How to develop fifth-generation district heating and cooling in Sweden? : Application review and best practices proposed by middle agents

- Sweden has an ambitious plan to fully decarbonise district heating by 2030 and to contribute with negative emissions of greenhouse gases in 2050. The vagaries of the energy market associated with climate, political, and social changes entail cross-sectoral integration that can fulfill these national targets. Fifth-generation district heating and cooling (5GDHC) is a relatively new concept of district energy systems that features a simultaneous supply of heating and cooling using power-to-heat technologies. This paper presents best practices for developing 5GDHC systems in Sweden to reach a consensus view on these systems among all stakeholders. A mixed-method combining best practice and roadmapping workshops has been used to disseminate mixed knowledge and experience from middle agents representing industry professionals and practitioners. Four successful implementations of 5GDHC systems are demonstrated and the important learned lessons are shared. The best practices are outlined for system planning, system modeling and simulation, prevailing business models for energy communities, and system monitoring. A roadmap from the middle agents’ point of view is composed and can be utilised to establish industry standards and common regulatory frameworks. © 2023 The Author(s)

- In this paper, we introduce a continuous-time competing virus model with a shared resource. We say that the system is in the healthy state if all the agents are healthy, and the shared resource is not contaminated. If the epidemic remains persistent, and the shared resource is contaminated, we say that the system is in the endemic state. First of all we show, under appropriate assumptions, that the model we introduce is well-posed. Secondly, we establish sufficient conditions for exponential (resp. asymptotic) eradication of a virus. Thirdly, for the single-virus case with a shared resource, we establish conditions that lead to existence of an endemic equilibrium. Finally, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for uniqueness of the healthy state.

- Objectives: To attain a collective expert opinion on the use of air powder waterjet technology (APWT) with erythritol and glycine powders in the prophylaxis and therapy of periodontal and peri-implant diseases.Material and methods: In the first step, a modified one-round online Delphi survey including 44 five-point Likert scale questions was conducted among a group of 10 expert clinicians and researchers with thorough knowledge and experience in this topic. In the second step, the single questions and the survey results were discussed during a meeting, and consensus statements were formulated, respectively.Results: An agreement was reached on most items, especially opinions supporting glycine and erythritol powders as favorable with respect to efficiency, safety, and comfort. More scientific evidence is needed to support the improvement in clinical attachment on teeth and implants, especially when APWT with erythritol is used. In addition, APWT needs more long-term evaluation and studies in terms of microbiome/microbiological effects as well as effects on the inflammatory response on natural teeth and implants, also in light of a guided biofilm therapy concept.Conclusions: In line with the expert opinions and supported by the evidence, it was concluded that the use of APWT with erythritol and glycine powders in nonsurgical periodontal and peri-implant therapy and prophylaxis is patient compliant and efficient.

- In this article, we develop a layered networked spread model for a susceptible-infected-susceptible pathogen-borne disease spreading over a human contact network and an infrastructure network, and refer to it as a layered networked susceptible-infected-water-susceptible model (SIWS). The "W" in SIWS represents any infrastructure network contamination, not necessarily restricted to a water distribution network. We identify sufficient conditions for the existence, uniqueness, and stability of various equilibria of the aforementioned model. Further, we study an observability problem, where, assuming that the measurements of the pathogen levels in the infrastructure network are available, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for estimation of the sickness levels of the nodes in the human contact network. Our results are illustrated through an in-depth set of simulations.

- BACKGROUND:Idiopathic fibrosing interstitial pneumonia consists of many subtypes, most associated with a poor prognosis. The aim of the study was to evaluate diagnostic procedures and treatment as well as survival in patients with idiopathic fibrosing interstitial pneumonia.METHODS:This study comprised 175 patients with idiopathic fibrosing interstitial pneumonia (ICD 10 code J84) that had been diagnosed at Uppsala University Hospital, during 2005 to 2012. Patient records were reviewed concerning: gender, age, smoking, occupational exposure, comorbidities, procedures, lung function, and treatment. Information on survival and cause of death was collected.RESULTS:A total of 98% had been examined with computed tomography, 93% with spirometry, 49% with measurement of diffusion capacity, 48% with bronchoalveolar lavage, and 23% with lung biopsy. Prednisolone had been prescribed to 74% while N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and omeprazole were prescribed to 54%, respectively. Five-year survival was 46%. Mortality was associated with high age, low diffusion capacity, and the use of NAC.CONCLUSION:High age and a low diffusion capacity are related to shorter survival in idiopathic fibrosing interstitial pneumonia. We also unexpectedly found that the use of NAC was related to shorter survival. A relatively low proportion of the patients were examined with diffusion capacity measurement. Thus, there is a possibility to improve diagnostic procedures and thereby improve estimation of prognosis in fibrotic lung disease.

- BackgroundPrior studies investigating the association between endothelial dysfunction and impaired lung function have been small and inconsistent. The primary aim was to investigate the association between endothelial function and lung function in two community-based cohorts.MethodsWe used a discovery/replication approach to study the association between endothelial function and lung function in the Prospective investigation of Obesity, Energy and Metabolism (POEM, discovery cohort, n = 490, mean age 50.3 ± 0.2 years) and the Prospective Study of the Vasculature in Uppsala Seniors (PIVUS, replication cohort, n = 892, mean age 70.2 ± 0.15 years). Spirometry and three different measures of endothelial function were performed including both the invasive forearm technique (endothelium-dependent and endothelium-independent vasodilation [EDV and EIDV, respectively] and noninvasive flow mediated dilation [FMD]).ResultsAn age and sex adjusted association between lower EDV and lower FEV1 was found in POEM and replicated in PIVUS. After merging the two cohorts, 1 standard deviation decrease in EDV was associated with 1.57% lower FEV1 after additional adjustment for smoking status, body mass index, exercise level, and C-reactive protein (95% confidence intervals 0.63–2.51, p = 0.001). The association was slightly lower albeit still statistically significant after excluding participants without cardiovascular disease and chronic respiratory disease and appeared stronger among previous/current smokers vs. non-smokers and in men vs. women (p for interaction = 0.2 and 0.02 respectively).ConclusionsOur findings suggest that even individuals with sub-clinical impairments of lung function in the community have concomitant endothelial dysfunction.
