- A critical assessment of the Fe-Sb system was carried out by using a computerized technique. Both the liquid and solid solution phases were described by regular solution models. Nonstoichiometric phase, ε-FeSb, was modeled as (Fe)(Fe,Sb), and FeSb2 was treated as a stoichiometric compound. A set of parameters describing the Gibbs energies of the different phases was optimized by using the existing phase diagram information and thermodynamic properties under one atmosphere. Assessed phase diagram and thermodynamic data are presented and compared with experimental data.

- The thermodynamic properties and phase relations in the system Cu-As were assessed. The liquid phase was described using an ionic two-sublattice model. The terminal FCC copper solution was represented by a substitutional regular solution model. The nonstoichiometric phase, γ (Cu3As), was treated by a two-sublattice model, (Cu, Va)3As, with vacancies on the Cu sublattice. The other two intermetallic compounds, β (Cu 8As) and δ (Cu12As5), were treated as stoichiometric phases. A consistent set of thermodynamic parameters was derived using activity data and phase diagram information from the literature. Various thermodynamic properties and the phase diagram were calculated from the parameters. The calculated phase equilibria and activities of arsenic and copper in the liquid phase agree very well with the literature data.

- The phase diagram and thermodynamic data of the Fe-As system were critically assessed. Activities in the liquid phase and phase diagram information were used in the assessment. The liquid phase was represented by an ionic two-sublattice model. The terminal BCC and FCC solid solutions of arsenic in iron were described by a substitutional regular solution model. The nonstoichiometric compound, Fe3As2, was treated by a two-sublattice model, Fe(As, Va)0.75, with vacancies on the As sublattice. The other intermetallic compounds, Fe2As, FeAs, and FeAs2 were all considered as stoichiometric. Based on the assessed thermodynamic model parameters, the thermodynamic properties and the phase diagram were calculated and discussed. The calculated phase equilibria and component activities of the liquid phase agree very well with literature data.

- In this study, cell nuclei from aneuploid breast cancer samples were sorted with respect to DNA content into pure diploid and aneuploid fractions using flow cytometry. The nuclear proteins were then separated by one-dimensional gel electrophoresis (1D-PAGE) and differences in protein expression patterns, between diploid and aneuploid nuclei from the same tumours, were compared. Using a combination of peptide finger printing and peptide identification by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, we identified proteins and confirmed that the proteins were of nuclear origins. The results in this study add further information to the knowledge about the breast cancer disease complexity and heterogeneity at molecular level. For some of the tumours studied different nuclei protein patterns were obtained, in the diploid respective aneuploid nuclei populations, whilst other tumours did not show these differences.

- OBJECTIVES: To examine the risk of developing adrenal carcinomas and clinically overt hypersecreting tumours during short-term follow-up in patients with adrenal incidentalomas. DESIGN: 229 (98 males and 131 females) patients with adrenal incidentalomas were investigated in a prospective follow-up study (median time 25 months; range 3-108 months). The patients were registered between January 1996 and July 2001 and followed until December 2004. Twenty-seven Swedish hospitals contributed with follow-up results. METHODS: Diagnostic procedures were undertaken according to a protocol including reinvestigation with computed tomography scans after 3-6 months, 15-18 months and 27-30 months, as well as hormonal evaluation at baseline and after 27-30 months of follow-up. Operation was recommended when the incidentaloma size increased or if there was a suspicion of a hypersecreting tumour. RESULTS: The median age at diagnosis of the 229 patients included in the follow-up study was 64 years (range 28-84 years) and the median size of the adrenal incidentalomas when discovered was 2.5 cm (range 1-8 cm). During the follow-up period, an increase in incidentaloma size of > or =0.5 cm was reported in 17 (7.4%) and of > or =1.0 cm was reported in 12 (5.2%) of the 229 patients. A decrease in size was seen in 12 patients (5.2%). A hypersecreting tumour was found in 2% of the hormonally investigated patients: Cushing's syndrome (n = 2) and phaeochromocytoma (n = 1). Eleven patients underwent adrenalectomy, but no cases of primary adrenal malignancy were observed. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with adrenal incidentaloma had a low risk of developing malignancy or hormonal hypersecretion during a short-term follow-up period.

Snus (Swedish smokeless tobacco) use and risk of stroke: pooled analyses of incidence and survival

- Background. Snus is a moist smokeless tobacco product with high nicotine content. Its use has a short-term effect on the cardiovascular system, but the relationship between snus use and stroke is unclear. Objective. The aim of this study was to assess the associations between use of snus and incidence of and survival after stroke, both overall and according to subtypes. Methods. Pooled analyses of eight Swedish prospective cohort studies were conducted, including 130 485 men who never smoked. We estimated hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of incidence and death after diagnosis using Cox proportional hazard regression models and case fatality and survival using logistic regression and Kaplan-Meier methods, respectively. Results. No associations were observed between the use of snus and the risk of overall stroke (HR 1.04, 95% CI 0.92-1.17) or of any of the stroke subtypes. The odds ratio (OR) of 28-day case fatality was 1.42 (95% CI 0.99-2.04) amongst users of snus who had experienced a stroke, and the HR of death during the follow-up period was 1.32 (95% CI 1.08-1.61). Conclusion. Use of snus was not associated with the risk of stroke. Hence, nicotine is unlikely to contribute importantly to the pathophysiology of stroke. However, case fatality was increased in snus users, compared with nonusers, but further studies are needed to determine any possible causal mechanisms.

Diminishing benefits of urban living for children and adolescents' growth and development

- Optimal growth and development in childhood and adolescence is crucial for lifelong health and well-being1–6. Here we used data from 2,325 population-based studies, with measurements of height and weight from 71 million participants, to report the height and body-mass index (BMI) of children and adolescents aged 5–19 years on the basis of rural and urban place of residence in 200 countries and territories from 1990 to 2020. In 1990, children and adolescents residing in cities were taller than their rural counterparts in all but a few high-income countries. By 2020, the urban height advantage became smaller in most countries, and in many high-income western countries it reversed into a small urban-based disadvantage. The exception was for boys in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa and in some countries in Oceania, south Asia and the region of central Asia, Middle East and north Africa. In these countries, successive cohorts of boys from rural places either did not gain height or possibly became shorter, and hence fell further behind their urban peers. The difference between the age-standardized mean BMI of children in urban and rural areas was <1.1 kg m–2 in the vast majority of countries. Within this small range, BMI increased slightly more in cities than in rural areas, except in south Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and some countries in central and eastern Europe. Our results show that in much of the world, the growth and developmental advantages of living in cities have diminished in the twenty-first century, whereas in much of sub-Saharan Africa they have amplified.
