  • Decline of the maize landrace cultivation in eastern Serbia
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Romanian Agricultural Research. - 1222-4227. ; 31, s. 11-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • State of maize landraces in the eastern Serbia was assessed through a field study and interviews withfarmers to determine both presence and extent of the maize landrace utilization. Results indicated that theextent of maize landraces cultivation in this region has significantly diminished during the last few decades, aswell as that some maize types seem to have disappeared. The landrace cultivation was strongly related totraditional agricultural practices. Farmers claimed that the maize landraces were more resistant tounfavourable environmental conditions. Efforts to conserve the genetic diversity of maize landraces should bedirected to investments into small-scale farming.

  • Diversity Of Maize (Zea Mays L.) Landraces In Eastern Serbia: Morphological And Storage Protein Characterization
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Maydica. - 0025-6153. ; 55, s. 231-238
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ten maize accessions (labelled as PF-ZM plus number) from Eastern Serbia were characterized by means of morphological and storage protein analysis. Estimation of 20 morphological traits was based on the IBP-GR Descriptors for maize. Zein composition was determined by the SDS gel electrophoresis. Variation of morphological characteristics among populations ranged from 4% for kernel width to 28% for kernel length. Accessions with the highest values of morphological traits were identified: PF-ZM 4 for ear diameter and kernel length, PF-ZM 5 for number of leaves and diameters of cob and rachis, PF-ZM 12 for leaf width and kernel thickness, PF-ZM 18 for number of kernels per row, PF-ZM 34 for number of ears per plant, venation index, number of rows per ear, and diameter of ear basis, and finally PF-ZM 37 for plant height, leaf length, and ear length. The gel electrophoresis showed the presence of five different fractions of zein proteins, which were classified as alpha-zeins and gamma-zeins. The alpha-zeins comprised on average 64 percent of the total registered zeins. Molecular weights of alpha-zein fractions identified on the gels were 17, 18, 21 and 24 kDa, and the only fraction identified as gamma-zein was 27 kDa.The assessment of morphological / productive traits of landraces, together with molecular markers, could represent a prerequisite for their protection. At the same time, such information could be of importance for both scientists and breeders.

  • Epifytiska växter i Sverige
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Fauna och flora. - 0014-8903. ; 110, s. 26-40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • A total of 122 vascular plant species arereported growing as epiphytes in Sweden. Wittrock(1894) recorded 105 species, 34 of which were foundalso in the present study. In all, 51 species wew foundin this study, 17 of which were new compared toWittrock (1894).All observations were photo-documented, andthis material can be found in the form of pdf-fileson the Fauna & Flora website http://www.artdata.slu.se/FaunaochFlora/default.asp. Table 3 presents alist of all (122) scientific names in alphabetical order. In accordance with Wittrock (1894), the treesharbouring epiphytes were divided into the followingthree sections: stem-base b 0.1-0.6m above theground, mid-section m 0.6-2m above the ground, oron the unbranched trunk, and crown section k ≥2mabove the ground, or in the tree-crown.When more observations are added, it will probablybecome evident that most epiphytic species cangrow in all three sections. The majority of the epiphytic species (66) are perennials, and six of them are sporophytes. Three speciesare biennial, and 29 are annuals; mainly summer annuals, but also a few winter annuals. 13 shrub speciesand 11 tree species were found as epiphytes. Themost common epiphytic species was, in fact, rowanSorbus aucuparia. The tree species harbouring the largestnumber of epiphytes (31 species) was maple Acerplatanoides. The question of how these species came to growepiphytically is also discussed. None of them is a trueepiphyte, adapted to grow in trees. Evidently some ofthe species are wind-dispersed, whereas many othersare transported by animals (notably ants, squirrels andbirds).
