  • Hur kan ekonomi göras begripligt? : En studie om villkor för kraftfull ekonomiundervisning i samhällskunskap
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis seeks to understand what constitutes important economics knowledge from a disciplinary perspective and how such knowledge is recontextualized in textbooks and teacher training to become teachable to social studies students in Sweden’s upper secondary schools. It consists of four substudies: two covering disciplinary economics knowledge and two covering preservice social studies teachers. The first and second substudies focus on disciplinary economics knowledge. The first substudy, which was based on an online questionnaire for Swedish economics scholars at higher education institutions, shows that six economics terms/principles are especially important for people to understand. Such knowledge may be considered powerful economics knowledge. The second substudy demonstrates that there are great variations in the extent to which powerful economics terms appear in Swedish social studies textbooks and in how the language used shifts between everyday and scientific language. There is a risk that not all learners are given equal preconditions to develop economics knowledge through social studies textbooks. The third and fourth substudies focus on how preservice social studies teachers develop the ability to teach economic knowledge and show that students’ individual pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) depends on theoretical and practical studies. Students are unconfident about their economics knowledge, which may negatively affect their willingness and ability to teach economics when they become in-service social studies teachers.Overall, there appears to be a problem with the recontextualization of economics knowledge in Swedish social studies textbooks and with economics education for preservice social studies teachers. This may negatively affect economics education. As a result, it is important to strengthen preservice social studies teachers’ economics knowledge through increased economics content during teacher training. The importance of imparting powerful economics knowledge and shifting between everyday and scientific language in textbooks and during teaching needs to be highlighted for policymakers, textbook authors, and teacher educators.

  • The effect of robot interventions on sleep in adults : a systematic review and network meta-analysis
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine (JCSM). - : American Academy of Sleep Medicine. - 1550-9389 .- 1550-9397. ; 18:7, s. 1877-1884
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Study Objectives: Robotic pets or companion robots have demonstrated positive effects on several emotional and physiological factors in humans. Robots could constitute a complementary or alternative method to treat sleep problems, but individual studies on robots' effectiveness regarding sleep show mixed results. The aim of the current study was to compare the effects of robots, plush toys, and treatment as usual on sleep in adults. Methods: The current study is a systematic review and frequentist network meta-analysis of all randomized and cluster randomized controlled trials comparing the effects of robots, plush toys, and treatment as usual on total sleep time in adults. Results: Four studies were included in the analysis. Three studies were considered to have a high risk of bias, whereas one was rated with some concerns. The studies comprised 381 participants. These participants were older adults, with or without dementia, living in nursing homes. The total sleep time was the only common sleep measure included in all 4 studies. The network meta-analysis showed no statistically significant differences between the 3 experimental groups. Conclusions: The robot interventions were not found to have positive effects on total sleep time in older adults compared with plush toys or treatment as usual. Future studies should use robots especially made to target sleep, include a thorough screening of the participants, and exclude people with adequate sleep, select appropriate sleep measures, and report the results appropriately for future meta-analyses.

  • Beyond Moral Teaching : Financial Literacy as Citizenship Education
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis explores what financial literacy is, what financial literacy becomes and what financial literacy could become within the context of a citizenship education such as the Swedish upper secondary subject of social studies.  Financial literacy does not intuitively converge with social sciences which leaves social studies teachers to both teach and realise financial literacy. Thus, teachers become co-creators of financial literacy as a school subject. This thesis explores this process via two different studies resulting in four research articles. In the first study, semi-structured interviews – analysed through PCK – are used to explore the perceptions of Swedish social studies teachers in upper secondary school regarding financial literacy teaching and learning. The findings include differences between experienced and novice teachers regarding which content knowledge and pedagogical approaches they use. However, all teachers express difficulties fitting financial literacy into social studies, mainly due to a perception of financial literacy primarily being a private matter, along with the unclear relationship between financial and societal issues. The second study is designed as a financial literacy teaching intervention. Students’ views on a financial dilemma are analysed using citizenship conceptions and threshold concepts. The findings are used to discuss design principles for financial literacy teaching. Salient conclusions in the thesis include citizenship education being able to frame financial literacy and provide epistemic features which can make financial literacy more teachable and learnable. It is hoped that the results from this thesis can inform future financial literacy teaching design as well as policy discussion related to financial literacy teaching and learning contextualised with another subject, especially citizenship education.

  • Universities as engines for regional growth? : Using the synthetic control method to analyze the effects of research universities
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Regional Science and Urban Economics. - : Elsevier. - 0166-0462 .- 1879-2308. ; 60, s. 198-207
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Are research universities important for regional growth and development? We study the impact on the regional economy of granting research university status to three former university colleges in three different regions in Sweden. We analyze the development in the treated regions compared to a set of control regions that are created using the synthetic control method. We find small or no effects on the regional economy. Our findings cast doubt on the effectiveness of research universities in fostering regional growth and development We contribute to the existing research by using a more credible identification strategy in assessing the effects of universities on the regional economy compared to what has usually been used in previous studies.

