  • Palaeoclimate constraints on the impact of 2 °C anthropogenic warming and beyond

    • Over the past 3.5 million years, there have been several intervals when climate conditions were warmer than during the pre-industrial Holocene. Although past intervals of warming were forced differently than future anthropogenic change, such periods can provide insights into potential future climate impacts and ecosystem feedbacks, especially over centennial-to-millennial timescales that are often not covered by climate model simulations. Our observation-based synthesis of the understanding of past intervals with temperatures within the range of projected future warming suggests that there is a low risk of runaway greenhouse gas feedbacks for global warming of no more than 2 °C. However, substantial regional environmental impacts can occur. A global average warming of 1–2 °C with strong polar amplification has, in the past, been accompanied by significant shifts in climate zones and the spatial distribution of land and ocean ecosystems. Sustained warming at this level has also led to substantial reductions of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets, with sea-level increases of at least several metres on millennial timescales. Comparison of palaeo observations with climate model results suggests that, due to the lack of certain feedback processes, model-based climate projections may underestimate long-term warming in response to future radiative forcing by as much as a factor of two, and thus may also underestimate centennial-to-millennial-scale sea-level rise.

  • Sequential chemotherapy/radiotherapy was comparable with concurrent chemoradiotherapy for stage I/II NK/T-cell lymphoma

    • Background: In stage I/II natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphoma, concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) had previously been shown to result in superior outcome compared with anthracycline-containing regimens, which have since been considered ineffective. The role of CCRT in comparison with approaches employing nonanthracycline-containing chemotherapy (CT) and sequential radiotherapy (RT) in such patients remains to be defined. Patients and methods: Three hundred and three untreated patients (207 men, 96 women; median age: 51, 18-86 years) with stage I/II NK/T-cell lymphoma who had received nonanthracycline-containing regimens were collected from an international consortium and retrospectively analyzed. Treatment included single modality (CT and RT), sequential modalities (CT+RT; RT+CT) and concurrent modalities (CCRT; CCRT+CT). The impact of clinicopathologic parameters and types of treatment on complete response (CR) rate, progression-free-survival (PFS) and overall-survival (OS) was evaluated. Results: For CR, stage (P=0.027), prognostic index for NK/T-cell lymphoma (PINK) (P=0.026) and types of initial treatment (P=0.011) were significant prognostic factors on multivariate analysis. On Cox regression analysis, ECOG performance score (P=0.021) and PINK-EBV DNA (PINK-E) (P=0.002) significantly impacted on PFS; whereas ECOG performance score (P=0.008) and stage (P<0.001) significantly impacted on OS. For comparing CCRT6CT and sequential CT+RT, CCRT6CT patients (n=190) were similar to sequential CT+RT patients (n=54) in all evaluated clinicopathologic parameters except two significantly superior features (higher proportion of undetectable circulating EBV DNA on diagnosis and lower PINK-E scores). Despite more favorable pre-treatment characteristics, CCRT6CT patients had CR rate, PFS and OS comparable with sequential CT+RT patients on multivariate and Cox regression analyses. Conclusions: In stage I/II NK/T-cell lymphomas, when effective chemotherapeutic regimens were used, CCRT and sequential CT+RT gave similar outcome.

  • Giant Overlap between the Magnetic and Superconducting Phases of CeAu2Si2 under Pressure

    • High pressure provides a powerful means for exploring unconventional superconductivity which appears mostly on the border of magnetism. Here, we report the discovery of pressure-induced heavy-fermion superconductivity up to 2.5 K in the antiferromanget CeAu2Si2 (T-N approximate to 10 K). Remarkably, the magnetic and superconducting phases are found to overlap across an unprecedentedly wide pressure interval from 11.8 to 22.3 GPa. Moreover, both the bulk T-c and T-M are strongly enhanced when increasing the pressure from 16.7 to 20.2 GPa. T-c reaches a maximum at a pressure slightly below p(c) approximate to 22.5 GPa, at which magnetic order disappears. Furthermore, the scaling behavior of the resistivity provides evidence for a continuous delocalization of the Ce 4f electrons associated with a critical end point lying just above p(c). We show that the maximum T-c of CeAu2Si2 actually occurs at almost the same unit-cell volume as that of CeCu2Si2 and CeCu2Ge2, and when the Kondo and crystal-field splitting energies become comparable. Dynamical mean-filed theory calculations suggest that the peculiar behavior in pressurized CeAu2Si2 might be related to its Ce-4f orbital occupancy. Our results not only provide a unique example of the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism, but also underline the role of orbital physics in understanding Ce-based heavy-fermion systems.

  • Quantification of biogenic silica by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIRS) in marine sediments

    • Due to the major role played by diatoms in the marine biological pump, opal/biogenic silica (bSi) has a strong potential as a proxy for paleoproduction reconstructions. Here, we present a detailed evaluation of the independent Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIRS) calibration introduced by Meyer-Jacob et al. (2014a), which is based on synthetic sediment mixtures with known concentrations of bSi and the application of partial least squares (PLS) regression, for the determination of bSi in marine sediments. To test the robustness of the FTIRS calibration for marine samples we selected 199 globally distributed samples, with available wet chemically inferred bSi concentrations and compared the results of both methods. We observe that the spectral characteristics in marine samples are comparable to those reported for a synthetic FTIR spectrum composed solely of spectral features in quartz, biogenic silica, and calcite. FTIRS-inferred and wet-chemically measured bSi concentrations for the set of 199 marine sediment samples are strongly correlated (R-2 = 0.87; RMSE = 5.27%). Together with the high reproducibility of bSi values by the independent calibration our results corroborate the applicability of the independent FTIRS bSi calibration for quantification in marine samples. This together with the succinct sample preparation procedure, rapid analysis, reduced consumable and machine maintenance costs makes FTIRS a powerful and robust alternative for the quantitative analysis of bSi in marine sediments.
