Beyond Moral Teaching : Financial Literacy as Citizenship Education

- This thesis explores what financial literacy is, what financial literacy becomes and what financial literacy could become within the context of a citizenship education such as the Swedish upper secondary subject of social studies. Financial literacy does not intuitively converge with social sciences which leaves social studies teachers to both teach and realise financial literacy. Thus, teachers become co-creators of financial literacy as a school subject. This thesis explores this process via two different studies resulting in four research articles. In the first study, semi-structured interviews – analysed through PCK – are used to explore the perceptions of Swedish social studies teachers in upper secondary school regarding financial literacy teaching and learning. The findings include differences between experienced and novice teachers regarding which content knowledge and pedagogical approaches they use. However, all teachers express difficulties fitting financial literacy into social studies, mainly due to a perception of financial literacy primarily being a private matter, along with the unclear relationship between financial and societal issues. The second study is designed as a financial literacy teaching intervention. Students’ views on a financial dilemma are analysed using citizenship conceptions and threshold concepts. The findings are used to discuss design principles for financial literacy teaching. Salient conclusions in the thesis include citizenship education being able to frame financial literacy and provide epistemic features which can make financial literacy more teachable and learnable. It is hoped that the results from this thesis can inform future financial literacy teaching design as well as policy discussion related to financial literacy teaching and learning contextualised with another subject, especially citizenship education.

Oxycodone-Related Deaths : The Significance of Pharmacokinetic and Pharmacodynamic Drug Interactions

- Background and Objectives Oxycodone is frequently prescribed as well as detected in postmortem cases. Concurrent use of pharmacodynamically or pharmacokinetically interacting drugs can cause adverse effects or even fatal intoxication. The aims of this study were to investigate differences in prescriptions for and toxicological findings of pharmacodynamically and pharmacokinetically interacting drugs in fatal oxycodone-related intoxications and other causes of death. We also aimed to investigate the differences in prevalence of oxycodone prescriptions, and the detected postmortem oxycodone concentrations between fatal oxycodone-related intoxications and other causes of death. Methods Forensic autopsy cases (2012-2018) where oxycodone was identified in femoral blood (n = 1236) were included. Medical history and prescription data were retrieved from national databases and linked to the forensic toxicology findings. Results Oxycodone-related deaths were found to have higher blood concentrations of oxycodone (median 0.30 mu g/g vs. 0.05 mu g/g) and were less likely to have a prescription for oxycodone (OR 0.62) compared to nonintoxication deaths. Pharmacodynamically interacting drugs were prescribed in 79% and found in blood in 81% of the cases. Pharmacokinetically interacting drugs were rarely prescribed (1%). Oxycodone-related deaths were more likely to have prescriptions for a pharmacodynamically interacting drug (OR 1.7) and more often have co-findings of one or multiple pharmacodynamically interacting drugs (OR 5.6). Conclusion The results suggest that combined use of oxycodone and pharmacodynamically interacting drugs is associated with oxycodone-related death and that non-medical use of oxycodone is a potential risk factor for oxycodone-related intoxication.

Refining a subsidiary evolution framework: clarifying key concepts

- Purpose While the evolution of subsidiaries has received considerable research attention, the framework for understanding it has not evolved much since the late 1990s. The purpose of this paper is to add both clarity and depth to the work on the foundations for - as well as the processes of - capability creation and development as a subsidiary evolves. Design/methodology/approach This conceptual paper takes as its point of departure the micro-foundation literature, with a specific emphasis on the capability development literature. To describe capability creation and development, both the resource-based view and the resource management perspective are used here. Findings The paper adds a conceptual layer to the drivers of subsidiary evolution. To add further clarity regarding how capabilities are actually formed, the resources for capability creation and development are specified herein as entities, abilities and capacity. Arguments are also presented for why capabilities ought to be viewed as patterned behavior to decrease the terminological ambiguity surrounding the concept of capabilities. The process of capability creation and development with an emphasis on learning is brought forward. Further, capability typologies, in terms of substantive, managerial and dynamic capabilities, are presented to add specificity to the kinds of capabilities that are created and developed within a subsidiary. Originality/value Clarifying the concept of capability and how capabilities are formed by using advancements in the literature is important to add precision to the literature on the evolution of subsidiaries.

