  • Consistent response of bird populations to climate change on two continents
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 352:6281, s. 84-87
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Global climate change is a major threat to biodiversity. Large-scale analyses have generally focused on the impacts of climate change on the geographic ranges of species and on phenology, the timing of ecological phenomena. We used long-term monitoring of the abundance of breeding birds across Europe and the United States to produce, for both regions, composite population indices for two groups of species: those for which climate suitability has been either improving or declining since 1980. The ratio of these composite indices, the climate impact indicator (CII), reflects the divergent fates of species favored or disadvantaged by climate change. The trend in CII is positive and similar in the two regions. On both continents, interspecific and spatial variation in population abundance trends are well predicted by climate suitability trends.

  • Common psychiatric and metabolic comorbidity of adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder : A population-based cross-sectional study
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : Public Library of Science. - 1932-6203. ; 13:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is often comorbid with other psychiatric conditions in adults. Yet, less is known about its relationship with common metabolic disorders and how sex and ageing affect the overall comorbidity patterns of adult ADHD. We aimed to examine associations of adult ADHD with several common psychiatric and metabolic conditions. Through the linkage of multiple Swedish national registers, 5,551,807 adults aged 18 to 64 years and living in Sweden on December 31, 2013 were identified and assessed for clinical diagnoses of adult ADHD, substance use disorder (SUD), depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and hypertension. Logistic regression models and regression standardization method were employed to obtain estimates of prevalence, prevalence difference (PD), and prevalence ratio (PR). All comorbid conditions of interest were more prevalent in adults with ADHD (3.90% to 44.65%) than in those without (0.72% to 4.89%), with the estimated PRs being over nine for psychiatric conditions (p < 0.001) and around two for metabolic conditions (p < 0.001). Sex differences in the prevalence of comorbidities were observed among adults with ADHD. Effect modification by sex was detected on the additive scale and/or multiplicative scale for the associations of adult ADHD with all comorbidities. ADHD remained associated with all comorbidities in older adults aged 50 to 64 when all conditions were assessed from age 50 onwards. The comorbidity patterns of adult ADHD underscore the severity and clinical complexity of the disorder. Clinicians should remain vigilant for a wide range of psychiatric and metabolic problems in ADHD affected adults of all ages and both sexes.

  • Unravelling migration connectivity reveals unsustainable hunting of the declining ortolan bunting
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Science Advances. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 2375-2548. ; 5:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In France, illegal hunting of the endangered ortolan bunting Emberiza hortulana has been defended for the sake of tradition and gastronomy. Hunters argued that ortolan buntings trapped in southwest France originate from large and stable populations across the whole of Europe. Yet, the European Commission referred France to the Court of Justice of the European Union (EU) in December 2016 for infringements to legislation (IP/16/4213). To better assess the impact of hunting in France, we combined Pan-European data from archival light loggers, stable isotopes, and genetics to determine the migration strategy of the species across continents. Ortolan buntings migrating through France come from northern and western populations, which are small, fragmented and declining. Population viability modeling further revealed that harvesting in southwest France is far from sustainable and increases extinction risk. These results provide the sufficient scientific evidence for justifying the ban on ortolan harvesting in France.

  • A molecular dynamics study of the effect of side-chains on mobility in a polymer host
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Solid State Ionics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-2738. ; 176:39-40, s. 3041-3044
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect on polymer dynamics of adding methoxy-terminated poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) side-chains with different lengths and separations to an amorphous long-chain PEO backbone has been studied by Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation at 293 K and 330 K. The study is seen as having a direct general relevance to the optimal design of ion-conducting polymer hosts for both Li-ion battery and polymer fuel-cell applications. The MD box used contains a long-chain PEO backbone to which side-chains comprising 3, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 15 EO units are added. The chosen separations between the side-chains are 5, 10, 15, 20 and 50 EO units. All potentials used to describe these systems are taken from earlier work (J. Mater. Chem., 13 (2003) 214). The overall mobility of the polymer host system is found to have both minima and maxima at both temperatures for side-chain lengths in the range 6–9 EO units. This is almost totally independent of side-chain separation at 293 K, while the situation is more complex at 330 K.
