  • Revisiting the political nature of corporate philanthropic foundations : the case of Sweden
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Handbook on corporate foundations. - Cham, Switzerland : Springer Publishing Company. - 3030257614 - 9783030257613 - 3030257584 - 9783030257583 ; , s. 253-269
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Almost a decade ago, it was argued that scholarly knowledge largely overlooked the political nature of foundations in favor of issues related to legislation, board composition, management, and societal contributions. As this argument still seems to apply, the aim of this chapter is to explore the political nature of corporate foundations (CFs). To meet this aim, this chapter draws out the contours of an emergent social imaginary concerning welfare provision from the outlook of CFs. The analysis builds on both survey data regarding CFs in Sweden and interviews with representatives from four different Swedish CFs, concerning the interlock between organizational visions and perceived contributions to welfare in this national context. A main conclusion in the chapter relates to the intermediary position of these organizations as they straddle the boundaries of corporate contexts and a public welfare system where they have a potential to influence both these worlds simultaneously, by carrying norms, values, and practices between them. It is also here that parts of the political significance of CFs can be found—both as expressions and containers of an emergent political vision of welfare in society.

  • Ett pris man får betala? : Om kvalitet i socialtjänstens arbete med skyddat boende
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk tidskrift. - : Sociologisk Forskning, Swedish Sociological Association. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 59:4, s. 447-471
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While most shelters for abused women in Sweden used to be run by the women’s movement, about half of the shelters are, today, operated by private companies. The social services’ procurement of these shelters has resulted in increased demands for quality and monito-ring. This article examines perceptions of quality regarding shelters among local politicians on municipal level and managers in the social services. The analysis shows that perceptions of quality range from adherence to the social services’ assignment orders to evidence, cost-effectiveness, and competence among staff both at the social services and shelters. Moreover, an overly “caring” attitude among staff both at the social services and shelters is portrayed as problematic and unprofessional. The article concludes that the social services’ work with quality, procurement of, and placements in shelters can constitute an unwieldy conf lict surface where logics and practices typical of both market and welfare are pitted against each other

  • Gender in nonprofit organizations : A critical review and research agenda
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nonprofit Management & Leadership. - : Wiley. - 1048-6682 .- 1542-7854. ; 34:1, s. 195-209
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we suggest a research agenda based on a review of literature exploring gender in nonprofit organizations (NPOs) published in key field-specific journals in nonprofit studies. The literature review shows that gender is often included as an unproblematized variable and that few studies focus on organizational processes that (re)produce gender inequalities and promote gender equality in NPOs. There is thus a need to expand our knowledge concerning gender in NPOs. The purpose of this paper is therefore to contribute to the development of empirical and theoretical work concerning organizational processes that (re)produce gender in NPOs. In order to inspire such endeavors, we outline a research agenda that proposes an understanding of gender informed by gender theory, an acknowledgement of NPOs as arenas where gender is (re)produced, and a development of theories on NPOs as gendered organizations.

  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Drawing on feminist theory and critique, this chapter explores how gender and gender inequalities are accounted for in mainstream scholarly writings on nonprofit leadership, and discusses the way this affects our understanding of leaders and leadership in nonprofit organizations (NPOs). By this we hope you will have an opportunity to expand your perspective of leadership and at the same time help you obtain a few tools for how to understand this particular topic not only in texts, but also in real life.

  • Business as Usual? : On Managerialization and the Adoption of the Balanced Scorecard in a Democratically Governed Civil Society Organization
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Administrative Theory & Praxis. - 1084-1806 .- 1949-0461. ; 35:2, s. 223-247
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the process through which civil society organizations (CSOs) adopt and develop reliance on corporate management knowledge and practices. It draws on theories related to organizational change and critical approaches to managerialism in an analysis of how and with what consequences a large and democratically governed Swedish CSO adopted the balanced scorecard. The analysis suggests that the adoption of corporate management knowledge and practices (1) involves a dialectic relationship with other change processes, in this case centralization and professionalization, (2) institutionalizes the idea that the corporate world provides valid solutions for how to assess and develop CSOs, and (3) creates or widens the divide between internal democratic governance and executive structures. The concluding section discusses these results and suggests further research.