Unfolding Evolutionary Growth Within a Subsidiary: The Case of a Sales Subsidiary in the Middle East

- Subsidiaries are important entities in multinational corporations and are typically established with predetermined business responsibilities. A subsidiary responds to actors in the internal network (e.g. , HQs and other subsidiaries) as well as actors in the external network (e.g. , customers) within the local environment. Over time, subsidiaries take on new business responsibilities as a result of their own agendas. Activities conducted to fulfill business responsibilities are part of a subsidiary’s internal processes. These internal processes are dependent on resources that are bundled into capabilities , which are thereafter leveraged toward actors. How these internal processes develop as a subsidiary evol utionarily grows through the creation and development of capabilities over time has received limited research attention. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to increase our understanding of how the internal processes of an evolutionarily growing subsidi ary unfold. The evolutionary growth of a subsidiary requires continuous resource management to enable the creation and development of capabilities. Capabilities refer to a set of complex patterned activities that, through the act of carrying out these acti vities, allow for enhanced value to be developed. Thus, the study investigates how resources are managed and how capabilities are created and developed as a subsidiary evolutionarily grows. In order to pursue a study that unfolds the internal processes of an evolutionar il y growing subsidiary, a punctuated longitudinal case study was conducted at a sales subsidiary in the Middle East. Interviews were conducted at HQs, at the subsidiary, and with distributors and customers, which constituted various elements of the subsidiary’s external and internal network. The findings from this study reveal how an evolutionar il y growing subsidiary develops managerial and operational capabilities that, when combined, establish a proactive approach to the subsidiary’s busines s responsibilities. The proactive approach functions as a countermeasure to the influence of external and internal actors on the subsidiary’s business responsibilities. Furthermore, the development of a proactive approach determines how activities undertak en in the subsidiary result in the means to address uncertainty rather than merely being aware of uncertainty. The contributions to the subsidiary evolutionary literature include how and what capabilities are formed (managerial and operational). The creat ion and development of capabilities also contribute to how a subsidiary’s influence in and interdependence on the internal and external networks increases. Finally , this study contribut es to the subsidiary evolutionary literature and the resource management literature through the creation of a model that portrays how a subsidiary as a business unit evolutionarily grows by emphasizing its internal processes , which are constituted by the interdependent structuring, bundling, and lev eraging of managerial and operational capabilities.

A Neoliberal Media Welfare State? : The Swedish Media System in Transformation

- The concept of the Media Welfare State describes Nordic specificity in how media are organised and how they serve a lively and inclusive democracy. This article engages in a dialogue in regards to the contention that this media system has persisted in the midst of rapid social change. We synthesise previous research and documented changes in media policy in Sweden, covering the last three decades, to show the ways in which the Swedish media system has undergone significant transformations. Media use is becoming more polarised and connected to social class. The state is retreating from its involvement in media policy; consequently, the press and public service media are facing unprecedented challenges. Finally, the “consensual” relation between media companies and the state, which is said to be typical for the media welfare state, no longer characterises the media market. While some of the features of the media welfare state system remain in Sweden, the current media system is best characterised as a neoliberal media welfare state. The article discusses tensions and conflicts in the existing model and possible future developments.

- Social class is one of the most enduring concepts in the social sciences and is associated with many of the key themes and topics across multiple disciplines. Thus, there are many uses to which the concept of social class in media and communication can be put. The ambition of this special issue is to offer a glimpse into the heterogeneity of its uses in the field. While attuned differently in relation to the various approaches and definitions of class, the eight contributions to this special issue collectively focus on the relationship between media and class. One of the ambitions of this special issue is to report on some of the current Nordic scholarship in this growing field of research and to highlight the particularities of the relationship between class, inequality and media in this region. While the special issue also includes contributions from other regions, the main focus is on social class in the Nordic countries.This introductory article begins with a discussion on the concept of social class and its analytical relevance in the contemporary social landscape. We detail the relationship between media and class as manifested in a growing body of research, followed by a brief presentation of the individual contributions to this special issue. Finally, we identify the road ahead and potential research areas for scholars of media and communication concerned about class and social inequality in the twenty-first century.
