  • A longitudinal study on exercise habits and mental health among Swedish police students
  • 2023
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • IntroductionIn Sweden, police education should promote students’ physical activity and mental health. According to national goals, police students should be provided with sufficient conditions to develop and maintain advantageous exercise habits and tools to handle various mentally and physically demanding tasks. The national goals also state that students’ physical fitness must be better at graduation than what the requirements are for admission (see Krugly et al., 2022). Although the improvement of students’ physical fitness and mental health are national goals, there is a general lack of knowledge regarding: 1) police students physical and mental health, especially from a Swedish perspective; and 2) how well police education promotes students’ level of physical activity during education. Against this background, the aim is to explore police students’ mental health and level of physical activity during police education in Sweden.MethodsThe data derives from the largest project in Sweden on police students’ physical and mental health, and consists of longitudinal data on police students answers of a self-rated questionnaire about exercise habits and mental health (N = 785). The data used in this study was gathered between 2019–2021, and consisted of four data collection points, from two police educations in Sweden. The analysis was conducted in two steps. First, exploratory- and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to create scales for mental health orientation. Second, these scales, together with the variable exercise habits, were used as outcome variables in t-tests, X2 test and ANOVA. Effect size measurements were calculated and interpreted based on established guidelines.ResultsThe results show high psychometric support for two scales named positive health orientation and negative health orientation. Based on the scales and the variable of exercise habits, three primarily results emerge: 1) the levels of physical training for men decrease during education; 2) there are gender differences showing that women have a more negative health orientation; and, 3) the positive mental health orientation decreases during education for both men and women.DiscussionSwedish police education should prepare students for physically and mentally demanding work. However, as this study concludes, this tends to not be the case, especially given that both the level of physical activity and the positive mental health orientation decrease during education. This raises questions on whether the Swedish police education is doing “enough” to provide the students with adequate conditions for improving their mental and physical health.Krugly, S., Bjärsholm, D., Jansson, A., Rosendal Hansen, A., Hansson, O., Brehm, K., Datmo, A., Hafsteinsson Östenberg, A., & Vikman, J. • Achievement goals in youth sport and the influence of coaches, peers, and parents : a longitudinal study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Human Sport and Exercise. - Alicante : Universidad de Alicante. Grupo de Investigación en Ciencias de la Actividad Física y el Deporte. - 1988-5202. ; 15:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The first purpose of this study was to longitudinally examine achievement goals in youth sport. The second purpose was to examine the within-person effects of perceived motivational climates by coaches, peers, and parents on achievement goal orientation. Participants were 78 young student-athletes, representing a variety of sports. The student-athletes completed a multi-section questionnaire, six times over a three-year period, assessing the study variables. Multilevel modelling analysis revealed that both task orientation and ego orientation decreased for this age group over the three-year period. Furthermore, perceived task-involving peer climate was significantly and positively related to task orientation, and perceived ego-involving coach climate was significantly and positively related to ego orientation. The results from this study provides insights regarding developmental changes in achievement goals and the importance of certain social agents in that specific developmental stage.

  • Developmental changes in burnout perceptions among student-athletes : An achievement goal perspective
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology. - New York, NY : Taylor & Francis. - 1612-197X .- 1557-251X. ; 17:5, s. 509-520
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examined (a) the developmental trajectories of student-athlete burnout perceptions and (b) the within-person relationship between achievement goals and burnout perceptions. A three-year and six-wave longitudinal study was conducted with 78 student-athletes (30 young women and 48 young men, Mage at T1 = 12.7 years, SD = 0.44), attending a sport compulsory school. The Athlete Burnout Questionnaire and the Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire were used. The results from multilevel growth models revealed that burnout perceptions increased for this age group over the three-year period. Furthermore, task orientation was significantly and negatively related to a reduced sense of accomplishment and sport devaluation. The results from this study underline the advantage of considering developmental processes when studying burnout. Furthermore, by focusing on the within-person effect of achievement goals, this study provides findings that support a motivational approach to the longitudinally study of burnout propensity among young student-athletes. The current study suggests that sport school staff should be aware of their student-athletes’ burnout perceptions and that these could change over time. Results also highlights that task-oriented goals might help decrease burnout perceptions, specifically reduced sense of accomplishment and sport devaluation.

  • Körsimulator som pedagogiskt verktyg i polisutbildning
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (JoTL). - Malmö : Malmö universitet. - 2004-4097. ; 4:1

  • Relationships between ego-oriented peer climate, perceived competence and worry about sport performance : A longitudinal study of student-athletes
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Sport Science Review. - Bucharest : De Gruyter Open. - 2066-8732 .- 2069-7244. ; 25:3/4, s. 225-242
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using a sample of student-athletes’ (N=64) first year (seventh grade) enrolled at a school with a sport profile, the aim of this longitudinal study was to investigate (a) levels and changes as regards to worry about sport performance, perception of peer climate, and perceived competence; and (b) the relationship in levels and changes between these studied variables. The primary results from latent growth models (LGMs) and parallel process LGMs revealed that, during their first year, the student-athletes’ level of worry and perceived ego-oriented peer climate increased, whereas perceived competence decreased. Further, the results showed that perceived competence was negatively associated with worry at the beginning of the students’ first year. The slope of perceived ego-oriented peer climate was positively associated with the slope of worry. Future research in relation to the findings is discussed, and recommendations for future actions are given.

  • Simulator-Based Driving Training in Low-Speed Maneuvering for Swedish Police Students
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Studies in Policing. - : Universitetsforlaget. - 2703-7045. ; 9:1, s. 1-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Driving simulators are a common tool for researching and practicing driver behaviors. Despite this, research on the use of driving simulators within the basic police training in Nordic countries is sparse. Therefore, the purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to evaluate and compare students’ driving ability regarding low-speed maneuvering in tight spaces, during a limited part of their education, based on the type of training (simulator only, courtyard only, or 50/50) they receive. 83 Swedish police students, divided into four classes, attending their second semester at the police program, participated in the study. These four classes were divided into three different experimental groups. The simulation group (two classes, n = 41) only practiced driving using a driving simulator. The 50/50 group (one class, n = 22) practiced driving a vehicle in the courtyard and in the simulator. The courtyard group (one class, n = 20) only practiced driving a vehicle in a courtyard. The results showed that there were no statistically significant differences between type of training and performance on the examination regarding low-speed maneuvering in tight spaces. The findings are discussed in terms of their implications for the use of driving simulators in higher education, more specifically in police basic training programs.

  • Sports School : A Path to Athletic Burnout?
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Participation in organized youth sport could be one context for identity development. For some athletes this could be one part in a multifaceted identity but for others (e.g. young high level athletes) the social organization of highperformance sports could cause burnout in athletes due to a lack of control and identity constrictions (Coakley, 1992). One social organization of high performance youth sport that has since mid-90´s in Sweden grown in population is elementary sports schools (Ferry, Mechbach, & Larsson, 2013). Motives for this is, in hierarchical order; 1) to compete with other local schools and thus be able to recruit more pupils 2) to meet students' interests and thereby give them a more interesting school day 3) health benefits 4) that students perform better in other school subjects 5) to give students the chance to develop in their sports and prepare them for a future as an elite athlete and 6) that the school's resources in terms of premises has been an important motive for the start of the sport profile (Eliasson, Ferry & Olofsson, 2012).
