  • Sharing the unshareable : distributed product review using tangibles
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Proceedings. - Berlin : VDE-Verlag. - 3800728834 ; , s. 161-175
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Due to the ongoing globalization of businesses and the collaboration occurring between geographically dispersed organizations, distributed collaborative work using computer based support tools becomes increasingly important. When trying to perform design work while relying heavily on the use of physical artefacts such as early mock-ups, a need to share the unshareable, i.e. physical objects, will inevitably occur in a distributed setting. In an attempt to realize this, the authors studied a design team during their design reviews where a physical mock-up was used. A wearable conferencing unit (the Boblebee computer) was then developed to give remote collaborators a first person view of the mock-up using a head mounted video camera. With the Boblebee computer, remote collaboration with large tangible objects can successfully be realized. This paper relates experiences from the design of the system, and reports on early observations of its use.

  • Latency impact on Quality of Experience in a virtual reality simulator for remote control of machines
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Signal processing. Image communication. - : Elsevier. - 0923-5965 .- 1879-2677. ; 89
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we have investigated a VR simulator of a forestry crane used for loading logs onto a truck. We have mainly studied the Quality of Experience (QoE) aspects that may be relevant for task completion, and whether there are any discomfort related symptoms experienced during the task execution. QoE experiments were designed to capture the general subjective experience of using the simulator, and to study task performance. The focus was to study the effects of latency on the subjective experience, with regards to delays in the crane control interface. Subjective studies were performed with controlled delays added to the display update and hand controller (joystick) signals. The added delays ranged from 0 to 30 ms for the display update, and from 0 to 800 ms for the hand controller. We found a strong effect on latency in the display update and a significant negative effect for 800 ms added delay on latency in the hand controller (in total approx. 880 ms latency including the system delay). The Simulator Sickness Questionnaire (SSQ) gave significantly higher scores after the experiment compared to before the experiment, but a majority of the participants reported experiencing only minor symptoms. Some test subjects ceased the test before finishing due to their symptoms, particularly due to the added latency in the display update.

  • Quality of Experience for a Virtual Reality simulator
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Human Vision and Electronic Imaging 2018. - : The Society for Imaging Science and Technology.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, we investigate a VR simulator of a forestry crane used for loading logs onto a truck, mainly looking at Quality of Experience (QoE) aspects that may be relevant for task completion, but also whether there are any discomfort related symptoms experienced during task execution. The QoE test has been designed to capture both the general subjective experience of using the simulator and to study task completion rate. Moreover, a specific focus has been to study the effects of latency on the subjective experience, with regards both to delays in the crane control interface as well as lag in the visual scene rendering in the head mounted display (HMD). Two larger formal subjective studies have been performed: one with the VR-system as it is and one where we have added controlled delay to the display update and to the joystick signals. The baseline study shows that most people are more or less happy with the VR-system and that it does not have strong effects on any symptoms as listed in the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire (SSQ). In the delay study we found significant effects on Comfort Quality and Immersion Quality for higher Display delay (30 ms), but very small impact of joystick delay. Furthermore, the Display delay had strong influence on the symptoms in the SSQ, and causing test subjects to decide not to continue with the complete experiments. We found that this was especially connected to the longer added Display delays (≥ 20 ms).

  • An ad-hoc bluetooth sensor network for automotive testing
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: 2008 Consumer Communications and Networking Conference. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Communications Society. - 9781424414567 - 9781424414574 ; , s. 179-180
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, the feasibility of using a sensor network for automotive testing is investigated. Testing is becoming ever more important for the car industry, where the demands for quicker time-to-market and shortened development cycles are increasing. Car testing is time consuming, and is often performed in remote rural areas. Traditional methods include wiring up a vehicle with sensors connected to a data logging device. We envision that the use of wireless sensors can drastically decrease the time required to perform a set of test cases. A sensor network based on Bluetooth was used to validate our design approach. The network supports real-time monitoring of sensor data, and precludes the need of manually configuring each sensor node. Preliminary tests indicates that the proposed design is well suited for vehicle testing, due to its inherent support for ad-hoc networking and auto configuration of services.

  • State-of-the-art methods to improve energy efficiency of ships
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Marine Science and Engineering. - : MDPI AG. - 2077-1312. ; 9:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Generating energy efficiency through behavioural change requires not only understanding and empathy with user interests and needs but also the fostering of energy saving awareness, a technique and framework that supports operators and ship owners. There is strong potential to make use of different technical solutions to increase energy efficiency, but many cost-efficient solutions relate to carrot-and-stick incentives for operators to minimise energy consumption. These incentives range from voyage planning with weather routing eco-driving bonus, to torque limitations and changes in company policies, all of which demonstrate that the operators’ on-board importance for the energy consumption has been identified. Data collection will allow operators to make better decisions in the lifecycle of the ship from knowledge-driven design to operation, redesign and lifetime extension. Various systems are available for data acquisition, storage and analysis, some of which are delivered by well-known marine suppliers while others are stand-alone systems. The lack of standardization for data capture, transmission and analysis is a challenge, so systematic improvement is required in shipping companies to achieve energy savings. When these are achieved, they will be the result of customer requirements, cost pressure or individual driving forces in the companies. The potential energy savings, brought up in interviews, shows up to 35% on specific routes and up to 60% in specific maneuvers. These savings will be made feasible by operators and crews being involved in the decision-making process. © 2021 by the authors.

