  • The large enriched germanium experiment for neutrinoless double beta decay (LEGEND)
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - : Author(s). - 1551-7616 .- 0094-243X. ; 1894
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay (0νββ) would show that lepton number is violated, reveal that neu-trinos are Majorana particles, and provide information on neutrino mass. A discovery-capable experiment covering the inverted ordering region, with effective Majorana neutrino masses of 15 - 50 meV, will require a tonne-scale experiment with excellent energy resolution and extremely low backgrounds, at the level of ∼0.1 count /(FWHM·t·yr) in the region of the signal. The current generation 76Ge experiments GERDA and the Majorana Demonstrator, utilizing high purity Germanium detectors with an intrinsic energy resolution of 0.12%, have achieved the lowest backgrounds by over an order of magnitude in the 0νββ signal region of all 0νββ experiments. Building on this success, the LEGEND collaboration has been formed to pursue a tonne-scale 76Ge experiment. The collaboration aims to develop a phased 0νββ experimental program with discovery potential at a half-life approaching or at 1028 years, using existing resources as appropriate to expedite physics results.

  • Vagus nerve stimulation promotes resolution of inflammation by a mechanism that involves Alox15 and requires the α7nAChR subunit
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. - : Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. - 0027-8424 .- 1091-6490. ; 119:22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nonresolving inflammation underlies a range of chronic inflammatory diseases, and therapeutic acceleration of resolution of inflammation may improve outcomes. Neural reflexes regulate the intensity of inflammation (for example, through signals in the vagus nerve), but whether activation of the vagus nerve promotes the resolution of inflammation in vivo has been unknown. To investigate this, mice were subjected to electrical vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) or sham surgery at the cervical level followed by zymosan-induced peritonitis. The duration of inflammation resolution was significantly reduced and efferocytosis was significantly increased in mice treated with VNS as compared with sham. Lipid mediator (LM) metabololipidomics revealed that mice treated with VNS had higher levels of specialized proresolving mediators (SPMs), particularly from the omega-3 docosahexaenoic (DHA) and docosapentaenoic (n-3 DPA) metabolomes, in peritoneal exudates. VNS also shifted the ratio between proinflammatory and proresolving LMs toward a proresolving profile, but this effect by VNS was inverted in mice deficient in 12/15-lipoxgenase (Alox15), a key enzyme in this SPM biosynthesis. The significant VNS-mediated reduction of neutrophil numbers in peritoneal exudates was absent in mice deficient in the cholinergic α7-nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunit (α7nAChR), an essential component of the inflammatory reflex. Thus, VNS increased local levels of SPM and accelerated resolution of inflammation in zymosan-induced peritonitis by a mechanism that involves Alox15 and requires the α7nAChR.

  • Enhanced phase-matched second-harmonic generation in a ferroelectric liquid crystal waveguide
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Molecular Crystals and Liquid Crystals Science and Technology. - 1058-725X. ; 368, s. 4061-4070
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A binary mixture of crosslinkable ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) was used for the design of a channel waveguide. The liquid crystal was aligned in layers parallel to the glass plates (homeotropic) in a sandwich geometry and then the arrangement was permanently fixed by photopolymerization which yielded a polar network possessing a high thermal and mechanical stability. The linear and nonlinear optical properties have been measured and all four independent components of the nonlinear susceptibility tensor d have been determined. The off-resonant d-coefficients are remarkably high and comparable to those of the best known inorganic materials. Phase-matching was achieved by taking advantage of the modal dispersion of the waveguide. A reversal of sign of chi ((2)) at the nodal plane of the electric field distribution of the first-order mode was needed to maximize the overlap. integral between the fundamental and the second-harmonic (SH) light. In samples with chi ((2)) inversion the SH Signal was 1000 larger that in samples without chi ((2)) inversion.

  • Nonlinear optical properties of a channel waveguide produced with crosslinkable ferroelectric liquid crystals
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: The European Physical Journal E Soft matter. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1292-8941 .- 1292-895X. ; 3:3, s. 245-251
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A binary mixture of ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) was used for the design of a channel waveguide. The FLCs possess two important functionalities: a chromophore with a high hyperpolarizability beta and photoreactive groups. The smectic liquid crystal is aligned in layers parallel to the glass plates in a sandwich geometry. This alignment offers several advantages, such as that moderate electric fields are sufficient to achieve a high degree of polar order. The arrangement was then permanently fixed by photopolymerization which yielded a polar network possessing a high thermal and mechanical stability which did not show any sign of degradation within the monitored period of several months. The linear and nonlinear optical properties have been measured and all four independent components of the nonlinear susceptibility tensor (d) over bar have been determined. The off-resonant d-coefficients are remarkably high and comparable to those of the best known inorganic materials. The alignment led to an inherent channel waveguide for p-polarized light without additional preparation steps. The photopolymerization did not induce scattering sites in the waveguide and the normalized losses were less than 2 dB/cm. The material offers a great potential for the design of nonlinear optical devices such as frequency doublers of low-power laser diodes.