  • Copayments and physicians visits: A panel data study of Swedish regions 2003-2012
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Health Policy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-8510 .- 1872-6054. ; 120:9, s. 1095-1099
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: This paper analyzes how primary care physician visits are affected by the level of copayment in Sweden. Data source: We use data between the years 2003-2012 from 21 Swedish health care regions that have the mandate to set their own level of copayment. The copayment per visit varies between 10 and 20 for these years and regions. Study design: Our strategy to identify the causal effect and deal with unobserved endogeneity of price changes on physician visits is based on a panel data model using fixed effects to control for region and time and regional-variation in time trends. Principal finding: We cannot reject that the copayment has no statistical or economic effect of significance, and we estimate the "zero effect" with very high precision. Conclusion: In a setting with sub-national regions with autonomy to set copayments the results points to that the copayment is not an important predictor for the number of health care visits. The result is in line with some previous studies on European data where the range of copayments used tends to be relatively low. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Dividing the pie in the eco-social state : Exploring the relationship between public support for environmental and welfare policies
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Environment and Planning C: Politics and Space. - : Sage Publications. - 2399-6544 .- 2399-6552. ; 36:2, s. 313-339
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent theoretical literature in social policy argued that climate change posed a new risk to the states and called for transformation from a traditional welfare state to an ‘eco’ state. From a theoretical point of view, different welfare regimes may manage environmental/climate change risks in a similar way to social risks. However, not much has been done to explore the issue empirically. To this end, this paper aims to investigate public attitudes towards environmental and traditional welfare policies given that environmental change is a new social risk the welfare states have to address. Do individuals that care for one area also care for the other? That is, do the preferences in these two policy spheres complement or substitute one another? We test these hypotheses both at the individual- and country-level, using data from 14 countries included in all three waves (1993, 2000, and 2010) of the environmental module in the International Social Survey Programme. Specifically, we investigate the relationship between attitudes towards income redistribution (indicator of support for welfare policy) and willingness to pay for environmental protection (indicator of support for environmental policy). Our findings suggest that attitudes in the two areas are substitutes in the total sample, but that the relationship is very small and only statistically significant in some specifications. When we explore country differentials, we observe clear heterogeneity in the relationship, which can be explained by differences in political and historical contexts across countries.

  • Does marriage affect men’s labor market outcomes? : A European perspective
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Review of Economics of the Household. - New York : Springer. - 1569-5239 .- 1573-7152. ; 14:2, s. 373-389
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Does marriage make men more productive, or do more productive men marry? Previous studies have reached different conclusions but have also been conducted using different methodologies in different countries and in different time periods. We use two sources of European panel data (spanning the years 1994-2001 and 2003-2007) to assess the relationship between marriage and labor market outcomes. By using data from 12 countries over a 13 year period, we are able to investigate the impact of marriage in different country groups and across time. We find that selection into marriage accounts for most of the differences in hours worked and wages between married and non-married men. With respect to wages we note that while the difference between married and non-married males has increased over time, the actual effect of marriage has disappeared.

  • Evaluating the impact of an informational postcard campaign on telephone scams targeting the elderly
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Criminology. - : Universitetsforlaget. - 2578-983X .- 2578-9821. ; 25:1-2024, s. 1-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To combat the increasing incidence of telephone scams targeting the elderly, the Swedish Police initiated an informational campaign in 2023. This campaign involved distributing educational postcards to households with at least one resident aged 70 or older. We assess the effectiveness of the postcard intervention by comparing the change in the outcome variable (number of plaintiffs) among individuals aged 70 and above to those below 70. Despite the campaign’s aim to increase awareness and offer practical advice for avoiding scams, our analysis reveals no impact on the number of plaintiffs exposed to fraud. Our study did not identify any significant effects, adding to the existing body of literature on the effectiveness of information in influencing crime-related behaviors, where findings have been inconclusive.

  • Gender bias in public long-term care? : A survey experiment among care managers
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV. - 0167-2681 .- 1879-1751. ; 131, s. 126-138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Daughters of elderly women are more likely to provide informal care than sons. If care managers take this into account and view informal care as a substitute for formal care, they will statistically discriminate against the mothers of daughters. Using a survey experiment among professional needs assessors for long-term care services in Norway, we find that if a woman with a daughter had a son instead, she would receive 34 percent more formal care. On the other hand, daughters do not provide more care for fathers. Correspondingly, we find no effect of child gender for fathers in the experiment.
