  • Cichorium intybus L. significantly alleviates cigarette smoke-induced acute lung injury by lowering NF-κB pathway activation and inflammatory mediators
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Heliyon. - : Elsevier. - 2405-8440. ; 9:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Cigarette smoke (CS) is one of the primary causes of acute lung injury (ALI) via provoking pulmonary inflammation and oxidative stress. Despite substantial studies, no effective treatment for ALI is presently available.Purpose: New prospective treatment options for ALI are required. Thus, this project was designed to investigate the in vivo and in vitro protective effects of 70 % methanolic-aqueous crude extract of whole plant of Cichorium intybus (Ci.Mce) against CS-induced ALI.Study design: /methods: Initially, male Swiss albino mice were subjected to whole-body CS exposure for 10 continuous days to prepare CS-induced ALI models. Normal saline (10 mL/kg), Ci.Mce (100, 200, 300 mg/kg), and Dexamethasone (1 mg/kg) were orally administered to respective animal groups 1 h prior to CS-exposure. 24 hrs after the last CS-exposure, BALF and lungs were harvested to study the key characteristics of ALI. Next, HPLC analysis was done to explore the phytoconstituents. Results: Ci.Mce exhibited significant reductions in lung macrophage and neutrophil infiltration, lung weight coefficient, and albumin exudation. Additionally, it effectively ameliorated lung histopathological alterations and hypoxemia. Notably, Ci.Mce exerted inhibitory effects on the excessive generation of IL-6, IL-1β, and KC in both CS-induced ALI murine models and CSE-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages. Noteworthy benefits included the attenuation of oxidative stress induced by CS, evidenced by decreased levels of MDA, TOS, and MPO, alongside enhanced TAC production. Furthermore, Ci.Mce demonstrated a marked reduction in CS-induced NF-κB expression, both in vivo and in vitro. Conclusion: Consequently, Cichorium intybus could be a therapeutic option for CS-induced ALI due to its ability to suppress inflammatory reactions, mitigate oxidative stress, and quell NF-κB p65 activation.

  • Hydroquinone; a novel bioactive compound from plant-derived smoke can cue seed germination of lettuce
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Chemistry. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 2296-2646. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Plant-derived smoke has been known to play an important role in distribution and growth of vegetation. Using a proficiently designed furnace, we extracted smoke from the leaves of four plant viz. Helianthus annuus,Aloe vera,Ginkgo biloba, and Cymbopogon jwarancusa. Smoke dilutions obtained from these plants were obtained in different concentrations to identify potential lettuce growth promoting smoke solution. Results revealed that smoke obtained from G. biloba significantly enhanced the lettuce seed germination. This solution was then partitioned into ethyl acetate, dichloromethane, n-hexane, chloroform and ether fractions. Ethyl acetate fraction was found to be potent to enhance seed germination. This fraction was subjected to column chromatography and spectroscopic techniques to obtain compound 1. This compound was identified as hydroquinone using 1D and 2D NMR techniques. At low concentrations (5, 10, and 20 ppm), compound 1 enhanced the lettuce seed germination; however, higher concentrations inhibited its growth as compared to control.

  • Biferrocenyl Schiff bases as efficient corrosion inhibitors for an aluminium alloy in HCl solution : a combined experimental and theoretical study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: RSC Advances. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 2046-2069. ; 10:13, s. 7585-7599
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The corrosion inhibitive capabilities of some ferrocene-based Schiff bases on aluminium alloy AA2219-T6 in acidic medium were investigated using Tafel polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), weight loss measurement, FT-IR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) techniques. The influence of molecular configuration on the corrosion inhibition behavior has been explored by quantum chemical calculation. Ferrocenyl Schiff bases 4,4′-((((ethane-1,2-diylbis(oxy))bis(4,1-phenylene))bis(methaneylylidene))bis(azaneylylidene))bisferrocene (Fcua), 4,4′-((((ethane-1,2-diylbis(oxy))bis(2-methoxy-1,4-phenylene))bis(methaneylylidene))bis(azaneylylidene))bisferrocene (Fcub) and 4,4′-((((ethane-1,2-diylbis(oxy))bis(2-ethoxy-1,4-phenylene))bis(methaneylylidene))bis(azaneylylidene))bisferrocene (Fcuc) have been synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopic studies. These compounds showed a substantial corrosion inhibition against aluminium alloy in 0.1 M of HCl at 298 K. Fcub and Fcuc showed better anticorrosion efficiency as compared with Fcua due to the electron donating methoxy and ethoxy group substitutions, respectively. Polarization curves also indicated that the studied biferrocenyl Schiff bases were mixed type anticorrosive materials. The inhibition of the aluminium alloy surface by biferrocenyl Schiff bases was evidenced through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies. Semi-empirical quantum mechanical studies revealed a correlation between corrosion inhibition efficiency and structural functionalities.
