  • Ten cities cross-sectional questionnaire survey of children asthma and other allergies in China
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Chinese Science Bulletin. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1001-6538 .- 1861-9541. ; 58:34, s. 4182-4189
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Asthma, rhinitis and eczema (allergic or non-allergic) have increased throughout the world during the last decades, especially among children. Changes in the indoor environment are suspected to be important causes. China has experienced a dramatic change in indoor environmental exposures during the past two decades. However, such changes and their associations with children's asthma and other health aspects have not been thoroughly studied. China, Children, Homes, Health (CCHH), Phase I, was a cross-sectional questionnaire survey of 48219 children 1-8 years old in 10 Chinese cities during 2010-2012. The questionnaire includes the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) core health questions and additional questions regarding housing, life habits and outdoor environment. In health analyses, children aged 3-6 years old were included. The prevalences of doctor diagnosed asthma varied from 1.7% to 9.8% (mean 6.8%), a large increase from 0.91% in 1999 and 1.50% in 2000. The prevalence of wheeze, rhinitis and atopic eczema (last 12 months) varied from 13.9% to 23.7%, 24.0% to 50.8% and 4.8% to 15.8%, respectively. Taiyuan had the lowest prevalences of all illnesses and Shanghai the highest, except for wheezewhere the highest value was for Urumqi. We found (1) no obvious association between disease prevalences and ambient PM10 concentrations and (2) higher prevalences of disease in humid climates with hot summers and cold winters, but with no centrally heated buildings. Associations between the diseases and economic status as indexed by Gross Domestic Product (GDP) requires further study.

  • Rapid manoeuvre of fan worms (Annelida: Sabellidae) through tubes
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Experimental Biology. - 0022-0949. ; 226:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multiple variables determine the success of an escape response of an animal, and the rapidity of the escape manoeuvre is often the most important. Fan worms (Annelida: Sabellidae) can rapidly withdraw their tentacles, which are covered in heavily ciliated ramifications called pinnules, into their tubes to protect them from approaching threats. Here, we explore the dynamic and mechanistic features behind this escape manoeuvre. The escape responses of fan worms were recorded by high-speed videography and quantified by computerized motion analysis, showing an ultrahigh retraction speed of 272 ±135 mm s−1 (8±4 body lengths s−1). We found that fan worms possess powerful muscle-driven systems, which can generate contractive forces up to 36 times their body weight. In order to achieve these rapid, forceful movements through seawater without damaging their tentacles, fan worms have developed functional morphological adaptations to reduce fluidic drag, including the flattening of their radiolar pinnules and the deformation of bodily segmental ridges. Our hydrodynamic models indicate that these mechanical processes can decrease fluidic drag by 47%, trapped mass by 75% and friction coefficient by 89%. These strategies allow fan worms to execute rapid escape responses and could inspire the design of fast in-pipe robots.

  • VEGF-B prevents excessive angiogenesis by inhibiting FGF2/FGFR1 pathway
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: SIGNAL TRANSDUCTION AND TARGETED THERAPY. - : SPRINGERNATURE. - 2095-9907 .- 2059-3635. ; 8:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although VEGF-B was discovered as a VEGF-A homolog a long time ago, the angiogenic effect of VEGF-B remains poorly understood with limited and diverse findings from different groups. Notwithstanding, drugs that inhibit VEGF-B together with other VEGF family members are being used to treat patients with various neovascular diseases. It is therefore critical to have a better understanding of the angiogenic effect of VEGF-B and the underlying mechanisms. Using comprehensive in vitro and in vivo methods and models, we reveal here for the first time an unexpected and surprising function of VEGF-B as an endogenous inhibitor of angiogenesis by inhibiting the FGF2/FGFR1 pathway when the latter is abundantly expressed. Mechanistically, we unveil that VEGF-B binds to FGFR1, induces FGFR1/VEGFR1 complex formation, and suppresses FGF2-induced Erk activation, and inhibits FGF2-driven angiogenesis and tumor growth. Our work uncovers a previously unrecognized novel function of VEGF-B in tethering the FGF2/FGFR1 pathway. Given the anti-angiogenic nature of VEGF-B under conditions of high FGF2/FGFR1 levels, caution is warranted when modulating VEGF-B activity to treat neovascular diseases.

  • Probing strain in wurtzite InP-InAs core-shell nanowires with Raman spectroscopy
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - 2469-9950. ; 104:23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We used Raman spectroscopy to investigate phonon modes of single InP-InAs core-shell nanowire with a pure wurtzite phase to reveal the embedded strained state. Raman spectra show that the InP core exhibits tensile strain and the InAs shell exhibits compressive strain due to the radial heterostructure growth. Using different polarization excitation configurations, we identified distinct A1 (TO) and E1 (TO) modes, atomic vibrations along and perpendicular to the [0001] direction, respectively. We also identified E2h phonon modes in wurtzite InP and InAs, lattice vibration along with the [0001] direction, a fingerprint to distinguish a wurtzite phase from a zinc-blende phase. The Raman spectra changes reveal the resonance effects of InP and InAs between the E0+Δ0 energy level and the E1 gap by varying excitation energy, which indicates Γ7c-Γ6v transition consists of a split-off valence band and a band-gap transition along [0001] directions of the Brillouin zone. The polar patterns show the Raman A1 (TO) mode of InP only predominates in the x(yy)x¯ configuration, indicating the InP A1 (TO) phonon is sensitive to excitation polarization, suggesting the resonant Raman spectroscopy with specific polarization offers a direct way for characterizing wurtzite InP. Our findings deepen the understanding of strain in wurtzite-phase core-shell nanowire, providing a significant reference for engineering strain in core-shell nanowire to control optical and electric properties.