  • A framework for distributed collaborative automotive testing
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Challenges in collaborative engineering. - Gliwice : Interprint. - 919756043X
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we explore the opportunities of improving the testing and verification phases of product development in the automotive industry, through a combination of broadband telematic services and tools and methods for distributed collaborative engineering. The development of a prototype system for remote vehicle testing is described, and experiences from experimental usage of the system at an automotive winter testing facility are reported. The prototype system supports real time communication of audio, video and measurement data from a vehicle at a test track, to a remote location such as an automotive company's development site. Initial results from using the system are promising, indicating a clear potential of improving the testing and verification phases of product development within the automotive sector, which will be essential in the future in order to meet demands on shortened development cycles and increased testing needs.

  • Audiovisual network service optimization by quality of experience estimation
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of NEM – Networked and Electronic Media Summit. - 9783000397103 ; , s. 59-64
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the growing popularity of audio and video communication services on the Internet, network operators, service providers and application developers are becoming increasingly interested in assuring that their services give the best possible experience to the users. Since real-time audio and video services are very sensitive to packet loss, latency and bandwidth variations, the performance of the network must be monitored in real time so that the service can be adapted to varying network conditions by mechanisms such as rate control, forward error correction and jitter buffer adaptation. However, in order to optimize a service in terms of the user’s experience, the subjective effect that various network perturbations have on the user should be taken into consideration in the service adaptation mechanism. In this paper we present a novel approach to performance optimization based on rate adaptation driven by real-time estimation of the subjective Quality of Experience of a videoconferencing service. A proof-of-concept service optimization framework consisting of network monitoring, quality estimation, rate adaptation and service optimization mechanisms is presented and a testbed configuration based on network emulation is described and used for evaluation. Our initial experiments show that theapproach is viable in practice and can substantially improve the Quality of Experience of real-time audiovisual services.

  • Collaborative innovation through distributed engineering services
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of International Multi-Conference on Engineering and Technological Innovation.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rapid advancement in information and communication technology in recent decades has presented new opportunities for carrying out sophisticated engineering work in distributed teams, using tools and techniques collectively referred to as Distributed Collaborative Engineering (DCE). This kind of on-line collaboration not only cuts costs due to reduced travel, but also fosters innovation in product development, by bringing together groups of people in collaborative teams with complementary competences, that would otherwise be difficult to realize. Moreover, the convergence of technologies for telecommunication and information technology now makes it possible for companies specialized in collaboration technology to deliver sophisticated services for DCE, which can be purchased by engineering companies on a pay-per-use basis. By outsourcing the installation, management and support of the collaboration tools, the engineering companies can focus on their product development projects while harnessing the full potential of DCE to become more efficient and competitive. We believe that this new way of conducting engineering work will be an important key to innovation in the future. In this paper, we analyze the requirements for delivering DCE as a service and describe the implications this has in terms of systems design, business models and competence requirements. Furthermore, in addition to the primary return on investment in DCE services, we cite cost reductions and reduced CO2 emissions as further benefits.

  • Improving vehicle diagnostics through wireless data collection and statistical analysis
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: 66th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Communications Society. - 9781424402632 ; , s. 2184-2188
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Collection and analysis of diagnostic data from electronic control units is of paramount importance in the automotive industry, both from a life cycle support perspective, and as a tool in the product development. For pre-series test vehicles, access to diagnostic data is crucial in order to be able to track problems as early as possible in the development process, preventing serious faults to pass undetected into production vehicles. However, systematic collection of diagnostic data from test vehicles is complicated by the fact that pre-series vehicles are frequently unavailable for diagnostic read-outs, while away on test expeditions in rural areas, or being operated by taxi companies, or being otherwise inaccessible. In response, we propose a system for wireless read-out of diagnostic data, based on an embedded system installed in the test vehicles and a server component at the automotive company. Moreover, we present a number of computer-based tools for statistical analysis of diagnostic trouble codes, to aid engineers in processing the potentially very large amount of diagnostic dataata generated by the automated collection system. We strongly believe that wireless diagnostic collection systems, in combination with statistical analysis tools, will be a key component in meeting future demands on reduced development time, while the complexity of automotive electronics continue to grow. Initial results from our pilot trials with the tools described in this paper support this claim.

  • Mobility support for distributed collaborative teamwork
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Electronic journal of information technology in construction. - 1403-6835 .- 1400-6529. ; 9, s. 355-366
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Following the trend in computer and network architecture towards smaller and lighter devices that are more or less constantly connected to the Internet through wireless access networks, mobile computing has emerged as a promising means to improve the possibilities of distributed collaborative teamwork. However, the mobility support implemented in state of the art collaboration software has hitherto been rather limited. In this paper we investigate the emerging technologies for wireless network access and mobile computing, how mobility support can be built into the software tools used today for distributed collaborative teamwork, and the benefits it gives users. The main focus is on synchronous, real-time communication tools like multimodal teleconferencing, and the perspective is both technical and methodological. Until now text has been the primary medium for mobile collaboration and our key finding is that user mobility support for video can substantially enhance the possibilities for informal, spontaneous communication between team members. Furthermore, we argue that mobility support for the applications in question is more appropriately implemented at the application level rather than at the network level.
