- In the Boran idiom of agnatic descent, clans and lineages are categorised into two exogamous moieties, Gona and Sabbo. Each moiety has got a Qaallu, a ritual figure-head, and a Qaallitti, his ritual wife who is to mother an only son who in due course will succeed his father in the position of Qaallu. Within their respective moieties, descendants of the first Qaallu have inherited the office since the 16th century. Whilst the marriage of the Qaallu and Qaallitti of the Gona is in accordance with the general rule of exogamy, the Qaallu of the Sabbo is enjoined to break the rule and choose the Qaallitti from a specific clan of his own moiety. This paper explores some aspects of the origin of this anomaly.
