  • Photocatalysis and adsorption kinetics of azo dyes by nanoparticles of nickel oxide and copper oxide and their nanocomposite in an aqueous medium
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: PeerJ. - : PeerJ. - 2167-8359. ; 10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Azo dyes are recalcitrant organic pollutants present in textile industry effluents. Conventional treatment methods to remove them come with a range of disadvantages. Nanoparticles and their nanocomposites offer more efficient, less expensive and easy to handle wastewater treatment alternative. Methods. In this study, nanoparticles of nickel oxide (NiO-NPs), copper oxide (CuO-NPs) and their nanocomposite (NiO/CuO-NC) were synthesized using co- precipitation method. The functional groups present on the surface of synthesized nanomaterials were verified using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Surface morphology was assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) whereas purity, shape and size of the crystallite were determined using X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. The potential of these nanomaterials to degrade three dyes i.e., Reactive Red-2 (RR-2), Reactive Black-5 (RB-5) and Orange II sodium salt (OII) azo dyes, was determined in an aqueous medium under visible light (photocatalysis). The photodegradation effectiveness of all nanomaterials was evaluated under different factors like nanomaterial dose (0.02-0.1 g 10 mL-1), concentration of dyes (20-100 mg L-1), and irradiation time (60-120 min). They were also assessed for their potential to adsorb RR-2 and OII dyes. Results. Results revealed that at optimum concentration (60 mgL-1) of RR-2, RB-5, and OII dyes, NiO-NPs degraded 90, 82 and 83%, CuO-NPs degraded 49, 34, and 44%, whereas the nanocomposite NiO/CuO-NC degraded 92, 93, and 96% of the said dyes respectively. The nanomaterials were categorized as the efficient degraders of the dyes in the order: NiO/CuO-NC > NiO-NPs > CuO-NPs. The highest degradation potential shown by the nanocomposite was attributed to its large surface area, small particles size, and quick reactions which were proved by advance analytical techniques. The equilibrium and kinetic adsorption of RR-2 and OII on NiO-NPs, CuO-NPs, and NiO/CuO-NC were well explained with Langmuir and Pseudo second order model, respectively (R2 ≥0.96). The maximum RR-2 adsorption (103 mg/g) was obtained with NiO/CuO-NC. It is concluded that nanocomposites are more efficient and promising for the dyes degradation from industrial wastewater as compared with dyes adsorption onto individual NPs. Thus, the nanocomposite NiO/CuO-NC can be an excellent candidate for photodegradation as well as the adsorption of the dyes in aqueous media.

  • Molecular Detection of Multidrug Resistant Salmonella Species Isolated from Broiler Farm in Bangladesh
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Pathogens. - : MDPI AG. - 2076-0817. ; 9:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multidrug resistant (MDR) Salmonella are a leading cause of foodborne diseases and serious human health concerns worldwide. In this study we detected MDR Salmonella in broiler chicken along with the resistance genes and class 1 integron gene intl1. A total of 100 samples were collected from broiler farms comprising 50 cloacal swabs, 35 litter and 15 feed samples. Overall prevalence of Salmonella was 35% with the highest detected in cloacal swabs. Among the Salmonella, 30 isolates were confirmed as S. enterica serovar Typhimurium using molecular methods of PCR. Disk diffusion susceptibility test revealed that all the Salmonella were classified as MDR with the highest resistance to tetracycline (97.14%), chloramphenicol (94.28%), ampicillin (82.85%) and streptomycin (77.14%). The most prevalent resistance genotypes were tetA (97.14%), floR (94.28%), blaTEM-1 (82.85%) and aadA1 (77.14%). In addition, among the MDR Salmonella, 20% were positive for class 1 integron gene (intl1). As far as we know, this is the first study describing the molecular basis of antibiotic resistance in MDR Salmonella from broiler farms in Bangladesh. In addition to tetA, floR, blaTEM-1, aadA1 and intl1 were also detected in the isolated MDR Salmonella. The detection of MDR Salmonella in broiler chicken carrying intl1 is of serious public health concern because of their zoonotic nature and possibilities to enter into the food chain.

