  • Coal tar-containing asphalt : Resource or hazardous waste?
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Industrial Ecology. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 1088-1980 .- 1530-9290. ; 11:4, s. 99-116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Coal tar was used in Sweden for the production of asphalt and for the drenching of stabilization gravel until 1973. The tar has high concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), some of which may be strongly carcinogenic. Approximately 20 million tonnes of tar-containing asphalt is present in the public roads in Sweden. Used asphalt from rebuilding can be classified as hazardous waste according to the Swedish Waste Act. The cost of treating the material removed as hazardous waste can be very high due to the large amount that has to be treated, and the total environmental benefit is unclear. The transport of used asphalt to landfill or combustion will affect other environmental targets. The present project, based on three case studies of road projects in Sweden, evaluates the consequences of four scenarios for handling the material: reuse, landfill, biological treatment, and incineration. The results show that reuse of the coal tar-containing materials in new road construction is the most favorable alternative in terms of cost, material use, land use, energy consumption, and air emissions.

  • Prototyping Futures
  • 2012
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Prototyping Futures gives you a glimpse of what collaborating with academia might look like. Medea and its co-partners share their stories about activities happening at the research centre – projects, methods, tools, and approaches – what challenges lie ahead, and how these can be tackled. Examples of highlighted topics include: What is a living lab and how does it work? What are the visions behind the Connectivity Lab at Medea? And, how can prototyping-methods be used when sketching scenarios for sustainable futures? Other topics are: What is the role of the body when designing technology? What is collaborative media and how can this concept help us understand contemporary media practices? Prototyping Futures also discusses the open-hardware platform Arduino, and the concepts of open data and the Internet of Things, raising questions on how digital media and connected devices can contribute to more sustainable lifestyles, and a better world.

  • Effect of vibration amplitude on vapor cavitation in journal bearings
  • 1986
  • Ingår i: Nordic Symposium on Tribology, Lulea, Sweden, 15-18 Jun. 1986. - Luleå : Högskolan i Luleå.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Computational movies were used to analyze the formation and collapse of vapor cavitation bubbles in a submerged journal bearing. The effect of vibration amplitude on vapor cavitation was studied for a journal undergoing circular whirl. The boundary conditions were implemented using Elrod's algorithm, which conserves mass flow through the cavitation bubble as well as through the oil-film region of the bearing. The vibration amplitudes for the different cases studied resulted in maximum eccentricity ratios ranging from 0.4 to 0.9. The minimum eccentricity ratio reached in each case was 0.1. For the least vibration amplitude studied in which the eccentricity ratio varied between 0.1 and 0.4, no vapor cavitation occurred. The largest vibration amplitude (i.e., eccentricity ratios of 0.1 to 0.9) resulted in vapor cavitation present 76 percent of one complete orbit.

For the case in which 0.1 ε < 0.9, vapour cavitation was present for 76% of the total time

  • Premature truncation of a novel protein, RD3, exhibiting subnuclear localization is associated with retinal degeneration
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Human Genetics. - 0002-9297. ; 79:6, s. 1059-1070
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The rd3 mouse is one of the oldest identified models of early-onset retinal degeneration. Using the positional candidate approach, we have identified a C -> T substitution in a novel gene, Rd3, that encodes an evolutionarily conserved protein of 195 amino acids. The rd3 mutation results in a predicted stop codon after residue 106. This change is observed in four rd3 lines derived from the original collected mice but not in the nine wild-type mouse strains that were examined. Rd3 is preferentially expressed in the retina and exhibits increasing expression through early postnatal development. In transiently transfected COS-1 cells, the RD3-fusion protein shows subnuclear localization adjacent to promyelocytic leukemia-gene-product bodies. The truncated mutant RD3 protein is detectable in COS-1 cells but appears to get degraded rapidly. To explore potential association of the human RD3 gene at chromosome 1q32 with retinopathies, we performed a mutation screen of 881 probands from North America, India, and Europe. In addition to several alterations of uncertain significance, we identified a homozygous alteration in the invariant G nucleotide of the RD3 exon 2 donor splice site in two siblings with Leber congenital amaurosis. This mutation is predicted to result in premature truncation of the RD3 protein, segregates with the disease, and is not detected in 121 ethnically matched control individuals. We suggest that the retinopathy-associated RD3 protein is part of subnuclear protein complexes involved in diverse processes, such as transcription and splicing.

  • Elastohydrodynamic lubrication of rectangular contacts
  • 1983
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • An isothermal elastohydrodynamically lubricated rectangular contact was evaluated numerically. This required the simultaneous solution of the elasticity and Reynolds equations. In the elasticity analysis the contact zone was divided into equal rectangular areas, and it was assumed that a uniform pressure was applied over each area. The elastohydrodynamic lubrication theory thus developed was used to investigate the influence of the dimensionless speed, load, and materials parameters on minimum film thickness. Ten cases were used in obtaining the minimum film thickness formula. Plots are shown that indicate the details of the pressure distribution, film shape, and flow. The characteristic pressure spike is clearly in evidence as is the parallel film shape through the central portion of the contact, with a minimum film thickness occurring near the outlet of the contact.
