  • gamma-ray diagnostics of energetic ions in JET
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 42:8, s. 999-1007
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports recent progress in the field of gamma-ray diagnosis of fast ions in the JET tokamak. The gamma-rays, born in nuclear reactions between fast ions and main plasma impurities and/or plasma fuel ions, are analysed with a new modelling tool (the GAMMOD code) that has been developed for a quantitative analysis of the measured gamma-ray energy spectra. The analysis of the gamma-ray energy spectra identifies the different fast ions giving rise to the gamma-ray emission and assesses the effective tail temperatures and relative concentrations of these fast ions. This assessment is possible, since the excitation functions for the different nuclear reactions are well established and exhibit a threshold or/and a resonant nature. The capabilities of the gamma-ray spectral analysis are illustrated with the examples from the recent gamma-ray diagnostic measurements of He-4, He-3, deuterium and hydrogen ions accelerated by ion-cyclotron resonance frequency heating in JET. Simultaneous measurements of several fast ion species, including highly energetic gamma-particles, are demonstrated. In addition to the gamma-spectroscopy, tomographic reconstructions of the radial profile of the gamma-ray emission are performed using the JET neutron profile monitor, thus providing direct measurements of the radial profiles of fast ions in JET.

  • Fast ion distributions driven by polychromatic ICRF waves on JET
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0741-3335 .- 1361-6587. ; 47:9, s. 1439-1457
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Experiments have been carried out on the JET tokamak to investigate fast He-3 and hydrogen minority ion populations accelerated by ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) waves launched with multiple frequencies (i.e. up to four frequencies separated by up to approximate to 15%). This 'polychromatic' heating is compared with single-frequency, 'monochromatic', ICRF heating of reference discharges with similar power levels. Information on the fast ion populations is provided by two-dimensional gamma-ray emission tomography and the measurements are compared with numerical modelling. Polychromatic heating with resonances in the plasma centre (R-res approximate to R-0) and on the low magnetic-field side (LFS) (R-res > R-0) is found to produce predominantly high-energy standard trapped ions, while resonances on the high magnetic-field side (R-res < R-0) increase the fraction of high-energy passing ions. Monochromatic heating with a central resonance produces stronger gamma-ray emission with the maximum emission in the midplane close to, and on the LFS of, the resonance, in agreement with the calculated radial distribution of fast ion orbits. Both the fast ion tail temperature and energy content are found to be lower with polychromatic waves. Polychromatic ICRF heating has the advantage of producing smaller-amplitude and shorter-period sawteeth, consistent with a lower fast ion pressure inside the q = 1 surface, and higher ion to electron temperature ratios.

  • Efficacy of an Internet-Based Community Reinforcement and Family Training Program to Increase Treatment Engagement for AUD and to Improve Psychiatric Health for CSOs: A Randomized Controlled Trial
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Alcohol and alcoholism (Oxford, Oxfordshire). - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1464-3502 .- 0735-0414. ; 55:2, s. 187-195
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIMS: Community Reinforcement Approach and Family Training (CRAFT) is a support program for concerned significant others (CSOs) to identified persons (IPs) with alcohol use disorders, with the purpose of engaging IPs to treatment and to improve CSO functioning. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the efficacy of an internet-based version of CRAFT (iCRAFT). METHODS: Randomized controlled trial comparing iCRAFT with a wait-list (WL) condition with a nation-wide uptake in Sweden. A total of 94 CSOs to a treatment refusing IP, who described the IP according to DSM-IV criteria for alcohol dependence or abuse, were included in the study. iCRAFT consisted of five weekly administered therapist-guided modules with the following content: (a) improve CSOs' own mental health, (b) improve the CSOs skills in asking the IP to seek treatment, (c) positive communication skills training, (d) contingency management of IP drinking behavior. Main outcome measure was IPs initiative to seek treatment measured at 24weeks. Secondary outcomes were IP's daily alcohol consumption, CSOs mental health, quality of life and relational satisfaction. RESULTS: Of 94 participants, 15 CSOs reported IP treatment initiative during the study period. Of these, 10 belonged to the iCRAFT condition and five to the WL condition. The difference between conditions was nonsignificant, and the results were inconclusive. Participants in iCRAFT showed short-term improvements regarding depressive symptoms, quality of life and relational happiness. CONCLUSION: This study was unable to demonstrate substantial changes in the iCRAFT program regarding IP treatment seeking or CSO mental health. © The Author(s) 2020. • Modification of sawtooth oscillations with ICRF waves in the JET tokamak
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: RADIO FREQUENCY POWER IN PLASMAS. - : AIP. - 9780735404441 ; , s. 35-42
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Methods of modifying sawtooth oscillations using waves in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) in the JET tokamak are presented. Examples of sawtooth stabilization by ICRF-accelerated high-energy ions are shown, including experiments with ICRF-acceleration of 4He-beam ions to simulate the effects of fusion born alpha particles. With high power ICRF heating in low-density plasmas, fast ion stabilization of sawteeth is lost and a new type of small-period and small-amplitude sawteeth appears. ICRF-induced radial pinch with toroidally asymmetric waves is found to be useful in affecting the radial profile of the ICRF-driven fast ion populations and thereby their influence on sawteeth. Ion cyclotron current drive (ICCD) applied close to the sawtooth inversion radius is effective in modifying the sawtooth period. The latest achievements include the successful application of ICCD to shorten the fast-ion-induced long-period sawteeth and thereby avoid triggering of neoclassical tearing modes (NTMs).

  • Recent progress on JET towards the ITER reference mode of operation at high density
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion. - 0741-3335 .- 1361-6587. ; 43, s. A11-A30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent progress towards obtaining high density and high confinement in JET as required for the ITER reference scenario at Q = 10 is summarized. Plasmas with simultaneous confinement H-98(y.2) = 1 and densities up to n/n(Gw) similar to 1 are now routinely obtained. This has been possible (i) by using plasmas at high (delta similar to 0.5) and medium (delta similar to 0.3-0.4) triangularity with sufficient heating power to maintain Type I ELMs, (ii) with impurity seeded plasmas at high (delta similar to 0.5) and low (delta less than or equal to 0.2) triangularity, (iii) with an optimized pellet injection sequence, maintaining the energy confinement and raising the density, and (iv) by carefully tuning the gas puff rate leading to plasmas with peaked density profiles and good confinement at long time scales. These high performance discharges exhibit Type I ELMs, with a new and more favourable behaviour observed at high densities, requiring further studies. Techniques for a possible mitigation of these ELMs are discussed, and first promising results are obtained with impurity seeding in discharges at high triangularity. Scaling studies using the new data of this year show a strong dependence of confinement on upper triangularity, density and proximity to the Greenwald limit. Observed MHD instabilities and methods to avoid these in high density and high confinement plasmas are discussed.
