  • Luminescent and laser properties of Yb-Er:GdCa4O(BO3)3 : a new crystal for eye-safe 1.5-µm lasers
  • 2004
  • In: Applied physics. B, Lasers and optics (Print). - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0946-2171 .- 1432-0649. ; 79:5, s. 577-581
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We present for the first time 1.5-μm laser emission in Yb-Er:GdCa 4O(BO3)3 (GdCOB). The crystals were grown by the Czochralski method from platinum crucibles. Spectroscopic and laser tests of the crystals are described. A continuous-wave output power of 80 mW was achieved in a monolithic microchip cavity under laser-diode pumping.

  • New crystalline material for 1.5 μm lasers : Yb,Er - Activated GdCa 4O(BO3)3
  • 2004
  • In: Advanced Solid-State Photonics. - Washington, D.C. : Optics Info Base, Optical Society of America. - 1557527717 ; , s. 430-434
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A new crystalline medium for 1.5 μm Yb-Er lasers is proposed: GdCa 4O(BO3)3 (GdCOB). Its melting point allows crystal growth using platinum instead of iridium crucibles. Spectroscopic and laser tests of the new material are described. A maximum CW output power of 80 mW was achieved in a monolithic microchip cavity under laser diode pumping.

  • Are We Speaking the Same Language? Recommendations for a Definition and Categorization Framework for Plastic Debris
  • 2019
  • In: Environmental Science and Technology. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0013-936X .- 1520-5851. ; 53:3, s. 1039-1047
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Copyright © 2019 American Chemical Society. The accumulation of plastic litter in natural environments is a global issue. Concerns over potential negative impacts on the economy, wildlife, and human health provide strong incentives for improving the sustainable use of plastics. Despite the many voices raised on the issue, we lack a consensus on how to define and categorize plastic debris. This is evident for microplastics, where inconsistent size classes are used and where the materials to be included are under debate. While this is inherent in an emerging research field, an ambiguous terminology results in confusion and miscommunication that may compromise progress in research and mitigation measures. Therefore, we need to be explicit on what exactly we consider plastic debris. Thus, we critically discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a unified terminology, propose a definition and categorization framework, and highlight areas of uncertainty. Going beyond size classes, our framework includes physicochemical properties (polymer composition, solid state, solubility) as defining criteria and size, shape, color, and origin as classifiers for categorization. Acknowledging the rapid evolution of our knowledge on plastic pollution, our framework will promote consensus building within the scientific and regulatory community based on a solid scientific foundation.

  • Laser performance of Yb : GdCa4O(BO3)(3) compared to Yb : KGd(WO4)(2) under diode-bar pumping
  • 2007
  • In: Laser physics. - : Pleiades Publishing Ltd. - 1054-660X .- 1555-6611. ; 17:10, s. 1204-1208
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A study of Yb:GdCOB under diode-bar pumping has been performed and the results are compared, experimentally and theoretically, with Yb:KGW in the same cavity. An output power of 7.3 W and a slope efficiency of 57.4% were obtained. Self-frequency-doubling experiments are also discussed.

  • Passive Q-switching at 1.54 µm of an Er-Yb:GdCa4O(BO3)3 laser with a Co2+:MgAl2O4 saturable absorber
  • 2005
  • In: Applied physics. B, Lasers and optics (Print). - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0946-2171 .- 1432-0649. ; 81:1, s. 49-52
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We report, for the first time to our knowledge, efficient passive Q-switching of the 1.54-μm laser transition in an Er-Yb-doped crystalline medium. The laser configuration is a compact microchip design that is suitable for a range of practical applications such as range finding and lidar. The slope efficiency of 11.6%, pulse duration of 5-6 ns and average output power of 88 mW are all comparable with standard Er-Yb:glass lasers.
