  • Angiomotin regulates endothelial cell migration during embryonic angiogenesis
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Genes & Development. - : Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. - 0890-9369 .- 1549-5477. ; 21:16, s. 2055-2068
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The development of the embryonic vascular system into a highly ordered network requires precise control over the migration and branching of endothelial cells (ECs). We have previously identified angiomotin (Amot) as a receptor for the angiogenesis inhibitor angiostatin. Furthermore, DNA vaccination targeting Amot inhibits angiogenesis and tumor growth. However, little is known regarding the role of Amot in physiological angiogenesis. We therefore investigated the role of Amot in embryonic neovascularization during zebrafish and mouse embryogenesis. Here we report that knockdown of Amot in zebrafish reduced the number of filopodia of endothelial tip cells and severely impaired the migration of intersegmental vessels. We further show that 75% of Amot knockout mice die between embryonic day 11 (E11) and E11.5 and exhibit severe vascular insufficiency in the intersomitic region as well as dilated vessels in the brain. Furthermore, using ECs differentiated from embryonic stem (ES) cells, we demonstrate that Amot-deficient cells have intact response to vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in regard to differentiation and proliferation. However, the chemotactic response to VEGF was abolished in Amot-deficient cells. We provide evidence that Amot is important for endothelial polarization during migration and that Amot controls Rac1 activity in endothelial and epithelial cells. Our data demonstrate a critical role for Amot during vascular patterning and endothelial polarization.

  • The use of bathymetric data in society and science : A review from the Baltic Sea
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bathymetry, the underwater topography, is a fundamental property of oceans, seas and lakes. As such it is important for a wide range of applications, like physical oceanography, marine geology, geophysics and biology or the administration of marine resources. The exact requirements users may have regarding bathymetric data are, however, unclear. Here, the results of a questionnaire survey and a literature review are presented, concerning the use of Baltic Sea bathymetric data in research and for societal needs. It is demonstrated that there is a great need for detailed bathymetric data, which cannot be satisfied by the digital bathymetric models publicly available, despite of the abundance of high quality bathymetric data that are produced for safety of navigation purposes. Our study shows that DBMs based on such data could substantially improve the base data for administrative decision making as well as the possibilities for marine research in the Baltic Sea.

  • Probing the liquid–gas coexistence in p+Xe reactions from 200 to 1400 MeV
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 644:4, s. 228-231
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The nuclear equation of state (EOS) is probed from statistical parameters, determined in an excitation function experiment on p + Xe-nat reactions at 200-1400 MeV. Total charge (Z) distributions follow a cascade-[multi]fragmentation-evaporation (CFEM) model well. The caloric curve in regions supposedly dominated by fast processes is compatible with a pure statistical multifragmentation (SMM) process, where the temperature (T)-excitation energy (epsilon*) relation starts in the Fermi liquid phase and progresses into a liquid/gas coexistence region, where it remains up to 1400 MeV. A local peak in T at epsilon* = 2.1 MeV agrees with the idea of sudden fragmentation.

  • Exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers and tetrabromobisphenol A among computer technicians.
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Chemosphere. - 1879-1298. ; 46:5, s. 709-716
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigates exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), which are used as flame retardants in electronic equipment, in a group of technicians with intense computer work. Thirteen PBDE congeners and TBBPA were quantified in serum from 19 computer technicians. Previously investigated groups of hospital cleaners with no computer experience, and clerks working full-time at computer screens were used for comparison. The computer technicians had serum concentrations of BDE-153, BDE-183 and BDE-209 that were five times higher than those reported among hospital cleaners and computer clerks. The median levels observed among the computer technicians were 4.1, 1.3, and 1.6 pmol/g lipid weight, respectively. In contrast, for BDE-47 there was no difference between the computer technicians and the others. BDE-100, BDE-203, and three structurally unidentified octa-BDEs and three nona-BDEs, were present in almost all samples from the computer technicians. Further, TBBPA was detected in 8 out of 10 samples. The levels of BDE-153, BDE-183, and one of the octa-BDEs were positively correlated with duration of computer work among technicians. On a group level an exposure gradient was observed, from the least exposed cleaners to the clerks, and to the highest exposed group of computer technicians. A dose (duration of computer work)-response relationship among computer technicians was demonstrated for some higher brominated PBDE congeners. Thus, it is evident that PBDEs used in computers and electronics, including the fully brominated BDE-209, contaminate the work environment and accumulate in the workers tissues.

  • Experiences of micturition problems, indwelling catheter treatment and sexual life consequences in men with prostate cancer
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Journal of Advanced Nursing. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0309-2402 .- 1365-2648. ; 31:1, s. 59-67
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Men with prostate cancer (n=25) were interviewed, focusing on experiences of micturition problems, indwelling catheter treatment and sexual life consequences. Narrations were found to be practical and technical descriptions rather than emotional, and experiences were described with reduction and negligence regarding personal well-being and the impact of problems. Phenomenological-hermeneutic analysis was used and findings ordered in subthemes and themes of meaning. Micturition problems, catheter treatment and sexual life problems were all phenomena that radically affected the clients’ autonomy and life quality and changed the life continuum. Impact from the disease was either accepted or not and related to what had already been borne in life. Experiences were linked together, each of them giving rise to feelings of physical deterioration and fear of ridicule, and hidden from others. Maintaining self-image and social role was important and connected with the degree of perceived deprivation of life content. Responsibility for medical decisions was left to professionals while everyday problems with micturition, catheters and sexual life were regarded as the men’s sole responsibility. Findings were interpreted to mean that comparing the personal situation with that of others worse off made the life situation look better. The clinical implication of this study was that because the men came forward with their problems when given time to talk in their own way these areas should be given time and interest in the nursing care. Interpretation did not provide a unified picture of problems. Thus, nurses will have to seek men’s individual experience actively and give legitimacy to patients’ problems by opening up opportunities to speak about otherwise concealed problems. Then it may be possible to provide solutions that may ease the men’s burdens.