  • Wireless optoelectronic devices for vagus nerve stimulation in mice
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Neural Engineering. - : IOP Publishing. - 1741-2560 .- 1741-2552. ; 19:6, s. 066031-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a promising approach for the treatment of a wide variety of debilitating conditions, including autoimmune diseases and intractable epilepsy. Much remains to be learned about the molecular mechanisms involved in vagus nerve regulation of organ function. Despite an abundance of well-characterized rodent models of common chronic diseases, currently available technologies are rarely suitable for the required long-term experiments in freely moving animals, particularly experimental mice. Due to challenging anatomical limitations, many relevant experiments require miniaturized, less invasive, and wireless devices for precise stimulation of the vagus nerve and other peripheral nerves of interest. Our objective is to outline possible solutions to this problem by using nongenetic light-based stimulation. Approach. We describe how to design and benchmark new microstimulation devices that are based on transcutaneous photovoltaic stimulation. The approach is to use wired multielectrode cuffs to test different stimulation patterns, and then build photovoltaic stimulators to generate the most optimal patterns. We validate stimulation through heart rate analysis. Main results. A range of different stimulation geometries are explored with large differences in performance. Two types of photovoltaic devices are fabricated to deliver stimulation: photocapacitors and photovoltaic flags. The former is simple and more compact, but has limited efficiency. The photovoltaic flag approach is more elaborate, but highly efficient. Both can be used for wireless actuation of the vagus nerve using light impulses. Significance. These approaches can enable studies in small animals that were previously challenging, such as long-term in vivo studies for mapping functional vagus nerve innervation. This new knowledge may have potential to support clinical translation of VNS for treatment of select inflammatory and neurologic diseases.

  • Phase-matched second-harmonic generation in a ferroelectric liquid crystal waveguide
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 77:3, s. 319-321
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • True phase-matched second-harmonic generation in a waveguide of crosslinkable ferroelectric liquid crystals is demonstrated. These materials allow the formation of macroscopically polar structures whose order can be frozen by photopolymerization. Homeotropic alignment was chosen which offers decisive advantages compared to other geometries. All parameters contributing to the conversion efficiency are maximized by deliberately controlling the supramolecular arrangement. The system has the potential to achieve practical level of performances as a frequency doubler for low power laser-diodes.

  • Curvature and wrinkling of premixed flame kernels - comparisons of OHPLIF and DNS data
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Symposium (International) on Combustion. - : Elsevier BV. - 0082-0784. ; 30, s. 809-817
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effects of curvature and wrinkling on the growth of turbulent premixed flame kernels have been investigated using both 2D OH planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) and 3D direct numerical simulation (DNS). Comparisons of results between the two approaches show a high level of agreement, providing confidence in the simplified chemistry treatment employed in the DNS, and indicating that chemistry may have only a limited influence on the evolution of the freely propagating flame. This is in contrast to previous studies of the very early flame development where chemistry may be dominant. Statistics for curvature and wrinkling are presented in the form of probability density functions, and there is good agreement with previous findings. The limitations of 2D PLIF measurements of curvature are quantified by comparison with full 3D information obtained from the DNS. The usefulness of PLIF in providing data over a wide parameter range is illustrated using statistics obtained from both CH4/air and H-2/air mixtures, which show a markedly different behaviour due to their different thermo-diffusive properties. The results provide a demonstration of the combined power of PLIF and DNS for flame investigation. Each technique is shown to compensate for the weaknesses of the other and to reinforce the strengths of both.

  • What Drives Performance in Globally Focused Marketing Organizations? A Three-Country Study
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of International Marketing. - : SAGE Publications. - 1069-031X .- 1547-7215. ; 15:2, s. 58-85
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In marketing, compared with other organizational dimensions such as leadership, culture, structure, and processes, relatively scant attention has been devoted to the effect of strategy on firm performance, especially in the global context. Rapid globalization of markets, along with ever-increasing dynamic demands on the marketing organization, necessitates a new examination. This article reports on a study that examines the role of strategy and other organizational forces on the performance of globally focused marketing organizations headquartered in Norway, Sweden, and the United States. The general findings indicate that (1) the constructs of leadership, strategy, and culture precede the globally focused marketing organization's structure; (2) strategy precedes structure; and (3) organizational structure and processes influence marketing and financial performance. Many relationships appear to be consistent across countries, and some are uniquely tied to the home-country markets.

  • Interior flow and near-nozzle spray development in a marine-engine diesel fuel injector
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Experiments in Fluids. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1432-1114 .- 0723-4864. ; 57:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A consolidated effort at optically characterising flow patterns, in-nozzle cavitation, and near-nozzle jet structure of a marine diesel fuel injector is presented. A combination of several optical techniques was employed to fully transparent injector models, compound metal-glass and full metal injectors. They were all based on a common real-scale dual nozzle hole geometry for a marine two-stroke diesel engine. In a stationary flow rig, flow velocities in the sac-volume and nozzle holes were measured using PIV, and in-nozzle cavitation visualized using high-resolution shadowgraphs. The effect of varying cavitation number was studied and results compared to CFD predictions. In-nozzle cavitation and near-nozzle jet structure during transient operation were visualized simultaneously, using high-speed imaging in an atmospheric pressure spray rig. Near-nozzle spray formation was investigated using ballistic imaging. Finally, the injector geometry was tested on a full-scale marine diesel engine, where the dynamics of near-nozzle jet development was visualized using highspeed shadowgraphy. The range of studies focused on a single common geometry allows a comprehensive survey of phenomena ranging from first inception of cavitation under well-controlled flow conditions to fuel jet structure at real engine conditions.
