  • Modality in Kazakh as spoken in China
  • 2014
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This is a comprehensive study on expressions of modality in one of the largest Turkic languages, Kazakh, as it is spoken in China. Kazakh is the official language of the Republic of Kazakhstan and is furthermore spoken by about one and a half million people in China in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and in Aksai Kazakh Autonomous County in Gansu Province. The method employed is empirical, i.e. data-oriented. The modal expressions in Kazakh are analyzed in a theoretical framework essentially based on the works of Lars Johanson. The framework defines semantic notions of modality from a functional and typological perspective. The modal volition, deontic evaluation, and epistemic evaluation express attitudes towards the propositional content and are conveyed in Kazakh by grammaticalized moods, particles and lexical devices. All these categories are treated in detail, and ample examples of their different usages are provided with interlinear annotation. The Kazakh expressions are compared with corresponding ones used in other Turkic languages. Contact influences of Uyghur and Chinese are also dealt with. The data used in this study include texts recorded by the author in 20102012, mostly in the northern regions of Xinjiang, as well as written texts published in Kazakhstan and China. The written texts represent different genres: fiction, non-fiction, poetry and texts published on the Internet. Moreover, examples have been elicited from native speakers of Kazakh and Uyghur. The Appendix contains nine texts recorded by the author in the Kazakh-speaking regions of Xinjiang, China. These texts illustrate the use of many of the items treated in the study.

  • Dressed for success : designing and managing regional strategic networks
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Inter-organizational network initiatives such as regional strategic networks (RSNs) are often used by firms and public agencies to support regional development and competitiveness. RSNs are designed networks managed by a hub and financed by public or private means. RSN management is complex as members are autonomous and initially often loosely connected. The effects of RSNs on regional development are disputed as engineered relationship development may interfere with ongoing business relationships.  Despite this, vast public funds are being invested in collaborative initiatives. Identifying factors affecting RSN performance will provide a better basis for evaluating and managing such initiatives.Based on concepts such as actors, resources, and activities findings are reported from longitudinal case-studies built on interviews with 68 members and hubs in four RSNs. Data were also collected through participant observation, conversations, archival data and emails. Findings indicate that factors such as evaluation criteria, member composition, relationships, location, goals, the hub, physical and human resources, knowledge sharing and development, resources, policies and norms, social activities, and communication exert an impact on entrepreneurship and cooperation. The first paper focuses on factors such as actor composition, actor goals, number of actors, and activities facilitating relationship development and commitment. The second paper identifies a framework of seven tasks to be performed by the hub. The effects on development of preferences and atmosphere are dealt with in the third paper. Effects of cooperation between public/private sector and universities are addressed in the fourth paper, and entrepreneurial processes in network contexts are analyzed in the fifth one.The important management role of the hub is emphasized as is carefully considered member composition. Relationships and commitment are found to be crucial. These factors are not covered by national and regional performance criteria. They merit a place of their own.

  • Comparison of survival between malignant neuroendocrine tumours of midgut and pancreatic origin.
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: British journal of cancer. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0007-0920 .- 1532-1827. ; 80:8, s. 1259-61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The survival of 64 consecutive patients with disseminated midgut carcinoid tumours was compared in a retrospective study with that of 25 consecutive patients with sporadic malignant endocrine pancreatic tumours treated according to similar surgical principles. The presence of hepatic metastases implied a worse prognosis in neuroendocrine tumours of pancreatic rather than midgut origin. This infers that these tumour types must be separated when treatments are evaluated.

