, in which a distributed codeword selection is proposed to concurrently choose two joint precoders such that the feedback delay is considerably reduced. Then, the joint codebook design in such a joint precoding system is analyzed, revealing that independent codebook designs at the base station and relay station using the conventional Grassmannian subspace packing method is able to guarantee that the overall performance improves with either size of two codebooks. The excellent performances of the proposed scheme, in terms of both the sum rate and the BER, are finally confirmed with computational simulations.

  • A Limited Feedback Joint Precoding for Amplify-and-Forward Relaying
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing. - 1053-587X .- 1941-0476. ; 58:3, s. 1347-1357
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper deals with the practical precoding design for a dual hop downlink with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) amplify-and-forward relaying. First, assuming that full channel state information (CSI) of the two hop channels is available, a suboptimal dual hop joint precoding scheme, i.e., precoding at both the base station and relay station, is investigated. Based on its structure, a scheme of limited feedback joint precoding using joint codebooks is then proposed, which uses a distributed codeword selection to concurrently choose two joint precoders such that the feedback delay is considerably decreased. Finally, the joint codebook design for the limited feedback joint precoding system is analyzed, and results reveal that independent codebook designs at the base station and relay station using the conventional Grassmannian subspace packing method is able to guarantee that the overall performance of the dual hop joint precoding scheme improves with the size of each of the two codebooks. Simulation results show that the proposed dual hop joint precoding system using distributed codeword selection scheme exhibits a rate or BER performance close to the one using the optimal centralized codeword selection scheme, while having lower computational complexity and shorter feedback delay.