  • Thermal Spray Coatings for Electromagnetic Wave Absorption and Interference Shielding : A Review and Future Challenges
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Advanced Engineering Materials. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1438-1656 .- 1527-2648.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This review aims to consolidate scattered literature on thermally sprayed coatings with nonionizing electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption and shielding over specific wavelengths potentially useful in diverse applications (e.g., microwave to millimeter wave, solar selective, photocatalytic, interference shielding, thermal barrier-heat/emissivity). Materials EM properties such as electric permittivity, magnetic permeability, electrical conductivity, and dielectric loss are critical due to which a material can respond to absorbed, reflected, transmitted, or may excite surface electromagnetic waves at frequencies typical of electromagnetic radiations. Thermal spraying is a standard industrial practice used for depositing coatings where the sprayed layer is formed by successive impact of fully or partially molten droplets/particles of a material exposed to high or moderate temperatures and velocities. However, as an emerging novel application of an existing thermal spray techniques, some special considerations are warranted for targeted development involving relevant characterization. Key potential research areas of development relating to material selection and coating fabrication strategies and their impact on existing practices in the field are identified. The study shows a research gap in the feedstock materials design and doping, and their complex selection covered by thermally sprayed coatings that can be critical to advancing applications exploiting their electromagnetic properties.

  • Microstructure and wear behaviour of powder and suspension hybrid Al2O3–YSZ coatings
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Ceramics International. - : Elsevier BV. - 0272-8842 .- 1873-3956. ; 44:7, s. 8498-8504
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract Suspension based plasma sprayed coatings can yield superior microstructural and tribological properties compared to conventional powder based plasma sprayed coatings. This study investigates a new hybrid method, using simultaneous spraying from powder and suspension, to produce composite coatings using alumina and yttria stabilised zirconia (YSZ), with potentially excellent wear and thermal properties. Dry sliding wear showed the alumina suspension-YSZ suspension coating yielded half the specific wear rate of the alumina powder-YSZ suspension, explained by preferential gamma alumina formation and increased porosity in the latter. Both YSZ-containing samples showed superior toughness and wear rate than simple alumina powder and suspension coatings.

  • Effect of SiO2 Dispersion on Chlorine-Induced High-Temperature Corrosion of High-Velocity Air-Fuel Sprayed NiCrMo Coating
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Corrosion. - : NACE International. - 0010-9312 .- 1938-159X. ; 74:9, s. 984-1000
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • NiCrMo coatings with and without dispersed SiO2 were deposited using high-velocity air-fuel technique. Thermogravimetric experiments were conducted in 5% O-2 + 500 vppm HCl + N-2 with and without a KCl deposit at 600 degrees C for up to 168 h. The SiO2-containing coating showed lower weight change as a result of formation of a protective and adherent Cr-rich oxide scale. SiO2 decelerated short-circuit diffusion of Cr3+ through scale's defects, e.g., vacancies, and promoted the selective oxidation of Cr to form the protective Cr-rich oxide scale. Furthermore, the presence of SiO2 led to less subsurface depletion of Cr in the coating, and accordingly less corrosion of the substrate. The formed corrosion product on the SiO2-free coating was highly porous, non-adherent, and thick.

  • Influence of KCl and HCl on high temperature corrosion of HVAF-sprayed NiCrAlY and NiCrMo coatings
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Materials & design. - : Elsevier BV. - 0264-1275 .- 1873-4197. ; 148, s. 17-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The oxidation performance of NiCrAlY and NiCrMo coatings thermally sprayed by high velocity air-fuel (HVAF) technique has been investigated in a chloridizing-oxidizing environment, with and without a KCl deposit, at 600 °C for up to 168 h. Both coatings protected the substrate in the absence of KCl due to formation of a dense Cr-rich oxide scale. In the presence of KCl, Cl−/Cl2 diffused through a non-protective and porous NiCr2O4 scale formed on NiCrAlY, leading to formation of volatile CrCl3. On the other hand, Mo in NiCrMo stimulated the formation of a more protective Cr-rich oxide scale which increased the corrosion resistance by reducing Cl−/Cl2 diffusion.
