  • A Halich Karaim Bible Translation
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation is a corpus-based analysis of a translation of the Hebrew Bible into Halich Karaim, a Kipchak Turkic variety previously spoken in the present-day Ukraine. The corpus analysed in the thesis comprises sixty selected pages of a 596 page manuscript written in the Hebrew alphabet. A detailed transliteration system renders the information encoded in the Hebrew script. Furthermore, on the basis of the transliteration, a Simplified Interpretative Transliteration (SIT) system is applied to make the Karaim text more easily readable. Motivations for employing different graphic forms in the Hebrew script are interpreted in SIT.The main focus of the dissertation is the analysis of the linguistic characteristics copied from Biblical Hebrew onto Halich Karaim. The theoretical framework applied is the Code-Copying Model (Johanson 2002).The introductory section gives a brief presentation of the Halich Karaims and previous studies on their language and Bible translations. This is followed by a detailed account of the transliteration system and the Simplified Interpretative Transliteration. One of the aims of the dissertation is to characterize the type of Bible translation that the studied Halich Karaim texts represent. To this end, a typological framework proposed by Floor (2007) is employed. The main part of the dissertation provides a systematic description of Biblical Hebrew properties copied onto the language of the Halich Karaim Bible. First, copied features of nominals and verbs are treated, followed by a description of copied syntactic and lexical characteristics. The in-depth analysis of the language of the translation leads to the conclusion that it represents a 'close resemblant translation type' in Floor’s typology. This is further supported by a comparison with other Karaim (Trakai and Crimean) and Turkish Bible translations. The Appendix contains the first Halich Karaim Bible texts published in transliteration.

  • The problem of ozone depletion in northern Europe
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Ambio: a Journal of Human Environment. - 0044-7447. ; 27:4, s. 275-279
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ozone in the atmosphere, mainly in the stratosphere, absorbs most of the ultraviolet-B (wavelength 280-315 nm) radiation from the sun, which can destroy DNA and other biologically important molecules and, thereby, damage living organisms. Due to the pollution of the atmosphere by humans, the ozone layer is presently being depleted, more rapidly at higher latitudes than at lower, and more rapidly over Scandinavia than over most geographical regions at corresponding latitudes. Ultraviolet-B radiation is generally more intense in mountain regions than at sea level. We have experiments in progress in which we simulate the effects of further ozone depletion on terrestrial ecosystems (mountain heaths, bogs, tundra) by irradiating them with artificial ultraviolet-B radiation. Effects on the growth of dwarf-shrubs and mosses and on plant litter decomposition are described.

  • Tro, hopp och IT : Stora och små berättelser från ett förändringsprojekt
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Information technology (IT) is often assumed to be a prerequisite for the modern and developed organization, even though IT projects are described as problematic in practice. Starting with this paradox and using a narrative method, this study focuses on how, through their stories, employees of an organization ascribe different meanings to IT.The study, which entailed following an IT project at an insurance company, illustrates how the employees of the organization actively ascribe various and contradictory meanings to IT. On the one hand, preference is given to one grand narrative of IT as a tool in the service of the organization. This grand narrative ascribes the meaning of achieving management, control, and change, which is supposed to help the organization on its way toward a more successful future. Great responsibility is transferred to the technology for attaining the desired impact in the organization, which can backfire, especially against project management as they are hit with demands to fulfill the expectations for IT. On the other hand, employees wrestle to control the project, which they describe as unwieldy and unmanageable. The desired management, control, and change are described as elusive. The IT project has in this way come to be developed in a field of tension between contradictory meanings, where problems and solutions are constructed over time. The employees thus become, to an extent, victims of the meanings they have reproduced, something that can be described as double-edged power. The employees who were the keenest advocates of IT are also those who have the greatest difficulty accepting the failure of the technology to live up to expectations. In parallel, the study illustrates the employees’ opportunities to actively engage themselves in storytelling that complement and challenge the dominating meanings in the organization.

  • Radioembolization Versus Bland Embolization for Hepatic Metastases from Small Intestinal Neuroendocrine Tumors: Short-Term Results of a Randomized Clinical Trial.
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: World Journal of Surgery. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0364-2313 .- 1432-2323. ; 42:2, s. 506-513
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Radioembolization (RE) with intra-arterial administration of 90Y microspheres is a promising technique for the treatment of liver metastases from small intestinal neuroendocrine tumors (SI-NET) not amenable to surgery or local ablation. However, studies comparing RE to other loco-regional therapies are lacking. The aim of this randomized study was to compare the therapeutic response and safety after RE and bland hepatic arterial embolization (HAE), and to investigate early therapy-induced changes with diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI-MRI).Eleven patients were included in a prospective randomized controlled pilot study, six assigned to RE and five to HAE. Response according to RECIST 1.1 using MRI or CT at 3 and 6months post-treatment was recorded as well as changes in DWI-MRI parameters after 1month. Data on biochemical tumor response, toxicity, and side effects were also collected.Three months after treatment, all patients in the HAE group showed partial response according to RECIST while none in the RE group did (p=0.0022). After 6months, the response rates were 4/5 (80%) and 2/6 (33%) in the HAE and RE groups, respectively (NS). DWI-MRI metrics could not predict RECIST response, but lower pretreatment ADC(120-800) and larger ADC(0-800) increase at 1month were related to larger decrease in tumor diameter when all tumors were counted.HAE resulted in significantly higher RECIST response after 3months, but no difference compared to RE remained after 6months. These preliminary findings indicate that HAE remains a safe option for the treatment of liver metastases from SI-NET, and further studies are needed to establish the role of RE and the predictive value of MR-DWI.