  • A Halich Karaim Bible Translation
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation is a corpus-based analysis of a translation of the Hebrew Bible into Halich Karaim, a Kipchak Turkic variety previously spoken in the present-day Ukraine. The corpus analysed in the thesis comprises sixty selected pages of a 596 page manuscript written in the Hebrew alphabet. A detailed transliteration system renders the information encoded in the Hebrew script. Furthermore, on the basis of the transliteration, a Simplified Interpretative Transliteration (SIT) system is applied to make the Karaim text more easily readable. Motivations for employing different graphic forms in the Hebrew script are interpreted in SIT.The main focus of the dissertation is the analysis of the linguistic characteristics copied from Biblical Hebrew onto Halich Karaim. The theoretical framework applied is the Code-Copying Model (Johanson 2002).The introductory section gives a brief presentation of the Halich Karaims and previous studies on their language and Bible translations. This is followed by a detailed account of the transliteration system and the Simplified Interpretative Transliteration. One of the aims of the dissertation is to characterize the type of Bible translation that the studied Halich Karaim texts represent. To this end, a typological framework proposed by Floor (2007) is employed. The main part of the dissertation provides a systematic description of Biblical Hebrew properties copied onto the language of the Halich Karaim Bible. First, copied features of nominals and verbs are treated, followed by a description of copied syntactic and lexical characteristics. The in-depth analysis of the language of the translation leads to the conclusion that it represents a 'close resemblant translation type' in Floor’s typology. This is further supported by a comparison with other Karaim (Trakai and Crimean) and Turkish Bible translations. The Appendix contains the first Halich Karaim Bible texts published in transliteration.

  • Somatostatin Receptors in the Diagnosis and Therapy of Neuroendocrine Tumor.
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: The oncologist. - 1549-490X. ; 2:1, s. 50-58
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The expression of somatostatin receptors in neuroendocrine tumors has facilitated the diagnosis and surgical treatment of patients with these tumors. After injection of a radiolabeled long-acting somatostatin analog, (111)In-octreotide, scintigraphic tumor imaging can ben performed as well as intraoperative tumor localization. During localization studies very high (111)In concentration values were found in tumor tissues versus normal tissues, especially in carcinoid tumors and endocrine pancreatic tumors. Studies on such tumors in cell culture further indicated internalization of (111)In into tumor cells, which is a prerequisite for a radiobiological effect from short range Auger and conversion electrons. Attempts to systemic radionuclide therapy via somatostatin receptors in patients with neuroendocrine tumors have been initiated.

  • Ambiguous verb sequences in Transeurasian languages and beyond
  • 2019
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Éva Á. Csató, Lars Johanson and Birsel Karakoç eds. 2019. Ambiguous Verb Sequences in Transeurasian Languages and Beyond (Turcologica 120). Wiesbaden: Harrassowitz. i-vii, 1–342.Some sequences of verbs can display systematic ambiguities in meaning. Accent patterns are among the means for disambiguating them. The volume presents a comprehensive analysis of ambiguous verb sequences and ways of teasing them apart, an issue that has never before been addressed in the typological literature. It consists of seventeen contributions focusing on data from the Transeurasian languages Turkic, Japanese and Korean, and a Tungusic variety. The studies demonstrate strong typological similarities between these languages. The term “verb sequence” is used to refer to any contiguous sequence of two or more verbs. A structural ambiguity arises when two or more different readings can be assigned to the same sequence. For instance, a sequence of two verbs may be understood as two predicates describing consecutive events, or as a single predicate consisting of a lexical verb followed by an auxiliary verb. This latter type can display further ambiguity between actionality and viewpoint-aspect readings. The introductory chapter succinctly presents Lars Johanson’s theoretical framework and terminology, which are applied by the authors. Alexandra Y. Aikhenvald reviews verb sequences from a broad typological perspective. Martine Robbeets studies the coincidence of intraterminal and postterminal readings in certain converb constructions across the Transeurasian languages. Ten papers deal with Turkic varieties such as Turkish dialects, a Volga-Turkic variety of the 17th century, Kazakh, Yakut, Dolgan, Siberian Turkic, Noghay, Salar, and Uyghur. Complex predicates are analyzed in an endangered Tungusic variety, Uilta (Orok). One chapter deals with Korean, and another with Fukuoka Japanese. The final contribution, on Ladakhi (a Tibetic language), demonstrates the broader areal distribution of ambiguous verb sequences. The volume is based on presentations given at the 19th International Conference on Turkish Linguistics (ICTL), held August 17–19, 2018, at Nazarbayev University, Astana, Kazakhstan, which was the first conference of this kind in Central Asia.
